The Impulse series, situated within the Stationary Weapons class, are a series of directional anti-personnel mines in Earth Defense Force 2025 and Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair. They are used exclusively by the Air Raider class.
Description[]
The Impulse series are Claymore-like mines which can be set on the ground and detonate when an enemy moves close to them, releasing a spray of projectiles that function similarly to the flechettes of the Air Raider's Limpet Splendor series. Their detection range is described by four laser beams emitted from their front.
Like most other placed objects, they can also be set on vehicles and will adhere to them and move where they move. While dangerous, this can be used to give a vehicle an ersatz short-range defense system.
Strategy[]
Impulse mines specifically detect the "origin bone" of the enemy's 3D model (the same place the lock-on cursor appears). While this is not a problem for standard enemies, larger enemies such as Hectors generally will not detonate a standard Impulse mine no matter how close they are to it. The mine also only seems to check for detonation if an enemy enters its detection range: deploying a mine too close to an enemy can lead to it failing to detonate unless the enemy exits and re-enters the detection range.
