Creating Space Underground - Coast to Coast - For 25 Years

About us

“Creating Space Underground” has been our mission and our passion for 25 years. Our tunnel, trenchless, and geostructural practice combines our knowledge of subsurface conditions, ground behavior, and site constraints with a keen understanding of the risks in underground construction. Constructability, efficiency, and practicality are central to every project we undertake. Our staff’s real-world experience helping our contractor clients solve the challenges of underground construction informs our design solutions for project owners. With offices strategically located across the U.S., our team of more than 70 geotechnical, geo-structural, tunnel, trenchless technology and construction design engineers and geologists offer a vast knowledge of ground conditions and behavior to our clients. Since our founding in 1999, the Brierley Associates’ team is dedicated to the service of our clients as we “Create Space Underground”. Thanks for having us, APECS! Thomas Pullen and Neal Wedding, PE Wedding shared their knowledge on Underground Vertical and Horizontal Design and Construction at the recent @Architects and Professional Engineers in Cincinnati Service meeting. APECS is dedicated to improving the quality of life in the City of Cincinnati and to playing key roles in providing a wide variety of City services. APECS has three basic objectives: 1) a unified perspective and voice as advocates for the profession; 2) organize and produce programs designed to advance the profession; and 3) to make sure state and city law is followed within the professional classifications. We look forward to coming back next summer! #CityofCincinnatti #APECS #CreatingSpaceUnderground

We’re thrilled to share that the I-35W underground stormwater storage facility will receive the Public Works Project of the Year Award! Awarded by the American Public Works Association (APWA), this honor for the top project in the $25 million to $75 million category recognizes excellence in management, administration, and implementation of public works projects. Barr collaborated with our client the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), our design-team partners TKDA and Brierley Associates, and contractor joint venture Kraemer North America and Nicholson Construction on this first-of-its-kind project. The I-35W underground stormwater storage facility is designed to reduce the depth, duration, and frequency of flooding along I-35W at 42nd Street, a major interstate in Minneapolis. • Late in the evening on May 2, 2024 the HDD was successfully completed beneath the Newport News Shipping Channel after almost 24 hours over two days of continuous pipe pullback operations. The operation commenced early on May 1 with tugs towing the 5700 feet of fused 42-in HDPE pipe across the James River from its moored location near the south shore. The pipe was then carefully pulled aboard the pipe handling barge using rollers and crane cradles until it was in position at the pipe pusher assembly just above the previously installed 66-in steel casing pipe. About 150 ft of pipe was then advanced into the casing to test all equipment. Pipe ballasting using river water commenced from a 6-in HDPE pipe and was thereafter continuously monitored using load cells to ensure that the 42-in pipe remained filled with water at all times during the pullback. Once the pipe pusher was reassembled and tested, pipe pullback operations commenced at about 10 pm. The pipe was advanced in approximately 31-foot sections, initially descending to the bottom tangent at El -160 ft before eventually beginning the ascent back to the surface. Brierley’s Jim Williams was onsite with the drillers throughout, carefully checking actual pullback loads for each pipe joint against the estimated loads from our design calculations. At approximately 8 pm on May 2, the barrel reamer at the front of the pipe string emerged from the casing onshore in Newport News, 5614 linear feet from the barge, indicating the successful world record completion of the HDD.

  • Thanks to Garney for producing this terrific video! This project is located close to the mouth of the James River, where it drains into the Chesapeake Bay. The soils underlying the river in this area are geologically recent, poorly consolidated and very soft marine sediments that provide minimal strength and pipeline support. Accurate characterization of the subsurface materials has been critical for assessing optimal burial depth, pipeline support, and marine installation methodologies. Brierley Associates Corporation developed the geologic interpretation and overall site characterization based on the Geotechnical DataReport, and prepared one-dimensional and three-dimensional Finite Element Modeling of anticipated short-term and long-term settlement of the soft surficial sediments related to the planned trenched pipe installation methods. We also performed supplemental geotechnical programs both on the north shore at Newport News and additional overwater deep borings for the revised alignment of the HDD and pipe casing design to the south of the shipping channel. These supplemental studies provided critical inputs to the transition between the onshore trenched portion of the pipe and the HDD component as well as geotechnical parameters key to HDD design including pipe buckling, pipe pullback forces, and hydrofracture assessment.

Garney’s marine crew in Newport News, Virginia, is gearing up to execute the next record-breaking step in constructing a force main below the sixth busiest shipping port in the U.S. This pipe is key to connecting the new Boat Harbor Pump Station to the new Nansemond Treatment Plant, situated on opposite banks of the James River. This is a critical phase of HRSD’s SWIFT program to improve water quality in Chesapeake Bay.

  • PL19TUN Cedar Creek Tunnel Walkthrough Herrenknecht AG’s Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM) machine completed the Cedar Creek Tunnel on December 4, 2023, and is already tunneling on the Hollywood Lake Tunnel located south of Athens, TX. The Owner’s Project Team walked through the Cedar Creek Tunnel yesterday to visually inspect the segments prior to placing the 84-inch welded steel pipe in the tunnel. The group photo was taken inside the tunnel directly beneath Cedar Creek. By looking at the conditions of the 10-ft I.D. segments in the tunnel, you would never know the challenging geology and shallow groundwater that exists just beyond these segment walls. The success of this project can be attributed to the great collaborative effort between Owner, Contractor, and Engineer. TSJV has done a superb job so far and we look forward to continued success on the project as we push towards the finish line. Kevin Mandeville is Brierley’s PM on Section 19 which includes a total of five tunnel crossings. Brierley’s role included development of a Geotechnical Baseline Report, Specifications, OPCC, and Drawings for the trenchless portions of the project.
