They say that if you want to go far, go together. And if you want to go fast, go alone. So how are you thinking about your career? Careers are supposed to span 2-3 decades. And you're going to work 15-20 places over that time. Maybe you'll start your own company. But how are you going to learn the skills that you need in order to succeed in all of these different roles when the skills themselves are changing by the day? That's where community comes into play. You need a group of people that don't work at your company, that are doing the same things that you're doing, that are solving similar challenges. And you need those people both for the tactical and practical skills that you can share together, and you need those people for the emotional support. Because your partner, your spouse, your parents, your kids, none of them are going to be able to empathize with the work that you do on a daily basis. What you need is a group of people that have a shared experience, a similar set of beliefs and values. And when you have those people, you can accomplish almost anything. And it can be as specific as how to engage an outbound prospect with a cold email and as general as how to build a profitable, efficient growth business. But regardless of the challenges that you're facing, you need a community. You need a group of people. It's not something that you can do alone. Navigating your career is not a solo-enterprise anymore. It has to be with a group of people because it is through the community itself that you are going to learn what you need in order to succeed. So if you want to go fast, go alone, do your own thing. But if you want a career that spans decades, go together through a community. That's why we built Pavilion. Here's the #1 one biggest mistake I see managers make: You want to be liked more than you want to be respected. You THINK your first team, the people you're most responsible for, are the reps that report to you. So, you want to be the hero. You want to be celebrated. You want to be looked up to. You love being their favorite boss. Because of this, you think your job is to go into the executive meeting and to bring back the spoils of war! A better comp plan, a spiff, quota relief, three months paid vacation... But that's not your job. Your first team are not your reps. Your first team, as a member of the executive team, are your peers. You CANNOT be trusted if all you ever do is advocate for your department. If all you ever do is advocate for more resources. If all you ever do is ask for more money and more stuff for your side. As a CEO, as somebody that's trying to have you guide me on how to make efficient capital allocation decisions, I can't trust you. I start discounting your advice. You have to understand your first team are your peers on the executive team. You have to understand that sometimes you're going to bring back tough news to the people that report to you. And you're going to have to stand by it and believe it. Not just pay lip service to it. REALLY mean it. You have to advocate on behalf of the company before you advocate on behalf of the people that work for you. That may mean you're not always going to get the mug for greatest boss. And sometimes people are going to have a problem with you. And sometimes you're going to have to push people out of their comfort zone. That's because your first team are your peers. P.S. The best place to start is reading Patrick Lencioni's canonical book, "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team." It teaches you how to think about the executive team as your first team.
