Meet this week's #WiOWednesday feature, Dr. Ikbal Sencan-Egilmez, principal investigator in the Biomedical Optics and Neurovascular Imaging Laboratory and assistant professor of radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. From early childhood, filled with nature documentaries and family puzzle-solving, Ikbal was curious about the natural world. Today, her team pioneers in vivo optical microscopy techniques to unravel the relationships between oxygenation, blood flow, microvascular structure, and metabolism in health and disease. Despite facing numerous challenges including biases and scarcity of role models, she says her greatest accomplishment is her perseverance. Ikbal's pro tip: use the Pareto Principle! This principle focuses on the most impactful tasks while ensuring everything is done meticulously, suggesting that 80% of outcomes come from 20% of inputs. Her full story can be read in the 2024 SPIE Women in Optics notebook, found on our website: https://lnkd.in/gyG3Pc4Q #WomenInOptics #WomenInSTEM
