Ammo box, 5.56mm surplus is a type of ammunition in Fallout: New Vegas.
Characteristics[]
- Buying this box is buying 5.56mm surplus bullets in bulk. Once finished with the transaction, the box will be disposed of and 250 rounds are received in return.
- Surplus ammunition is poor grade ammunition made in large quantities by using corrosive materials in their construction. The resulting product is a slightly more damaging round (+15%) at the cost of more regular maintenance on a firearm (3 times faster degradation) due to the damaging corrosive materials used in the round's construction. This ammunition is usually much cheaper than regular ammunition and comes in bulk packaging.

- If following the trench system when first entering The Fort, all the way to the right of the map, the Courier will find two boxes of surplus ammunition.
- They are sometimes sold by Chet in the Goodsprings General Store.
- They are sold by Blake at Crimson Caravan Company.
- They are sold by Quartermaster Bardon at Hoover Dam in large quantities.
- They are sometimes also sold by Johnson Nash in Primm.
- They are sold by Cliff Briscoe at Novac.
- They are sold by the Boomer munitions manager at Nellis Air Force Base.
- They are sometimes sold at the Gun Runners.

Surplus ammo is useful as companion ammo since a companion's weapon will never degrade.
