Ask for the Plugin or Theme that a support thread belongs to in the Create Topic form

Description

The create topic form on the Support Forums has this text displayed before it:

Looking for help with a specific theme or plugin? Don't post here – instead, head to the theme or plugin's page and find the "View support forum" link to visit the theme or plugin's individual forum.

It seems that many people disregard that and create topics anyway, and it often ends up with the topic being duplicated into the plugins forum.

Perhaps we should ask "What plugin or theme does this apply to?" and give an auto-completed list of plugins/themes, and then allowing the user to select either "Ask this question in the _XYZ forum_, or the general _Fixing WordPress forum_" as part of the topic creation flow.

If the topic gets created in the general forum, we can keep the plugin/theme metadata around to ease future categorisation of threads.

Hah, have you been watching my theory crafting sessions? :)

The screencast is a bit large for uploads here, so I'll share the dropbox link instead: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j2y79d3iuf776zz/2020-09-09%2009-44-36.mkv?dl=0

This has been shared with #forums and #meta some months back, not as a proposal, but more as a bit of idea-spurring sessions, but I still have my test page markup if it's something we'd like to dig further into :)

The screencast

I hadn't seen that! But that's probably a much better way than I was thinking of :)

I've been spending some time in the forums, and decided to ticket every annoyance and idea I have while doing so - Spending a day in someone elses shoes tends to lead to buying new shoes..

I really like the implementation Marius envisioned. As per this meeting we pointed out some things:

  • Now and then, one would stumble upon something that is a clash between two things. Things are not always solid colours, but also shades, so there has to be an option for that theme that doesn't work with that plugin when that core feature is enabled.
  • It has to be easy to find the right plugin among 20+ with similar names. With a dropdown list, that's not quite easy.
