Tales from the SMP is a side anthology series (meaning that it is comprised of "one-shot" style, nonlinear episodes, each with a different cast of characters) involving different members of the Dream SMP, and on rare occasions, external guests. Each episode is considered canonical to the lore of the SMP and explores past, present, and future stories from the SMP through the eyes of time-traveling protagonist Karl Jacobs. In most episodes, the other content creators involved play characters separate from their SMP characters.

Karl Jacobs is the current writer and creative director behind this series, although he collaborates with BadBoyHalo and members of the community to build the sets, create the skins, and manage other parts of the stream.

Although no new episodes have been released since February 2022, Karl Jacobs did confirm three months later that he was hoping to get one new Tales episode per month released eventually.[1] In August 2022, it was announced that Karl was partnering with Dark Horse Comics to adapt Tales from the SMP into a comic book series titled Time Traveler Tales.[2] Despite this new adaptation, the original series was not confirmed to have been cancelled.
