Introduction

At Common Sense Media ("we", "us", and "our"), we value your privacy. This Privacy Notice describes how we collect, use, and share information that can directly or indirectly identify an individual (“Personal Information”) gathered in connection with your completion of the demographic survey, and/or other survey collecting Personal Information that is conducted by us (collectively, “Surveys”) that links to or references this Privacy Notice.

We do not sell Personal Information about you that is collected in connection with a Survey or otherwise.

Our Surveys are intended for individuals 18 years or older. Survey completion is voluntary and lack of completion will not affect your ability to access any of our services. If you choose to respond to one of these Surveys, you agree to our use of the Personal Information collected in accordance with this Privacy Notice.

Information collection

We may collect Personal Information about you that you provide as part of completing a Survey such as:

  • Identifying information: Our Surveys do not request identifying information (e.g. name, home address, or telephone number.) However, the Surveys may enable you to provide us your email if you want to sign up for newsletters.
  • System/log information: Our Surveys are conducted electronically on our website, and collect standard Internet log information including your IP address, device details and browser details (browser type and language), access times and referring website addresses. To ensure that the Surveys are well managed and to facilitate improved navigation, we or our service provider(s) may also use cookies (small text files stored in a user's browser) or Web beacons (electronic images that allow us to count users who have accessed particular content and to access certain cookies) to collect aggregate data.
  • Sensitive information: Questions may include more sensitive information such as age, ethnicity, race, political affiliation, income range and other details about your family situation (e.g. age ranges of your children, schools they attend, household description)
  • Other information: Any other information about you that is relevant to the survey such as preferences of participants, feedback on how useful our services are to you, and any concerns you might have about school preparedness for your children.

As mentioned above, Personal Information that is collected from you as part of a Survey may include sensitive Personal Information. We will, where necessary, obtain your explicit consent to collect and use such information.

Information use

We use your Personal Information that we collect in connection with a Survey for the purposes described in the Survey such as understanding how the features and services provided by us are useful to the diverse communities we aim to serve. We use the information on the basis of your consent or where we have a legitimate interest or other legal basis for such use. The Personal Information you submit to us may be used to customize or improve our Surveys.

We may also use your Personal Information for marketing purposes, or to send you promotional materials or communications regarding services provided by us. We may also contact you to seek feedback on services provided by us or for market or other research purposes. Your Personal Information may also be used to protect our rights or property and that of our users.

Disclosure of information to third parties

Any Personal Information that we have referenced above under “Information collection” may be disclosed to the third parties identified in this section for the purposes set forth herein.

  • We may provide your Personal Information to the service providers that we use in connection with the performance of the Survey, who help us with different tasks including analysis of the data collected in the Survey.
  • Your Personal Information may also be disclosed to other third parties in order to respond to your requests or inquiries; as part of a corporate transaction (such as a sale, divestiture, reorganization, merger or acquisition); or where those parties handle information on our behalf.
  • Personal Information may also be disclosed to law enforcement, regulatory or other government agencies, or to other third parties, in each case to comply with legal, regulatory, or national security obligations or to respond to mandatory legal requests.

We will provide notice and obtain your consent before sharing Personal Information about you with an unaffiliated third party that is not performing services for us, except if such sharing is otherwise permitted by this Privacy Notice or the Survey.

Information about you that we have aggregated with information about other individuals or have otherwise made anonymous such that your identity cannot be determined may be shared by us with third parties without restriction except to the extent otherwise set forth in the Survey.

These information collection, use, and disclosure activities may involve the processing of your Personal Information in countries or jurisdictions without data protection rules similar to those in effect in your area of residence. In each case, we take care to use appropriate safeguards to ensure your Personal Information remains protected. When we transfer personal information outside countries other than those in the European Economic Area and UK (EEA+), we strive to comply with the cross-border data transfer rules of those countries, as described in the European Economic Area/UK Disclosures section.

Information retention

We retain Personal Information as necessary for the duration of the purpose outlined in this Privacy Notice. Notwithstanding the duration of the purpose, we may retain your Personal Information if necessary to comply with our legal or professional obligations, enforce our agreements, or resolve disputes.

Right to access and control your Personal Information

You have choices about how your Personal Information is collected, used and shared.

Depending on the jurisdiction in which you are located, you may have the right to request that we modify, delete, or stop processing your Personal Information, and you may also have the right to request that we provide specific information regarding the Personal Information we hold about you.

Even if no specific rights are granted to you under applicable regulations, Common Sense Media will respond to any request to exercise rights regarding your Personal Information. To exercise your rights please complete our Personal Data Rights Request Form.

Applicable laws may also give you the right to lodge a complaint with a local supervisory authority related to this Privacy Notice.

We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your rights with respect to your Personal Information.

Information security

We have in place reasonable commercial standards of technology and operational security to protect all Personal Information from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration or destruction.

European Economic Area/UK Disclosures

Who does this Section apply to? This Section applies to users and other relevant individuals who are based in the European Economic Area and the UK (together, the EEA+; who we refer to as "EEA+ Users"). All references to "you", "your" or "user(s)" in this Section are references to such EEA+ Users only.

Why do we have specific EEA+ disclosures? Applicable data protection laws, including the EU General Data Protection Regulation and the so-called ‘UK GDPR’ (together, the GDPR), require us to provide information about our data processing practices and the rights available to relevant EEA+ Users.

What are your rights in relation to your Personal Information? Under certain circumstances, by law you have the right to:

  • Access. Request access to your Personal Information.
  • Correction. Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete Personal Information that we hold about you.
  • Erasure. Request erasure of your Personal Information.
  • Objection. Object to our reliance on our Legitimate Interests (see below) as the legal basis of processing of your Personal Information
  • Restriction. Request the restriction of processing of your Personal Information until we address your request, establish its accuracy or our reasons for processing it.
  • Portability. Request the transfer of your Personal Information in a portable format to you or a third party of your choice.
  • Withdraw consent. Withdraw your consent to any processing that relies on it as a legal basis (see below).

How to exercise your rights? If you want to exercise any of the rights described above, you can do so by using our Privacy Requests Portal. Typically, you will not have to pay a fee to access your Personal Information or to exercise any of the other rights listed above. However, we may charge a reasonable fee if your request is clearly unfounded, repetitive or excessive, or, we may refuse to comply with that request. We may need to request specific information from you to help us confirm your identity and expedite your request.

Your right to complain. We would love to be able to resolve your questions, requests and complaints about your Personal Information directly. However, if you feel we have not been able to satisfactorily resolve an issue, you may contact your local data protection supervisory authority.

Purpose limitation. We will only use your Personal Information for the purposes for which we collected it as listed above, unless we reasonably consider that we need to use it for another reason and that reason is compatible with the original purpose. If we need to use your Personal Information for an unrelated purpose, we will update this Privacy Notice and we will explain the legal basis which allows us to do so. Please note that we may process your Personal Information without your knowledge or consent, in compliance with the above rules, where this is required or permitted by law (including the GDPR).

International transfers. We are headquartered in the United States. The Personal Information that we collect from and about you will be stored and processed in the United States and may be stored and processed in other countries outside of the EEA+. However, it is our policy to ensure that adequate contractual or other safeguards are applied to Personal Information transferred outside of the EEA+ where required by the GDPR. Children's privacy protection

We are committed to protecting children's online privacy. The Surveys are not designed for or intentionally targeted to individuals under 18. If we obtain actual knowledge that we have received such information, we will take steps to delete it.

Changes to our Privacy Notice

We may modify or amend this Privacy Notice from time to time at our discretion but any material changes to our practices will not apply retroactively. When we make changes to this Privacy Notice, we will amend the revision date at the top of this page and such modified or amended Privacy Notice shall be effective as to you and your information as of that revision date.
