It may not have dethroned the Game Boy, but the Game Gear was certainly the 'best of the rest' when it came the early '90s handheld console wars.
Boasting a colour display, attractive design and a raft of quality games, the Game Gear outlived the Atari Lynx and PC Engine GT to present a viable alternative to Nintendo's dominance – and now it's getting its own (unofficial) book.
The tome will be penned by Sega-16's Ken Horowitz, who has previously written The Sega Arcade Revolution and Beyond Donkey Kong: A History of Nintendo Arcade Games.
"Due next year, this new work will take a deep dive into Sega's portable," says Horowitz on social media. "It presents a comprehensive narrative of the Game Gear's Japanese development and launch, as well as its launches in NA, Europe, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea."
Horowitz promises the as-yet-untitled book will also offer "a comprehensive look at the Majesco re-release and the Game Gear's legacy in the decades after with the GG Micro and downloadable games on the Wii and other platforms."
He adds that "dozens of contemporaneous documents and interviews with almost 30 executives, programmers, artists, composers, and producers, including the heads of Sega of America and Sega Europe, Tec Toy, and Ozi Soft," have formed part of the research for the book, which will also include a selection of the console's most notable games, "with extensive write-ups of 68 Game Gear-exclusive and variant titles from all regions."
To top it all off, there will be a guide to Game Gear accessories and console variations, as well as eleven developer Q&A-style interviews with programmers, artists, and composers.

This sounds great, but I would encourage the inclusion of the full library of Game Gear games and not just the exclusives.
I would also recommend including Analogue Pocket as the Game Gear adapter is a wonderful, wonderful thing. Would be good to interview them and include it as this is a huge reason for the recent surge in Game Gear interest. Far more than the frankly ludicrous Game Gear Micro.
I've been thoroughly enjoying exploring the Game Gear catalogue for the first time over the past 6 months or so. Crystal Warriors was a highlight and looking forward to starting Defenders of Oasis soon.
Oh also they should include the translation games. Royal Stone is a good example, and Coca Cola Kid. There's loads of them - Japan exclusives but you can buy fan translation carts. Definitely worth exploring.
Will keep an eye on the book, but I think the scope needs expanding - don't need loads of pages on it, but Analogue, Full Library and Translations all should be there in my opinion!
@nocdaes Without a doubt the Analogue Pocket has heightened my interest in Game Gear. I've bought dozens of carts over the last year or so, despite never owning original hardware. I was actually tempted to try and collect the full (PAL) library, but there are a couple of games that are way above what I'm willing to pay
The Game Gear is a really underrated handheld. I swapped my Game Boy for one in the early days and never looked back. I even had the TV tuner and made good use of it! Retromods deal with any aged screen issues, and even the battery life is no problem any more! Still love GG Shinobi, and Streets of Rage 2, Road Rash, so many top notch games for the era!
Coming from him this could be good.
