Happy Pride and Juneteenth Eve. Grateful to have spent the morning with the team at Everwise Credit Union. The workshop, “Building Across: Practices for Solidarity & Allyship during Juneteenth, Pride & Beyond“ has become the most requested for this month and I am honored to tell the journeys and stories of Ancestors and communities that advocated and made it possible for folks like me to be. We discussed intersectionality and tangible practices for anti-racism while learning about the important historical figures and social context that shaped their work and lived experience. I also always appreciate a good Q&A moment and was able to respond directly to individual questions. Thank you again for being open to a challenging but necessary telling of history and the work ahead.

On this Trans Day of Visibility; there is so much to reflect on. Last week I turned 33. #Jesusyear. When facilitating Trans Masc Support Groups—I would provide a series of prompts for the group to envision what their life would be like at 80. So many shared that they didn’t think they would make it to 18 let alone 30 so this was a challenge. For so many of us, navigating the day to day feels like you an uphill battle—you don’t know who is for you, or who is against you and the news headlines remind us of the worst possibility. It would break my heart every time—the fear and inability to envision individual and collective futures. Our sessions, however, would end with joy and a renewed sense of possibility. Living long and being loved should not be a privilege; but it’s not lost on me that this world has made it so. I am beyond grateful that I speak life and possibility while actively bridging understanding. Thankful to the Minnesota Department of Revenue for continuing to partner on this work. I also can’t wait to share updates on the work Chosen Collective Consulting has done over this past quarter and for what’s to come. • Celebrating William Dorsey Swann, a trailblazer who courageously led one of the first known queer resistance groups in the late 19th century. Through his iconic drag balls in Washington, D.C., Swann provided a vital haven for Black queer individuals to express themselves amid societal oppression. His activism, marked by resilience and defiance, faced legal consequences, yet his legacy as an early LGBTQ+ rights advocate remains a powerful chapter in American history. #MondayMotivation #ChosenCollectiveConsulting #WilliamDorseySwann #LGBTQHistory #ResilienceAndResistance

    • Yellow text on black background reads, Chosen Collective Consulting. White text on black background reads, Monday Motivation Ancestor Edition. William Dorsey Swann. 1858-1925. Zodiac sign: unknown. There is a picture of Swann elegantly posing in a white dress with ruffles.
    • Yellow text on black background reads, William Dorsey Swann, born in 1858, was a trailblazing figure and an early LGBTQ+ rights advocate in the United States. Notably, he is recognized as one of the first known American individuals to lead a queer resistance group. Born into slavery, Swan lived through a tumultuous period in American history. Alongside the text is a picture of Swann in the same white dress alongside a dapper man.
    • Yellow text on black background reads, In the late 19th century, Swann organized and hosted drag balls in Washington, D.C. These events provided a space for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly Black queer individuals, to express themselves freely in an otherwise oppressive societal context. Swann's gatherings were not only celebrations of identity but also acts of resistance against the prevailing discrimination and persecution. Below the text is a photo of Swann with the same dapper man, they are both smiling into the camera as they strike a pose.
    • Yellow text on black background reads, Swann's activism was especially remarkable considering the challenges he faced during a time when both racism and homophobia were pervasive. Unfortunately, his advocacy and community-building efforts were eventually met with legal consequences. In 1888, Swan was arrested and convicted for "keeping a disorderly house" due to his role in organizing drag balls. Above the text is a scanned newspaper clipping that reads "The Queen Raided. Unexpected interruption to her banquet and ball. Her majesty shows fight with a policeman- In the contest her handsome dress was torn off - All landed in the station house."
    • Yellow text on black background reads, While Swann's story may not be as widely known as some other historical figures, he stands as an early symbol of resilience, resistance, and the pursuit of LGBTQ+ rights in the face of adversity. His legacy is an important part of the broader history of LGBTQ+ activism in the United States. Alongside the text is a photo of Swann and the same man looking intensely into each other's eyes.

In February and all year long—we take time to honor Black people who devoted their lives to community, justice, and freedom. Be sure to check out our #MondayMotivation #AncestorEdition which always highlights both widely know and “hidden” figures who forged a path towards liberation. At Chosen we amplify the stories of those living at the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, socio-economic status and disability. Today, we amplify the Father of Black History--who dreamed up these celebrations over a century ago. #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM #Blacklivesmatter #BlackHistory
