🚀 How Pinecone coined the term "vector database", built a category, and scaled to 10,000 signups a day with PLG.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking with Grigoriy (Greg) Kogan, VP of Marketing and Growth at Pinecone on a Tofu AMA. Greg discussed how they navigated the complex terrain category creation and product-led growth (PLG) to become a leader in vector databases - a term they coined from scratch.
Here are key takeaways that B2B marketers should note:
1. Patience and Persistence in Category Creation: Building a new category like "vector database" required extensive research, lots of testing, and a year-long commitment before it resonated and started getting adopted within the machine learning infrastructure sector.
2. Scaling with PLG: Pinecone's jump from 0 to 10,000 signups a day underscores the power of a seamless onboarding process, high-quality documentation, and a customer-centric approach. Focus your efforts on eliminating friction and enhancing the user experience.
3. Developer Advocacy is Critical for Dev Tools: Early on, Pinecone realized the importance of hiring a developer advocate to build trust and educate the developer community through content, tutorials, and sample code. When marketing to a technical audience, substance trumps style. Recruit practitioners who are passionate and can genuinely communicate and solve problems for your users.
4. Feedback is Gold: Both category creation and PLG thrive on continuously capturing and acting on user feedback. Pay close attention to user engagement, seek qualitative insights, and be ready to iterate swiftly. 📌
