PLATE PROOF WITH IMAGE OF WILLIAM H. SEWARD, 1873-1878. Official stamps printed for executive departments bear images of famous Americans. The stamps pre-paid the department's postage. Seward was secretary of state under Lincoln and Johnson.
On the night of Lincoln's assassination, Secretary Seward was attacked and nearly killed. While Johnson's secretary of state, he negotiated the purchase of Alaska.
