question about the translations...

[edit source]

Sorry, but I don't understand why there are "English translations" for articles, there is an English Wikipedia already... !

IMHO this is a total waste of time due to redundant work, the articles get interwikilinks and if one would like to read about a topic in English, he would go to http://en.wikipedia.org not to.wikipedia.org, and even if one would argument that that this wiki wants to have exact translations of their articles to English, I would say, that is not possible, since they will change and the translation not. Also why English, why not another language?

Please note, that is only my personal opinion, if the community think that is good, it is their decision.

An English translation is only provided to some pages which may be for interest for non Tongan speakers. Either some main navigation pages, like this one, to avoid getting lost; or articles about Tonga or Tongan culture, which would probably too specialistic to justify inclusion in any other wikipedia. Furthermore English is the second language of Tonga. That is my reason. --Tauʻolunga 07:50, 15 Fēpueli 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the answer, no harm meant of course, I understand Your reasons, however my opinion is still that English articles should be created in the English Wikipedia, also those about Tonga and Tongan culture, which would be very interesting! But I respect Your position and wish You all the best in this project. Please could You tell me if "manu" is the correct translation for "bird" I would add that into Wiktionary :) Best regards, --manu (:> )=| 03:08, 16 Fēpueli 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is not that easy. The short answer is yes, the long answer is that traditionally 'manu' is every animal living on land (thus exclusing fish, shellfish, worms), which is unnamed. That is: it has no species name of itself, because it is not important to humans. So pig, rat, chicken, dog, turtle, louse, ... are named, and all the rest is manu. Considering the paucity of species in the Pacific, most of these manu are birds indeed. But to be more specific in Tonga the term manupuna (flying animal) is used, while in modern use monumanu is animal. Finally use manuvaha for space animal (bird). --Tauʻolunga 05:50, 16 Fēpueli 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Kind thanks, I have added these translations to the English and Icelandic Wiktionary, if You ever need any technical assistance or have questions (I can maybe answer), let me know :) --manuvaha (:> )=| 05:57, 16 Fēpueli 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Small request

[edit source]

Hello! I am a Polish wikipedian and I would like to ask you for your help - writing a new article about former Polish President who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 – Lech Wałęsa. I have looked for his biography in your Wikipedia but without success. Polish Wikipedians will be grateful for your help. Thank you so much in advance! PS you can find the English version of the article here. Best wishes from Poland, Patrol110 09:19, 13 Nōvema 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photographs

[edit source]

How can I use some excellent photographs from Tongan Wikipedia in the English version? A good example would be Solomone Ula Ata. Sorry I don't know how to sign my name here but I will check back for ant reply. Castlemate Everything is free in wikipedia, take whatever you want. Transfer them to commons if you wish. --Tauʻolunga (talk) 07:26, 8 Mē 2014 (UTC)[reply]
