Helping law firm owners grow wildly profitable firms | Trial lawyer & Founder of The Mike Morse Law Firm | Over $1.5B recovered for our clients | Keynote Speaker | Best-Selling Author | CEO of FIREPROOF

When I took my daughters to the Bow Wow Brunch 10 years ago, I didn't intend to leave with a puppy. I took my two oldest daughters to the fundraiser for Michigan Humane thinking I'd bid on some stuff at the silent auction and make a donation. Then my daughters found Jessi. She was six weeks old and, as you'd expect of a puppy, really cute. I told my daughters we couldn't take Jessi home. Not too long before, we'd lost our first dog Shadow at the age of 19. I told them that even though Jessi was sweet, I wasn't ready for another dog. But I was overmatched. Jessi looked at me with her big puppy dog eyes. My two little girls looked at me with big "please daddy please" eyes... The dog came home with us—after a stop at the pet supply store since we had nothing at the house. Fast forward 10 years, and adopting Jessi is one of the best things I have done for my family. I've now had 2 dogs in my life, Shadow and Jessi. Both became fixtures in our home and our family. Both came from Michigan Humane. I love Michigan Humane because of the impact they've had on my family and the great work they do in our community. That's why I was happy to donate $1 million to the organization last week. I'm posting about it here because Michigan Humane needs help. They're dealing with shortages of veterinarians and food. The number of animals in their care has gone up. Donations are down. If you'd like to learn more about Michigan Humane and make a donation, you can here:   https://lnkd.in/ePqG9Nwv And while I love going to (and hosting) Michigan Humane events, there is at least one real advantage to donating online. You don't risk impulsively adopting a puppy.

I can divide my career as a law firm owner into two distinct chapters— • the years before Gino Wickman became my business coach • the years since I decided to hire him. When I started my law firm in Detroit in 1995, it was just me. By 2005, I had seven people on the team. By 2007, I had 19. The firm was doing well financially, but I was drowning. I was working all the time. The stress was affecting my health and my marriage.  I had three daughters under the age of 10 at home but barely saw them. I was trying to be a great lawyer, a great law firm owner, a great father. It wasn't working, and I was at my wit's end. I first met Gino, the founder of EOS, around the time this photo with my oldest daughter was taken in 2006. We talked about working together. But I couldn't stomach the thought of paying Gino several thousands of hard-earned dollars to spend 8 hours with him every quarter not working. It would be almost two years before I'd finally hire Gino. More than 15 years later, he's still my business coach today.  And I wish I pulled the trigger the day I met him. Since then, our team at the Mike Morse Law Firm has grown from 17 people to more than 200. Our annual revenue has grown 10x. And more importantly, I learned how to empower my team to do their best work. As our business numbers have continued going up, my stress from the business has continued decreasing. I've had more time and more freedom to work on things I love doing and am great at. It also lets me spend more time with my daughters. I just got back yesterday from two weeks in Croatia with two of my daughters, a trip that would have been unthinkable to me in 2006.  And I didn’t interact with my office once. Abraham Lincoln said that a person who represents himself has a fool for a lawyer. The same principle applies in business. Finally hiring Gino is one of the best decisions I've made in my career. One of my worst decisions was waiting two years after meeting him to take the leap. Do you rely on coaches in your business?

I love being a lawyer. But if I wasn’t a lawyer, I’d probably be in advertising. I’ve always had a knack for marketing and sales. Maybe it started when I was a young waiter and knew that the more food and wine I sold, the more money I took home at the end of the night. When I started working as a lawyer in the '90s, all the bad legal advertising made me cringe. Most lawyers' commercials still do. I didn't want to participate in that. But at the same time, we are fighting for attention, right? Every one of us thinks that our firm is the best and that we can do the best job. I believe it. I hope you do too. But it's not enough that we believe that. We have to convince the public. That starts with making sure people know we exist. And so many firms spend a lot of money on vanilla marketing that won't work. When we started advertising for the Mike Morse Law Firm in 2011, I hadn't found my own Cherry Garcia approach yet. Our first commercial wasn't good. But we learned, improved, and invested more along the way. Now, we've won multiple Golden Gavel Awards for making some of the best commercials in the industry. You don't need a huge marketing budget to be effective. You need is to stand out in a world of vanilla. You need to find your Cherry Garcia (the greatest ice cream flavor of them all). One of our first Fireproof clients was a personal injury lawyer in Nevada.  He's been with us from the beginning. When he started with Fireproof Performance, his ads and marketing were vanilla. After working with us and a few of our vendors, things changed for his firm. First, his intake doubled.   Then it tripled. Now, his firm is one of the biggest in Nevada. He stands out in his market because of his Cherry Garcia approach. This concept is so important that I dedicated a chapter to it in Fireproof, my book. https://a.co/d/8cDBdhl If you're ready to grow your firm, pick up a copy of the book or DM me with "fireproof". I'm happy to spend a few minutes looking over your firm's marketing (website, google reviews, social media, billboards, or videos) and share my thoughts on what's working and what isn't. Because Cherry Garcia beats vanilla every time.

When my late father-in-law Steve told me that I needed a business coach, I had 2 objections: I don't have the time. I don't have the money. That was in the mid 2000's. I had been drowning at work for years. It was affecting my health and my personal life. I knew something had to change. But I truly believed I didn't have the time for a coach. I now know that my feeling that I didn't have time to invest in coaching was precisely why I needed to invest in coaching. If I wanted my future (and my firm's) to look healthier and more sustainable than the present or past, I had to learn a different way to relate to my business and my work. The pain had gotten bad enough that I was ready to listen to Steve's advice. When I started working with Gino Wickman, we were the first law firm to adopt EOS. I still didn't feel like I had the time or the money. But I found the money and made the time. Only after making those investments did I start listening to my coach. That's when I started becoming a better leader. And our firm got healthier and more resilient. Fast forward to today, and we've now worked with 200 law firm owners at Fireproof Performance. The two most common objections we hear from law firm owners considering working with us to grow their law firms are—you guessed it—time and money. I tell those lawyers what my father-in-law told me then. Find the money. Make the time. If you need a coach but feel like you don't have the time or money to invest, you're not alone. I think everybody who's ever had a coach felt the same way.
