Space Planner

General Summary:

The Space Planner will oversee the space planning and allocation process for all new and future administrative office spaces associated with Lurie Children's Hospital Medical Center. The Space Planner will contribute to establishing and managing standards and policies related to the space needs for a growing organization while working alongside the Planning, Design and Construction Team in the Facility Services Department. The primary focus is to provide strategic space and occupancy planning expertise in support of long-term supply and demand planning, real estate strategy, workplace design, space analysis and space efficiency within Lurie Children’s real estate portfolio.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Space Planning: Oversee the space planning and space allocation process, contribute to establishing and managing standards and policies associated with occupancy demands.
  • Space Utilization: Analyzing and assessing how existing space is currently used and identifying opportunities for improvement. This may involve rearranging furniture, redesigning layouts, or suggesting architectural changes. Identifies future and validates current organizational requirements for workspace needs, growth forecasting, specialized requirements, employee and seat count requirements at the business and employee level.
  • Client Interaction: Collaborating with internal clients to understand their needs, preferences, and functional requirements. Effective communication skills are essential to grasp their vision and translate it into practical design solutions.
  • Design Concept Development: Creating design concepts that align with the client's objectives, taking into account factors like aesthetics, functionality, and budget constraints. Able to develop supply and demand analytics, stack and block plans, move/migration strategies and prepare final executive level documents for leadership approval.
  • Software Proficiency: Bluebeam, Microsoft Office Suite, Serraview, and/or other visual aid tools to illustrate proposed space designs.
  • Budget Management: Working within budget constraints and proposing cost-effective solutions. This may involve sourcing furniture, fixtures, and materials that fit within the allocated budget.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring that space designs comply with building codes, accessibility standards, and any other relevant regulations.
  • Project Coordination: Collaborating with other professionals such as architects, interior designers, contractors, and project managers to ensure the successful execution of space planning projects.
  • Trend Awareness: Staying updated on current design trends, innovative technologies, and industry best practices to provide modern and relevant solutions.
  • Other job functions as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Post-secondary education in Interior Design, Architecture, Interior Architecture, or related area preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years work experience in interior design, space & occupancy planning, and workspace consulting is desired.
  • Computer Skills – proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Smartsheet, and Bluebeam; familiar with Serraview a bonus.
  • Other Ideal Skills & Knowledge – construction process, project management, negotiations, organized, good written and oral communication skills.
