Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, talk pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at Talk:Joseph E. Johnston, is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. BusterD (talk) 14:23, 24 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Confederate Army

[edit]

I object. Recently an anonymous editor reverted your "strengths and weaknesses" section in toto at Confederate Army. I liked it. Sounded right out of John Keegan's "The American Civil War: a military history". Deletion was excused by its not having a citation -- and poorly written ???? Okay, I would have left out "interestingly". --- really? poorly written?? -- do you have a chum following your contributions at WP and pulling your chain? And--do you have a source readily at hand to restore the passage? With interest, I am TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 06:37, 6 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chappaquiddick Incident

[edit]

Dear Valetude -

I've posted some material specifically in response to your inquiries regarding the events at Chappaquiddick in 1969. You can view them at Talk:Chappaquiddick incident.

I was looking at your Userpage and we appear to have a number of interests in common: US History and English Literature. Visit my site User:36hourblock to see what I've been working on lately.

Confederate Army

[edit]

Sometimes administrators are listed in the Talk page heading. There is an automatic interest group in the listed Wikiprojects or in this case "Task Force" at the for a third party take on the issue ... toggle [show] on the Additional Information line in the header box at Talk:Confederate States Army. They should be listed in a Request for Comment (RFC).

When I recently went to the WP:Teahouse for a strategy to avoid controversy, the advice was first use a Request for Comment on the Talk page, see the WP:RFC page, where it shows you how to add a notice at multiple Wikiproject pages.

That assumes good faith, first try to talk it out by calling attention to the issue, --- way before anybody gets warned/blocked for edit warring WP:edit warring (three reversions within 24 hours, or without discussion on the Talk page) or the back-and-forth becomes eligible for the 'dispute resolution' WP:dispute resolution when it becomes prolonged. Orwell

[edit]

Thank you for your kind words. I blush.

In "Answers" you report that you attended English boarding school. I wonder if you've read much of George Orwell's works? I was thinking specifically of his autobiographical essay of his schools days at St. Cyprians, "Such, Such Were the Joys". But perhaps you've written your own memoirs on the topic, or is that considered passé? 36hourblock (talk) 20:46, 7 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Never was a great Orwell fan. When he was deliberately freezing and starving in the North of England, most people were laughing behind his back. I was raised on Wodehouse, H.G. Wells and Conan Doyle, especially his science fiction (the Professor Challenger stories.) Plus various French and Spanish authors. 86.156.61.41 (talk) 14:02, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(Sorry, you'll guess that was from me!) Valetude (talk) 16:30, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I, too, immersed myself in the works of H. G. Wells as a boy, especially a collection called "28 stories". I committed to memory the first lines of "The Time Machine": "THE TIME TRAVELLER (for so it will be convenient to speak of him) was expounding a recondite matter to us. His grey eyes shone and twinkled, and his usually pale face was flushed and animated...." Orwell joins us in praise for Wells. He recalls, "I had read and re-read the entire published works of Shaw, Wells, and Galsworthy (at that time still regarded as dangerously ‘advanced’ writers..."

As for Doyle, I recently reread some of his Sherlock Holmes adventures. They still delight!

On the public's perception of Orwell, that "most people were laughing behind his back" when he was collecting material as a journalist among the homeless and unemployed...well, I hope you won't include that in the wiki article without a couple citations.

As for Wodehouse, his rather naive cooperation with Nazi propogandists while interned was entirely innocent, and the charges of collaboration were grossly unjust. His actions, however, might reasonalby be described as "laughable". As Oscar Wilde points out, "There is no sin except stupidity". 36hourblock (talk) 22:43, 14 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Vicksburg July 4

This is from the Old Courthouse Museum in Vicksburg, last week.

According to Samuel Mitcham, Vicksburg: The Bloody Siege that Turned the Tide of the Civil War (2018), "It was World War II before the city celebrated the Fourth of July again on a regular basis. Prior to that, all businesses—including the banks—remained open." https://dailycaller.com/2018/07/04/why-city-of-vicksburg-did-not-celebrate-july-4th-for-81-years-after-civil-war/

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Ricky Nelson into Ricky Nelson's Death in a plane-crash. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was copied, attribution is not required. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 15:13, 25 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Granville rail disaster

[edit]

Hi there - thanks for your edit to the above article. Can you please provide a citation to a reliable source? It's a significant claim, and should therefore be adequately backed-up...or removed. thank you. --Merbabu (talk) 00:50, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

hello again...I've just removed the existing content from the article body and, by association, I've removed your edit to the lead. Sorry, but I think it's for the best...I've put my reasoning on the article talk page. Talk:Granville_rail_disaster#removed_unsourced_content
I (generally) agree with your related comments that leads don't need cites if the info is cited in the article. It's a stylistic choice that I would like to see adhered to more often on wikipedia. Unfortunately, many editors don't seem to agree. But, this is beside the point in the case of the Granville article. regards --Merbabu (talk) 05:00, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Compliment/Complement

[edit]

The referenced article after the sentence you changed on Kevin Federline says that Ms. Jackson said nice things about his parenting skills. This is referred to as a "compliment". If she "complemented" his parenting skills, that would mean she added her own skills to his, something she was not doing after their separation. PsyMar (talk) 04:53, 8 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop "redrafting" short descriptions

[edit]

Hello Valetude, it appears that you have taken it upon yourself to "redraft" short descriptions for a number of novels, including The Overstory and The Underground Railroad (novel), which I have reverted. As per WP:Short description, your edits are not appropriate. A short description is intended to disambiguate a title from other, similar ones, and provide a summary, as brief as possible, of the article's contents. The novel's year and author is all that is required according to these criteria. It is not necessary to summarize the topic of the novel nor to mention any awards it may have won. Please stop making these nonconstructive edits. Thank you. Revirvlkodlaku (talk) 14:08, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Copied from Brendan Bracken talk page:

[edit]

"A burning question...

... to my mind is: where and how did Bracken get the capital to launch his English career? Where would an Irish-Australian vagabond, no matter how resourceful, get that kind of money? How were his funds transferred?

For that matter, what about his banking records throughout?

Does anyone else find his whole career more than a little suspect? Shir-El too 07:51, 27 November 2021 (UTC)"
