Smouldering hotspots (labelled with ‘a’) had overwintered and burned in the organic soil layer below the spruces of an unburned island. Green tree crowns of the fallen trees (labelled ‘b’) in the original unburned island (perimeter approximated in black) suggest that tree roots were damaged by subsurface burning.
