Maastricht ([maːˈstʁɪçt] (soothren Dutch an locally) or [maːˈstɾɪxt] ( listen) (northren Dutch); Limburgish (incl. Maastrichtian): Mestreech [məˈstʁeːç]; French: Maestricht (archaic); Spaingie: Mastrique (archaic)) is the caipital ceety o the Dutch province o Limburg. It is located on baith sides o the Meuse river (Dutch: Maas), at the pynt whaur the Jeker River (French: Geer) joins it.

Maastricht developed frae a Roman settlement tae a releegious centre, a garrison ceity an an early industrial ceity.[1] Nowadays, it is kent as a ceity o history, cultur, local folklore an eddication,[2] an haes the seicont heichest amoont o naitional heritage steids (Rijksmonumenten) in the Netherlands efter Amsterdam, nummerin 1677. Furthermair, it haes acome kent, bi wye o the Maastricht Treaty, as the birthplace o the European Union, European citizenship, an the single European currency, the euro.[3][4] The toun is popular wi tourists for shoppin an recreation, an haes a lairge growin internaitional student population. Maastricht is a member o the Maist Auncient European Touns Network[5] an is pairt o the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion, which includes nearby ceities Aachen, Eupen, Hasselt, Liège an Tongeren.
