The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an overrated 2023 computer-animated fantasy adventure comedy film based on the video game series Super Mario published by Nintendo. Co-financed by Universal Pictures (which is also the distributor) and Nintendo and produced by Illumination, it is the third feature film adaptation of the Super Mario video game series, following the Japanese anime film Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! (1986) and the American live-action film Super Mario Bros. (1993). The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (in Jelenic's feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. The film's ensemble voice cast features Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario, and also includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, Charles Martinet, and Kevin Michael Richardson. The film features an origin story for the brothers Mario and Luigi, Italian-American plumbers who are transported to an alternate world and become entangled in a battle between the Mushroom Kingdom, led by Princess Peach, and the Koopas, led by Bowser.

After the critical and commercial failure of the 1993 film, Nintendo was reluctant to license its intellectual properties for film adaptations. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto became interested in developing another film when Nintendo was bringing its older games to the Virtual Console service, and through Nintendo's work with Universal Parks & Resorts to create Super Nintendo World, he met Illumination founder Chris Meledandri. By 2016, the two were discussing a Mario film and in January 2018, Nintendo announced that it would collaborate with Illumination and Universal to produce it. Production was underway by 2020 and the cast was announced in September 2021. A teaser trailer for the film and the first official trailer were shown via Nintendo Direct presentations on October 6, 2022 and November 29, 2022 respectively.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released in the United States on April 5, 2023, and in Japan on April 28. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but a more positive response from audiences. It has grossed over $876.4 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2023 so far and setting box-office records for the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated film and the highest-grossing film based on a video game.

Plot[]

The film opens with a brief scene where Bowser invades the Snow Kingdom, captures its penguin inhabitants, burns their palace to the ground, and steals a powerful Super Star. This cuts immediately to an origin story where Mario and Luigi are introduced as plumbers in New York City who have recently started their own plumbing service, Super Mario Bros. Plumbing, a struggling small business servicing Brooklyn and the neighboring borough of Queens. Despite their confidence and teamwork they have been told constanltly they are not good enough and are made fun of. The two brothers stick together no matter what happens to them.

Spoiler Warning: The following contains important plot details of the entire film.

The family disapproves of the Mario brothers' decision to leave their steady job to start the business, with only Mario's mother approving of his decision. Their antagonistic former boss, Spike, also derides Mario for making this choice. After a slapstick scene in which one of their plumbing jobs becomes a disaster due to being disrupted by a violent dog, Mario and Luigi see a significant manhole leak reported on the news. They go into the sewer to fix the plumbing, but are both sucked into a pipe and separated in the process.

Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom and meets Toad, who informs him that Luigi has ended up in the "dark lands", under the control of Bowser, who wants to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom and marry Princess Peach. Toad takes Mario to Peach, while Luigi is chased by Bowser's forces and tries to escape, but ends up being captured.

At Peach's castle, Peach reveals her plan to recruit the Jungle Kingdom to help against Bowser, and agrees to take Mario along after he eventually almost completes an obstacle course, with Toad coming as well. Meanwhile, Bowser expresses through song his obsession with the princess, revealing that he wants to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom only because he desires to marry her; then he has Luigi brought before him, interrogates him on Mario's whereabouts, and orders his Shy Guy guards to imprison him. Luigi is caged above a sea of lava, where others, such as Lumalee and the penguins, have also been imprisoned by the Koopa Troop.

Mario, Peach, and Toad are then seen journeying through an abundance of locales, such as the Desert Area, Bob-omb Battlefield, the Waterfall Area, and even a paradise full of Yoshis. Along the way, Peach explains to Mario about the abundance of ? Blocks in the worlds they are exploring, saying that they are filled with all kinds of items that can give him the upper hand against potential oppressors.

As the trio sets camp in a field of Fire Flowers, Peach shares that she does not know the full extent of her origins, having been taken in by the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom as a baby and eventually being crowned their princess; Mario speculates that she may be from the same world he is.

At the Jungle Kingdom, King Cranky Kong agrees to help on the condition that Mario defeats his son, Donkey Kong, in a fight. The fight goes off to a shaky start at first, but after remembering what Peach said about power-ups, Mario uses one of the boxes to get a Super Bell and transform into Cat Mario. He then goes on to dodge Donkey Kong's barrels, chase him around wielding a hammer, and scratch him until the ape is ultimately defeated.

Mario, Peach, Toad, and the Kongs use karts to drive to Bowser, but they are ambushed by his army on Rainbow Road. When a part of the road is destroyed, Mario and Donkey Kong plummet to the ocean and are consumed by a Maw-Ray, and the other Kongs are captured. Peach and Toad drive back to the Mushroom Kingdom and urge the citizens to evacuate. Peach then says that she will marry Bowser to stop Toad from being tortured. Meanwhile, Mario and Donkey Kong escape the Maw-Ray through the rocket from Donkey Kong's kart, and go to Bowser. In the process, Mario exploits multiple power-ups including the Super Mushroom and the Super Leaf, and DK also makes use of power-ups himself, such as the Fire Flower.

At the wedding reception, where Bowser intends to execute all his prisoners publicly by burning them in lava, Toad smuggles in an Ice Flowerand gives it to Peach, who freezes Bowser, while Luigi is freed along with the other prisoners, meaning that the brothers are now reunited. Toad and Donkey Kong help to fight off the invading Koopas, while Mario diverts a Banzai Bill away from Peach's Castle and into the pipe that sent him to the Mushroom Kingdom. However, this causes elements from the Mushroom Kingdom to be transported back to Brooklyn, where Mario and Luigi obtain a glowing Super Star and use its invincibility to work together to defeat the freed Bowser, who is subsequently shrunk with a Mini Mushroom and placed in a bottle. In the end, the residents of Brooklyn celebrate the victorious Mario brothers, including Spike and Mario's father, the latter of whom saying that he is proud of him.

In a mid-credits scene, the still-shrunken Bowser plays a song (Peaches), only to be hit by a guard.

In a post-credits scene, a white egg with green spots hatches, upon which Yoshi is heard.

Spoiler Warning: All spoilers have been stated and have ended here.

After the critical and commercial failure of the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film adaptation, Japanese video game company Nintendo became wary of licensing its properties for film adaptations.[8] According to Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, the idea for a new Mario film came from bringing their older games to the Virtual Console and other services; such transitions took time for the company, and Miyamoto recognized that "our content business would be able to develop even further if we were able to combine our long-beloved software with that of video assets, and utilize them together for extended periods."[9] Miyamoto knew that the process of making a film was far different from that of making a video game, and wanted a film expert to lead the effort.[10]

Following the November 2014 hack of Sony Pictures, emails between producer Avi Arad, studio chief Amy Pascal, TriStar Pictures head Tom Rothman, and Sony Pictures Animation president of production Michelle Raimo Kouyate were released revealing that Sony had been attempting to secure the film rights to the Mario franchise for several years. Arad visited Nintendo in Tokyo in February and July 2014 in an attempt to secure a deal. In October, Arad emailed Pascal and said he had closed the deal with Nintendo. Pascal suggested recruiting Sony Pictures Animation's Hotel Transylvania director Genndy Tartakovsky to help develop the project, while Kouyate said she could "think of 3–4 movies right out of the gate" and expressed hope in "build[ing] a Mario empire."[8] However, after the emails leaked, Arad denied that a deal had been made, stating that negotiations had only begun. BuzzFeed News noted that the emails did not take into account potential conflicts with Sony Pictures' corporate sibling Sony Interactive Entertainment, one of Nintendo's chief competitors.[8]

Through Nintendo's work with Universal Parks & Resorts to create Mario-based attractions, later resulting in Super Nintendo World, Miyamoto met Chris Meledandri, founder of Universal Pictures' Illumination animation division. Miyamoto found Meledandri's creative process similar to his own and felt he would be the proper lead for a Mario film. They had started more earnest discussions by 2016, knowing that if they felt it would not work that they could easily walk away.[10] In November 2017, reports emerged that Nintendo was collaborating with Universal and Illumination to make an animated Mario film.[11] Then-Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima clarified that a deal had not been finalized, but that an announcement would come soon. Kimishima hoped that if the deal was successful, a 2020 release date would be possible.[12]

In January 2018, Nintendo announced that the film would progress with Miyamoto and Meledandri co-producing.[13] Meledandri said the film was a "priority" for Illumination and that it will most likely come out in 2022. He added that Miyamoto would be "front and center" during production.[14] In January 2020, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa stated that the film was "moving along smoothly" with an expected 2022 release date. Furukawa also said Nintendo would own the rights to the film, and both Nintendo and Universal would fund the production.[15]

In August 2021, it emerged that Teen Titans Go! creators Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic were directing the film after the discovery of an Illumination animator's LinkedIn profile that included the film in their list.[16] Following the full casting announcement, Horvath and Jelenic were confirmed to be directing, with Matthew Fogel attached as the screenwriter after previously scribing Illumination's Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022).[17] According to Khary Payton, who has collaborated with Horvath and Jelenic on various projects at Warner Bros. Animation, the duo flew to Illumination Studios Paris a month after the release of their first feature film, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies in September 2018.[18]

In September 2022, it was announced by New York Comic Con that the film's teaser trailer would be released on October 6, 2022.[19] Shortly thereafter, Ed Skudder confirmed that he worked as head of story on the film.[20] In October 2022, the film's title was revealed as The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Casting[]

In February 2021, Mario voice actor ] confirmed that he said the possibility of reprising his role in the film would be a "marvelous thing" and that if he were asked to voice Mario, "I'll go in and play with great joy and happiness." to get a look at the fun we’ve been cooking up !|access-date=September 23, 2022}}</ref> In October 2022, the film's title was revealed as The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

During a September 2021 Nintendo Direct presentation, Shigeru Miyamoto announced that Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Kevin Michael Richardson, Fred Armisen, and Maniscalco would headline the voice cast, and that Martinet would be featured in "surprise cameos".[1] This announcement was met with a mixed reaction from fans; while some welcomed the idea of celebrity actors voicing the characters, others questioned and criticized the choices, in particular Pratt as Mario instead of Martinet (who has voiced the character since 1992) or an Italian actor.[21] Meledandri said Pratt would not be voicing Mario with a thick Italian accent as Martinet has traditionally done.[22]

Plot details were kept secret from the actors during recording, according to Day, who noted he had to record his dialogue in many different ways, after which the directors selected the version they believed would be best suited for the scene.[23] Upon the trailer's release, voice actors Khary Payton and Eric Bauza confirmed their parts in the film. Payton voices the Penguin King and Bauza voices several characters. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Payton recorded his lines in a closet at his home, though he was uncertain if he would appear in the final edit. He expressed his enthusiasm at being invited to join the film, and also defended Pratt's performance as Mario, describing the voice as being a "cousin to the Sopranos".[24] Conversely, Payton's Teen Titans co-star and voice actress Tara Strong, criticized Pratt's casting and expressed preference for Martinet to voice Mario instead.[25] Martinet himself spoke positively of the film, saying "I think it's gonna be a lot of fun".[26]

Animation[]

The film is being animated by Illumination Studios Paris, which has animated many of Illumination's previous films, in Paris, France.[27] Production was underway by September 2020.[28][29]

Music[]

During the Nintendo Direct presentation, Meledandri confirmed that Brian Tyler is set to compose the score for the film. Tyler is working closely with longtime Mario composer Koji Kondo to incorporate themes from the games within the film's score.[30] Songs from Jack Black and Keegan-Michael Key were improvised for the film.[31]

Marketing[]

In a September 2021 Nintendo Direct, the film's visuals were teased in a poster depicting a "? Block" on a black background alongside the film's cast.[1] Another teaser poster was posted on the film's Twitter account on October 4, 2022, featuring a town-like area with Mario's backside, an assortment of Toads, a Cheep Cheep, Biddybuds, and Princess Peach's castle on a hill, overlooking the setting.[32] Additionally, a Nintendo Direct presentation dedicated to the film featuring the first teaser trailer was announced to be livestreamed on October 6, 2022;[33] the trailer would also be screened at New York Comic Con 2022 on the same day.[34] Upon the release of the teaser poster, Chris Pratt promoted the film on Twitter.[35] Public reception to the poster was largely positive; praise was directed towards the faithfulness of the environment and visuals to the usual aesthetic of the series, though many jokingly lamented the apparent reduction of the size of Mario's rear.[36][37][38][39][40]

On October 5, an image was posted on Twitter featuring a new render of Mario's face and upper body, closely resembling his appearance in the poster revealed the previous day. The image came from a McDonald's calendar. While reactions were generally positive, online discourse centered around small alterations to Mario's face, with many describing the slightly realistic design as initially off-putting, evoking comparisons to Sonic's original film design in the 2019 Sonic the Hedgehog trailers.[41][42][43][44] Additionally, a full image of the calendar was leaked, revealing renders of Peach and Toad. The image of Mario has since been taken down.

The Super Mario Bros

The film's title was revealed in the trailer.

On October 6, the teaser trailer was released live in a Nintendo Direct presentation that included various other details about the film. The teaser shows Bowser and Kamek attacking a kingdom of penguins and finding the Power Star, Mario arriving at the Mushroom Kingdom and meeting Toad for the first time, and Luigi running from a horde of Dry Bones at the end.[45] The leaks were later confirmed with the release of the trailer.[46] At a short QnA following the trailer reveal at New York Comic Con, Jack Black stated that "Bowser has a musical side" in the film, teasing a theme for the character.[47] The teaser trailer received over three million views in 24 hours.[48]

Reactions to the teaser trailer were lukewarm: viewers and journalists generally praised the visuals and tone, as well as Black and Key's respective performances as Bowser and Toad. However, Pratt's performance as Mario was the subject of criticism, described as sounding disinterested and too similar to his normal speaking voice.[49][50] Vic Hood from TechRadar noted a slight New York accent in Mario's lines, calling it a possible throwback to Mario's depictions before Charles Martinet became the character's sole voice actor.[51] The Guardian again likened the response to Pratt's voice to the backlash against the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer.[52]

On November 28, Nintendo announced that the second film trailer would be released the next day in a Nintendo Direct. Another teaser poster was released, depicting the empty throne room of Princess Peach's castle.[53] Additionally, promotional posters depicting various characters, along with a plot synopsis were also reportedly leaked.[54][55][56]

On November 29, the second trailer was shown in the Nintendo Direct. The trailer shows Mario losing a fight against Donkey Kong in an arena filled with other Kongs; Princess Peach rallying the people of the Mushroom Kingdom for war with Bowser, who is seen having kidnapped Luigi; Mario training on an obstacle course resembling a typical Super Mario game level; and several characters driving go-karts.

Reactions to the new trailer were largely positive, with praise for the references to previous games, the designs, and faithfulness to the franchise, along with the voice performances including the voice of Day as Luigi.[57] Pratt's performance as Mario was still criticized, although his interjections of "Let's-a go" and "Wahoo!", two catchphrases from the games, were well-received for sounding closer to Martinet's portrayal.[58] Character posters were also released that day, featuring Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Donkey Kong, and Bowser.[59][60][61][62]

The French dubs of both trailers were enthusiastically received by English-speaking viewers, with Mario's dub, provided by Pierre Tessier, earning particular praise for its similarity to Martinet's portrayal; some viewers declared their intent to watch the film in French as a result.[63][64]

On December 9, the first clip of the film, showing Toad guiding Mario through the Mushroom Kingdom and to the entrance to Peach's Castle, was revealed at The Game Awards 2022. The Verge's Ash Parrish commented, "Despite the skepticism surrounding Chris Pratt's performance as Mario, the movie's visuals — and I cannot stress enough, only the visuals — look incredible".

On January 29, 2023, a preview clip of the film was released during the NFC Championship Game. Some entertainment news sites pointed out the addition of Rogen's "iconic laugh" heard as Donkey Kong in the clip. Emma Roth from The Verge commented, "I'm pleasantly surprised at how well his voice (and laugh) suits the character" while Luke Plunkett from Kotaku commented, "Seth Rogen has been hired to... just be Seth Rogen".

On February 12, 2023, a commercial for the film was released during Super Bowl LVII, featuring a rendition of the title theme from The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. A corresponding website which was featured in the trailer was also released, which advertises the Super Mario Bros. plumbing service from the film as if it were, according to Plunkett, "...a struggling small business servicing the Brooklyn and Queens areas".

It was also expected to gross around $100 million internationally.[78] After making $31.7 million on its first day and $26.5 million on its second, five-day estimates were raised to $141 million. Projections were re-adjusted yet again to $191 million after the film made $55 million on Friday. The film went on to debut to $146.4 million during the traditional three-day weekend and $204.6 million over the five-day frame,[79] surpassing the $72.1 million opening of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to become the top opening weekend for a video game adaptation, as well as surpassing its $190.8 million lifetime gross to become the top grossing video game adaptation ever.[80] It was the third-highest Easter opening weekend of all time, behind Furious 7 and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.[81] The film not only surpassed Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen for the biggest five-day Wednesday opening of any film, but also surpassed Minions for Illumination's largest opening weekend ever.[82] Additionally, the film surpassed Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania for 2023's biggest opening weekend.[83] Overall, The Super Mario Bros. Movie generated the third-highest domestic opening weekend for any animated film, after The Lion King and Incredibles 2.[84] It over-performed in other territories, making $173 million for a global opening weekend of $377.2 million, surpassing Frozen II's record.[81] Furthermore, it surpassed Warcraft to have the highest worldwide opening weekend for any video game adaptation.[79] It also became the highest-grossing film based on a video game after just one week of release. Critical response[]

The film has divided critics. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 59% of 246 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 5.7/10. The website's consensus reads: "While it's nowhere near as thrilling as turtle tipping your way to 128 lives, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a colorful – albeit thinly plotted – animated adventure that has about as many Nintendos as Nintendon'ts." Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 46 out of 100, based on 52 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".

Audience response[]

In contrast, the audience response was significantly more positive; the film garnered a positive audience score of 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.[85][86][87][88] Audiences surveyed by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale, while 94% of those polled by PostTrak gave it a positive score, with 82% saying that they would recommend it.[81]

Future[]

Possible sequel[]

In May 2021, Furukawa said that Nintendo was interested in producing more animated films based on its intellectual properties if the Mario Bros. film is successful.

In a Variety cover story before the film's release, producer Meledandri was asked about potential sequels, or projects adapted from other Nintendo properties, and answered, "Our focus right now is entirely on bringing the film out to the audience, and at this time, we're not prepared to talk about what's coming in the future". The film's post-credits scene hints at a potential sequel featuring Yoshi. Black has also stated his interest in a potential sequel featuring Pedro Pascal (who had previously played Mario in a Saturday Night Live sketch) voicing the character Wario, who could serve as the film's main villain.

On April 21, 2023, following the film's box office success, Nintendo stated that there would be more films based on their properties, though they did not directly confirm a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

John Leguizamo, who previously portrayed Luigi in the 1993 live-action film, expressed interest in participating in a potential sequel on the condition of more diversity within the cast.

On March 10, 2024 a sequel was announced.

Possible spin-offs[]

In November 2021, reports emerged that Illumination was developing a Donkey Kong spin-off film, with Rogen set to reprise his role.[89] In April 2023, Rogen openly expressed interest in Donkey Kong Country forming the basis of future works, stating it created "a lot of opportunity" for a spin-off film. In February 2022, Day expressed interest in reprising his role as Luigi in a Luigi's Mansion film and reiterated his interest in March 2023. In February 2022, Charlie Day expressed interest in doing a Luigi's Mansion film, and reiterated his interest in March 2023.[90]
