.223 pistols are ballistic revolvers that can be found, bought and obtained in Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas and were to make an appearance in Van Buren.

Models[]

Irwin's .223 pistol[]

The first .223 pistol was modified from a full sized .223 revolving rifle, belonging to Irwin, a farmer outside of the Hub. He cut his rifle down to the size of a large pistol.[1] This unique weapon offered firepower comparable to a hunting rifle in the compact package of a pistol. Five rounds of .223 ammunition were more than enough to deal with most dangers out in the wastes.[2]

Mass produced 5.56mm pistol[]

This iconic sidearm caught the eye of gunsmiths in the following years, and the pistol saw mass production but was modified to fully accommodate the more powerful 5.56mm.[3][Non-game 1] Vestigial elements, such as the double triggers, were shed to improve performance. The internal mechanisms are retained from the original .223 revolving rifle, modified as needed to create a powerful double-action revolver.[4]

One of the pistol's advanced systems is its cylinder. Protected by an external gate with LEDs signaling the weapon's status (red safe, yellow reloading, green ready to fire), it is mounted on a mechanized crane. When all five shots are fired (or the operator triggers the reload sequence), the firearm automatically opens the gate and the cylinder extends on the crane outside while auto-ejecting the spent cases, allowing for fast, easy reloading with a speed loader.[4]

For the unique version that appears in Fallout: New Vegas, see: That Gun.

Behind the scenes[]

  • A version of the weapon would have also appeared in Van Buren, as the .223 autoloader.
  • The .223 pistol was modeled by Gary Platner after Deckard's blaster from the 1982 film Blade Runner.[Non-game 2]
  • That Gun is named as such because players would often refer to the original .223 pistols (as well as the Blade Runner gun) as That Gun.[Non-game 1]
  • The .223 pistol was planned to be included in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky as an Easter egg, along with the Bozar and generic .223 ammunition, but only remains partially implemented in the game's resources.[Non-game 3]

IrishHooman: "Why was it called 'That Gun' anyway? always wondered"
Joshua Sawyer: "because it's That Gun From Fallout/Fallout 2/Blade Runner. also we didn't have .223 as a primary ammo type."

Chris Taylor: "That's a great gun. Gary Platner modeled it and nailed the design exactly right. I didn't do the Turbocharged Plasma Rifle, which I think was ultimately not-balanced. But it is fun."
