Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire (original working title Project Louisiana[5][6][7]) is a party-based role-playing video game created by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Versus Evil[8]. It is the sequel to the original Pillars of Eternity, and draws inspiration from Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale II, and Planescape: Torment). The game was successfully crowdfunded via a Fig campaign, raising a total of $4,545,395 from 33,614 backers and private investors.
The game was released on May 8, 2018[1] for Windows, Linux and macOS, and is currently available on Steam[9], GOG[10], Humble Bundle[11], Origin[12], and the Mac App Store[13]. On January 28, 2020 it was released to console platforms PlayStation 4[14] and Xbox One[15][2]. Titled Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - Ultimate Edition, the console version includes all expansions, updates and free DLC.[16] It is available both digitally (via the associated store fronts) and physically, through a partnership with publisher THQ Nordic.[17][2] The Nintendo Switch version was ultimately canceled on February 27th, 2022.[18]
Gameplay[ | ]
The game follows the events of Pillars of Eternity with the same main player-designed character. The game play location changes to the Deadfire Archipelago of the world of Eora. Players travel the far-flung region of the titular Deadfire Archipelago by ship, where they will discover new races, visit exotic islands, defend their ships against pirates, and, most importantly, choose their allies carefully, as there are powerful factions to encounter at nearly every port.
See the Pillars of Eternity gameplay article for an overview of the returning style of gameplay and its companion article for new elements.
Plot[ | ]
Deadfire is a direct sequel to Pillars of Eternity, taking place in the world of Eora. As with the first game, the player assumes the role of a "Watcher", a character with the ability to look into other people's souls and read their memories, as well as the ones of their past lives.
The story begins five years after the events of the first game. Eothas, the god of light and rebirth who was believed dead, awakens under the player's stronghold Caed Nua from the first game. Eothas' awakening is extremely violent, and he destroys Caed Nua, while he drains the souls of the people in the surrounding area. The Watcher similarly has a piece of their soul torn out during the attack, but manages to barely cling to life. In this near-dead state, they are contacted by Berath, the god of death, who offers to restore their soul in exchange for agreeing to become Berath's herald and take on the task of pursuing Eothas to discover what he is planning. The hunt for Eothas takes the Watcher (and their crew) via ship to the Deadfire Archipelago, where they must try to seek out answers—answers which could throw mortals and the gods themselves into chaos. The player's actions and decisions in the first game influence certain storyline elements of Deadfire.
Throughout the story, the Watcher meets four different factions all vying for control over the Deadfire area: the imperialistic Royal Deadfire Company, acting on behalf of the expansionist Rauatai empire; the more profit-oriented and mercantile Vailian Trading Company, acting on behalf of the Vailian Republics; the traditionalist Huana, a tribal alliance of natives seeking to uphold their people's independence; and the Príncipi sen Patrena, a federation of pirates seeking to establish a republic of their own. The Watcher can help or hinder these factions along the way. Through their pursuit of Eothas, the Watcher eventually discovers the god's true intentions: he aims to break the Wheel, the cycle of reincarnation that governs the souls of Eora and by extension feeds the gods with the energy they need to sustain themselves, hoping that in doing so he can break the other gods' control over all mortal beings, allowing them to be free to pursue their own destinies. To that end, he seeks the mythical lost city of Ukaizo, where the mechanism controlling the Wheel is housed. Though the other gods intervene several times in an attempt to stop Eothas, he is undeterred and continues towards his goal.
By either swearing fealty to one of the factions and gaining their help or acting independently, the Watcher and their ship braves the stormy sea of Ondra's Mortar, which protects the city of Ukaizo, just as Eothas makes his final approach to the Wheel, and confronts him there. Eothas, though sympathetic to the Watcher, refuses to back down from his endeavor, explaining to the Watcher that destroying the Wheel would most likely kill him and the rest of the gods for good, but that his death will also give him the power to enact a great change upon all of Eora. Before destroying the Wheel, he returns the piece of the Watcher's soul he took from them, thereby freeing them from their debt to Berath, and asks for their advice on what that change should be. An epilogue then follows, detailing the effects the Watcher's choices had on their companions, the different factions, the Deadfire, and the world at large. In the end, the Watcher resolves to head home to the Dyrwood, uncertain of what the future now holds for both gods and mortals.

Release[ | ]
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire was released on May 8, 2018 (exactly 1 year, 2 months and 13 days from the completion of the Fig campaign) on Windows, Linux and macOS, via Steam, GOG, Origin and the Mac App Store.
Brazilian developer and Versus Evil subsidiary Red Cerberus and Czech developer Grip Digital were sub-contracted to develop a port to console platforms Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.[30][31][32] The port would address adapting Pillars' traditionally mouse-based UI to work for touch and gamepad-based input, and would include a number of performance optimizations for the hardware. While the project was originally scheduled for completion in Q4 2018, it saw a number of significant delays.
Upon the release of The Forgotten Sanctum in December 2018, Obsidian announced that the game would ship to consoles some time in 2019.[16][33] However this was eventually pushed back on December 9, 2019, when publisher Versus Evil announced[17] that the game would finally be coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on January 28, 2020, with the Nintendo Switch version following "later in the year."[2] This comes almost 2 years after the original PC release.
The game was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 28, 2020.[2] Titled Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - Ultimate Edition, it includes all three expansions to the base game. The console version was distributed digitally via the Microsoft Store and PlayStation Store, and physically through a partnership with publisher THQ Nordic.[34] The physical release comes in the form of a "Standard Edition" and an "Ultimate Collector's Edition", which bundles in a number of physical bonuses.[35]
The Nintendo Switch version was officially confirmed as cancelled by Versus Evil on February 27, 2022.[18] This follows news from a year earlier when Versus Evil ceased releasing patches for the Switch version of Pillars of Eternity, despite unresolved issues.[36] Versus Evil cited the Switch's system limitations.[3]
Dublin-based Black Shamrock, a subsidiary of Virtuos, was contracted to port Deadfire from Unity 2017 to Unity 2020 for the game's upcoming release on Xbox Game Pass on February 18, 2021.[37][4]
Editions[ | ]
On PC, Mac and Linux, three different editions of the game are available for purchase — Digital Standard, Deluxe, and Obsidian editions. These editions are only available on Steam and GOG, and provide additional digital and in-game content on top of the base game. The expansions, season pass, and the Explorer's Pack can also be purchased individually.
On consoles, the release is consolidated to a single "Ultimate Edition", including the base game, free updates, and its expansions up to patch 5.0, but no digital bonus content. Notably it does not include content from Explorer's Pack and The Captain's Footlocker. The console release also includes a "Ultimate Collector's Edition", which contains a few physical bonuses that were previously only available during the crowdfunding campaign.

Sequel[ | ]
Josh Sawyer, lead designer for Deadfire, said that the possibility of a sequel to Deadfire was uncertain due to its relatively low sales compared to the first game, despite it being reviewed generally positively by players and critics alike. After discussing the potential reasons for its performance, Sawyer said that he would be reluctant to lead a sequel without a clear understanding of the issues and what it would take to remedy them in order to meet the audience's expectations.[61] In 2023, Sawyer felt that both Pillars of Eternity games were his most compromised works due to crowdfunding backers' demands for conservative game design instead of implementing his new ideas.[62] Later, he emphasized that a sequel should be made with confidence in its appeal, internal enthusiasm from the development team, and not dependence on external validation or fan persuasion.[63]
Microsoft's acquisition of Obsidian Entertainment (and a number of other studios, including inXile Entertainment) in 2019 provided the studio with greater funding and resources, potentially making a sequel to Deadfire more feasible, given the franchise's relatively niche appeal and Microsoft's interest in developing more first-party titles. Aaron Greenberg, the general manager of marketing at Xbox, said in an interview to "expect sequels" from their studios, and that at Obsidian "there's the team working on The Outer Worlds, a team that's working on Pillars, and a team working on another secret thing". At the time of the interview in September, 2019, work on new content for the game had ceased over four months prior. However, the release of the console ports of Pillars I and II (in August 2019 and December 2020 respectively) meant that the Pillars team was likely still providing support for its development, instead of working on a potential sequel as some fans theorized.[64]
In an interview with Touch Arcade, when asked "what project he would work on if he had unlimited resources and no time constraint", Josh Sawyer said he would consider making a Pillars of Eternity 3, mentioning the significant budget of Baldur's Gate 3 compared to Deadfire. He believed it would be fun to create a high-production fantasy RPG with a party-based system, possibly leaning more towards turn-based combat rather than the real-time with pause system that Pillars I and II was designed with, envisioning smaller, more tactical encounters and cinematic elements.[65] Later in a Q&A on his YouTube channel, Sawyer expressed that he'd like to take some cues from the way the game handled movement, jumping, flying, and the general navigation of terrain more than just walking around. In addition, he enjoyed the dynamism of the world, and the interactive approach to objects in-game, how things can have properties like wet or burning, and how they can be moved around or broken. He cited the difficulty of doing such things in Pillars and Deadfire and the inherent limitations of a mostly-2D world.[66]
Avowed, a first-person spin-off to the Pillars of Eternity franchise, was announced in July 2020. It is set in the same universe, and features some returning characters from Pillars, but otherwise is not a continuation of the story of the Watcher in Dyrwood and the Deadfire.
Currently, Obsidian has made no official announcements regarding a direct sequel.

- ↑ Versus Evil [@vs_evil] (February 10, 2021). "For all of those who dove into the world of Eora with Pillars of Eternity on Nintendo Switch, we want to thank you! All of the feedback that you have given has allowed us to continually make the game better so you can play it wherever you go. It has been a massive undertaking to get us to this point. We have, unfortunately, reached a limit on what we can do with our updates to the game and have exhausted the options left to us from the PC original in regards to the limitations of the hardware we are working with. We do understand that this will leave issues present that have been reported to us, such as the Ranger pet not appearing, but at this time we are unable to patch the game further. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause and hope that you continue to enjoy building your story in Pillars of Eternity." (Tweet) via Twitter.
