Dr. Johnathon Ohnn, better known as The Spot, is the main antagonist of Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Verse film trilogy.
He was once a scientist at Alchemax who transported a radioactive spider from Earth-42 to Earth-1610B using Kingpin's Super-Collider, causing it to bite Miles Morales and turn him into Spider-Man. During the Super-Collider's destruction, Johnathon was mutated by a batch of dark matter he was carrying, transforming him into a universe-travelling supervillain, who despite starting off as incompetent, ends up becoming a massive threat to the entire Multiverse upon strengthening his power by visiting the Alchemaxes of several universes, becoming Miles' arch-nemesis in the process.
He is voiced by Jason Schwartzman, who also played Ethan Dulles in Slackers, Gag Halfrunt in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Gideon Gordon Graves in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and Josto Fadda in Fargo, and by Kōsuke Toriumi in the Japanese dub, who also voiced Acnologia in Fairy Tail and Szayel Aporro Granz in Bleach.
Personality[]
At first, the Spot appears as a goofy, comedic and incompetent thief who, in spite of committing crimes, was pretty friendly towards those around him and often tried to avoid harming bystanders in the way. Because he believes himself to be responsible for giving Miles Morales his powers, he feels very entitled about it and expects to be given respect for it. He has also declared himself to be Miles' arch-nemesis, something that Miles himself didn't initially see him as. He unfairly blames Spider-Man for his mutation despite it actually being the work of himself and Kingpin for the creation of the Collider in the first place. He also extends his hatred to other spider people for getting in his way.
Despite this, he appears to have a generally amiable nature towards others, casually conversing with the other Spider-Men while they fought. He also has a sense of mercy, choosing to teleport the scientists out of the particle collider to let them escape instead of killing them. However, over the course of events, he slowly began to show a sinister and power-hungry side of himself, wanting to obtain full power to be seen as a genuine threat. Spot's motive boils down to his envious hatred towards Miles Morales, blaming him for turning him into a mutant, and actively seeking to one day kill Miles himself. This hatred culminates when he fully empowers himself with the collider in Earth-50101 (Mumbattan), openly declaring to Miles that he'll take everything from Miles just as he believes Miles took everything from him.
Biography[]
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse[]
Prior to his official introduction, the Spot was a scientist at Alchemax named Johnathon Ohnn, and was one of the many that worked with Kingpin on the Super-Collider project, under Olivia Octavius' supervision. He primarily used the Super-Collider to conduct experiments, but one of them involving a spider caused an alternate version from Earth-42 to replace it, which then led the spider to bite the New York youngster Miles Morales, granting him his powers. He was later seen during Miles and Peter's escape from Alchemax, where he was hit in the head with a bagel.
Johnathon was in the Collider Room when the Spider-Men destroyed the Super-Collider, and was carrying a container of dark matter. When Miles blew up the Collider, the dark matter had gotten out, and fused with Johnathon, mutating his skin to turn pure white, his face disappearing and portals of the dark matter appeared all over his body and his face. Due to his unnatural appearance causing him to be rejected and shunned by his co-workers and family, and the company he worked at being shut down, Johnathon decided to use his newfound abilities to steal money and lead a life of crime, as a villain named The Spot.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse[]
Spot is first seen attempting to rob an ATM at a local bodega, causing him to be attacked by the cashier, who he manages to defeat. Miles then arrives and gets in a fight with Spot, who proclaims himself Miles' nemesis, becoming infuriated when Miles relegates him to a villain of the week. Eventually returning to the remnants of the Super-Collider, Spot reveals his origins to Miles, who remains nonchalant towards their mutual relationship. Angered at this, Spot attempts to attack both Miles and Jefferson, spawning multiple holes around him, before accidentally kicking himself into one of his holes, resulting in himself being transported into the Spot Dimension. Upon entering it, he loses all of the holes covering his body but ends up traveling to alternate universes surrounding him. Accidentally returning to his own universe, Spot realizes the power his holes can grant him, and ventures to take revenge on Spider-Man.
Gathering materials and returning to his workshop apartment, Spot creates a miniature Super Collider, creating more holes that attach to his body, before finally sending him to another universe. Gradually becoming more empowered by harvesting the dark matter of other universes' Super Colliders, Spot eventually arrives at the city of Mumbattan (a hybrid of Mumbai and Manhattan) on Earth-50101 where he is confronted by Miles, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man India and Spider-Punk who have been tailing him. After a lengthy chase through the city, Spot reaches and activates the Alchemax Super Collider, despite the Spider-Men's attempts to stop him.
Embracing the dark energy of the Super Collider, Spot intentionally or unintentionally shows Miles a vision of his impending destruction of their mutual universe. Finally becoming a more unstable and dangerous entity, Spot swears he shall take everything away from Miles as Miles had done to him, before teleporting away, causing the area to collapse and forcing the rest of the Spider-Men to evacuate.
It is later revealed that part of Spot's plan involves the death of Miles' father Jefferson Davis, which is his canon event, leading to Miles escaping back to his own universe in order to go back after Spot and save his dad. However, Miles instead ends up landing on Earth-42 where he was captured by his own variant and that variant's uncle, while the Spot manages to arrive back at his and Miles' world, with the intention of resuming his plans.

- Mutated Physiology: Thanks to the Super Collider explosion, Johnathon Ohnn's body was heavily altered, his body becoming white with black spots on his body. Not only has his appearance changed, but he received a number of abilities, which only grew as he gained more power by absorbing the dark matter from Super Colliders in other universes. As of now the following abilities are:
- Portal Creation: The Spot's primary power is his ability to use the spots on his body to create portals of dark matter that he can use to teleport himself and other people or objects to wherever he desires, either by physically removing or popping the spots off his body. He can also cut, remove chunks of, and seemingly levitate objects and matter using his portals, as well as use his portals to swiftly punch and kick at a distance. He initially didn't have much control over these portals, not being able to control where the portal lead to most of the time and even unintentionally creating portals. However, as he acquired more power and learned how to better control and utilize his powers more effectively, Spot became much more formidable, now shown to use his portals and his own momentum to both travel faster and attack his opponents before they could react, seamlessly teleport his pursuers into walls and each other, and even move his portals using body movements like arm swipes.
- Dimensional Travel: The Spot can travel to any dimension in the multiverse by opening a portal to the Spotted Dimension then traveling through one of the many portals in that dimension.
- Dark Matter Discs: The Spot can use his portals as ranged weapons by creating small portals in his hands or pulling them from his body then throwing them at his intended target as disc-like projectiles.
- Attack Redirection: The Spot can use the portals on his body to redirect attacks back at his opponents, as shown when he uses them to redirect Miles attacks right back at him, though Miles quickly learned how to use this against him.
- Superhuman Strength: The Spot also appears to have gained a boost in physical strength, being strong enough to crush a metal sign with his bare hands, hold up 2 Spider-Men by their necks with little effort, and even hold back and harm Miles, who himself possess both super strength and durability.
- Superhuman Speed and Reflexes: The Spot is also shown to have gained above average speed and reaction time, seen being able to punch and kick through his portals at speeds no normal human could achieve and later seen reacting to 3 incoming Spider-Men and teleporting them away before they could reach him.
- Disintegration: The Spot appears to be capable of disintegrating objects, or at least making them disappear, as he angrily used his dark matter to make the metal sign he was crushing seemingly vanish.
- Dark Matter Blast: As he grew more powerful, he gained new abilities as a result, such as being able to blast away anyone caught in a large enough spot with great force, using the dark matter from that spot to do so.

- Teleportation: The empowered Spot is capable of teleporting to wherever he wants without the use of his portals to do so, though he presumably cannot teleport to other universes without entering the Spotted Dimension first via his portals.
- Levitation: The Spot, in his empowered form, has become capable of floating off the ground, as shown in the ending scene of ATSV where he levitates high above New York City shortly after arriving back in his native universe.
- Matter Absorption: According to the vision Spot and Miles received, the Spot is seemingly now capable of sucking in and absorbing his surroundings into himself like a black hole, being able to fire out whatever he absorbed via his portals afterwards.

- Scientific Expertise: This has proved to be why Spot became a dangerous adversary to Miles is his knowledge of great lengths of many fields of science including quantum Physics, which is how he was able to construct a machine which brought back his spots when Gwen scanned his apartment, it also garnered the interest of Olivia Octavius who was intrigued over his work due to bringing a spider from another alternate reality which led to Miles becoming a superhero.

Trivia[]
- His name, Johnathon Ohnn, is a stealth pun referencing the phrase "Johnny on the spot," which refers to a person who is always ready. This is ironic given his unprofessionalism and clumsiness in the first half of the Across the Spider-Verse.
- Jason Schwartzman's cousin Nicolas Cage also participated in the Spider-Verse trilogy as the voice of Spider-Man Noir.
- The Spot initially wasn't planned to be the main antagonist of Across the Spider-Verse. Longtime Spider-Man producer Avi Arad suggested the character be used for the film and the idea was dismissed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller until they looked into his powers.
- Funnily enough, this has led fans to joke that by suggesting the Spot as the film's villain, Arad has finally "redeemed" himself for the "villain failure" of Spider-Man 3, as Arad's suggestion for that film to use Venom as the main villain resulted in that version of Venom to be negatively received by fans and that film to be criticized for having "too many" villains.
- Spot being treated as a joke, in the beginning, is likely referencing how he was viewed as such by many authors and fans.
- Spot's backstory, specifically the scene where Miles chucks a bagel at him, has been dubbed "the Bagel Effect" by many audiences due to how such a ridiculous moment led to him becoming a dangerous villain.
- When empowered, Spot bears a great resemblance to Miles's silhouette in his "Great Expectations" graffiti, which would be representative of him becoming part of Miles's journey to truly becoming Spider-Man, possibly by bringing about his canon event.
- The scene in which the Spot claims that Miles created him, confusing both Miles and his father Jefferson has become a popular exploitable Internet meme, with Spot and Jefferson's dialogues being replaced with other absurd speeches or the scene being dubbed over other characters.

- The Spot serves as a dark parallel to Miles:

The Spot, on the other hand, is incredibly petty and upset about being made fun of and viewed unfairly, to the point where this fuels his desire to destroy the universes of every Spider-Person ever, and even believes Miles' role in destroying the collider is what led to his new form. If Miles had a vindictive and petty nature against those who viewed him unfairly, he would end up becoming like the Spot.
