Delve into our interactive “Live Emotion” gallery to explore some of the most iconic venues across sport, live performances and other major global events from the past 40 years. Our unique design history has acted as the backdrop for much bigger stories and moments — those of community, sustainability and passion — for four decades and counting. As we commemorate this milestone, we want to say thank you and celebrate with you, the individuals across the world who fill these venues with the emotion that gives them meaning. Populous' long history of involvement in the Olympics dates back to Atlanta 1996 and includes designing the main stadiums for London, Sydney and Sochi. Each of these stadiums played host to the spectacle of the opening ceremony. Tonight's Paris opening ceremony will be the first outside a stadium, with athletes arriving by boat on the River Seine. To honor this break with tradition, this article from the latest issue of Populous Magazine examines the history of Olympic opening ceremonies. Read the full story: https://bit.ly/4fnrydM

This week, Sophie Hogben and Taryn McQueen had the honour of speaking at the Women in Sports Summit 2024. Having designed over 16 elite training centres for Australian teams, Populous has seen the positive impact of equitable design principles on clubs and communities.   These training facilities, including Brighton Homes Arena, Sydney Swans HQ, and The Home Of the Matildas, show how designing high-performance centres as flexible community hubs allows teams to build audiences, engage fans, and create pathways for increased visibility, sustainable revenue generation and diversification of income to enhance sporting programs.   Thank you to Ministry Of Sport and their presenting partner City of Gold Coast for another inspiring event and opportunity to discuss how we can support pathways into women’s sport. #WomenInSports

The Australia national women’s football team, the Matildas, begin their campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympics tomorrow with a game against Germany. Achieving their best-ever finish of fourth place at the 2023 World Cup, the team’s recent success at major tournaments is built on the foundations of a strategy and footballing structure implemented by Football Australia. This includes the creation of a new bespoke training facility, the Home of the Matildas. Designed by Populous and opened in 2023, the facility delivers an experience unparalleled in Australian football, aspiring to become the finest female-focused facility in the Asia-Pacific region. It also provides year-round access to elite training and match facilities for both junior and senior Victorian football communities. Good luck to all teams competing in the Games! We are very proud that Populous recently received two prestigious Australian Institute of Architecture (AIA) NSW awards for our work on the Sydney Swans Training Centre — one for Commercial Architecture and another as a Commendation in Heritage Architecture. Being part of The Swans HQ project was a true honor and a great experience for our whole team. The project reinforces Populous’ innovation approach to performance training facilities, and our commitment to combining elite training insights from different sports around the world with individual team requirements and client vision. The attendees on the night to receive the awards were Joshua Robson, Elisa Ervin, and Henry Coates who led the project.

We are so excited that FLOAT — our concept to reuse the components of the roof of the Olympic Stadium in Montreal — has been selected as one of the winning concepts. Voting is now open to the public: https://lnkd.in/eVc9znw6 Designed by Roger Taillibert for the 1976 Summer Olympics, the Olympic Stadium in Montreal is cited as a masterpiece of organic modern architecture. FLOAT reuses components of the stadium roof to create four floating islands connected by an arched jetty. This proposal combines sustainability, fun and creativity to deliver a unique gathering place rooted in its community and honoring the boldness of the 1976 Olympic Stadium. Vote for FLOAT today.
