Working in social media, burnout is a huge issue. Over half of social media professionals report burnout within the last three months.
Additionally:
• 42% of marketers plan to leave social media within two years.
• 20% want to change careers in the next 12 months.
• Many professionals leave for better career growth opportunities or a healthier work-life balance.

14 years ago today, on June 30, 2010, the first 'World Social Media Day' was celebrated. Founded by Pete Cashmore and Mashable, it was envisioned as "a day to celebrate the changes in media that have empowered us to stay connected." These were the days of Meetup (dot) com, and over 600 IRL Social Media Day meetups popped up across the globe.
At that time, working in social media felt a bit more optimistic. Burnout wasn't as prevalent, and there wasn't a constant need to be 'on' 24/7. It was an exciting and optimistic time - that same year Instagram, Pinterest, the first Vidcon, and Sprout Social all launched.

Having just returned from VidCon, I'm reminded of the need to spend time with people offline. As someone who is 'perpetually online', it's something I'm not particularly great at. However, taking time away from the screen and hanging with friends, family, and colleagues IRL makes a world of difference.
I've been fortunate that Sprout Social, Inc. l graciously sponsored some of my time spent with my community IRL (my trip to Cannes). And, on this World Social Media Day, it's important to remember that while social media allows us to make connections, taking time offline is equally crucial.

So, I want to give a shoutout to Sprout Social, Inc. for not only allowing me personally to spend that time with friends IRL but also for their tools that help many of us working in social media make our lives a bit easier.
They enable us to take a step back from time to time. From scheduling posts (so you can take a step back and enjoy the weekend), to simplified measurement, one dashboard for tracking & respond to messages and mentions, etc.
So, remember to step away, schedule those posts, and enjoy some time offline.
Happy World Social Media Day! 🌐✨
