Nearly half of all students in public P-12 schools in the United States are children of color, while schools only have about 20% teachers of color. This most significantly impacts students of color, who can have drastically different educational experiences based on where they live. Advancing policies and practices to dismantle the racial and economic barriers embedded in the American education system
About us
EdTrust promotes high academic achievement for all students at all levels—pre-kindergarten through college. Our goal is to close the gaps in opportunity and achievement that consign far too many young people—especially those from low-income families or who are Black, Latino, or American Indian—to lives on the margins of the American mainstream. Although many organizations speak up for the adults employed by schools and colleges, we speak up for students, especially those whose needs and potential are often overlooked. We evaluate every policy, every practice, and every dollar spent through a single lens: what is right for students. We work alongside educators, parents, students, policymakers, and civic and business leaders in communities across the country, providing practical assistance in their efforts to transform schools and colleges into institutions that serve all students well. We analyze local, state, and national data and use what we learn to help build broader understanding of achievement and opportunity gaps and the actions necessary to close them. We participate actively in national and state policy debates, bringing lessons learned from on-the-ground work and from unflinching data analyses to build the case for policies that will help all students and schools reach high levels of achievement. Our Core Beliefs: We believe in the power of education to close the gaps that separate low-income students and students of color from other young Americans. We believe that schools and colleges, appropriately organized, can help virtually all students master the knowledge they need to succeed. We believe long-standing gaps in opportunity, achievement, and attainment have roots inside and outside of schools. And though we know these gaps are stubborn, we also know they are not inevitable. We believe a strong education improves the lives of young people, is vital to sustaining our democracy, and strengthens America.

Did you know that some schools impose serious and potentially harmful #SchoolDiscipline practices for minor violations such as dress and hair code violations? Often these codes can infringe on and discriminate against the identities of students of color and students with disabilities. #Discrimination https://edtru.st/SDSEAD

“One year ago, the 2023 Supreme Court decided to do away w/ #AffirmativeAction, which has had a chilling domino effect on race-conscious policies across the country.” In a new blog, Wil Del Pilar, EdTrust’s SVP, explains that “with strategic advocacy, this turn of events could open policy windows at both the state and federal level that could spur the evolution of P-16 policies and practices, removing barriers that have traditionally impacted students of color and students from low-income backgrounds, without having to rely on affirmative action.” Read here: https://edtru.st/4cIroLP

"The barriers to college access for immigrant students are intricately compounded and vary by state. In any given state, an undocumented student may or may not be able to obtain in-state tuition, state financial aid, a state identification, or work authorization. Access is the name of the game." - Grace Aiyedogbon, EdTrust's Senior Manager for Digital Communications https://edtru.st/3VH2mFT #UndocumentedInHigherEd

“Removing barriers to ensure that student-parents can complete their degrees requires systemic changes like governmental investment in child care and debt reform; however, institutions can make a number of impactful low-cost changes on their own.”- Jessica Lee, director of the Pregnant Scholar Initiative, and co-director of the University of California College of the Law San Francisco’s Center for WorkLife Law, shares strategies higher ed institutions can implement to ensure that #StudentParents are supported post #AffirmativeAction ban. https://edtru.st/3xCcpEa

#ESSER funds are going away, but students’ needs are not. Many districts need more funding to continue supporting students, particularly those that are facing the steepest fiscal cliffs. This guide offers equity centered actions for states & districts to take beyond #ESSER: https://edtru.st/3uKEdVj

While schools continue to address long standing inequities that were exposed and exacerbated by the pandemic, it’s essential that districts’ limited resources—including remaining #ESSER funds—are being used to equitably address student needs. The Alliance for Resource Equity, led by EdTrust and Education Resource Strategies, has created resources for advocates to understand these issues and discuss how district and state leaders can make budgetary decisions that don’t have an outsized impact on the students who need these funds the most. https://edtru.st/3VTpoKQ
