I dupe-hammered a question tagged with and which hasn't been edited; tags were added by the OP. I have both gold badges, however, I have more votes on plus I acquired it before .

This could be ; nevertheless, I would like to know why was chosen over ?

Edit:

  • awarded in March, 2014. Total votes: 1965
  • awarded in January, 2015. Total votes: 1195

Edit:

Just to clarify my question, is there a specific criteria behind it or is it a random behavior?

It looks like the tag with more questions/higher traffic is picked.

@πάνταῥεῖ no. I have edited my question to reflect date of awarding each tag as well as total votes.

My guess would be alphabetic order rather than some complex algorithm

  • @Paulie_D no, tags are re-arranged by number of questions. I tagged this question with discussion, dupe-hammer and lastly tags; they were re-arranged because tags has more questions.

  • @rene the deleted answer contradicts that. Maybe it selects the first tag entered by the OP.

  • See the comments on this Meta SE post. They're inconclusive, but it's (reportedly) not based on number of questions in the tag. Commented Mar 30, 2016 at 19:52
  • It happened again (stackoverflow.com/q/36373434/1771795) I would love to know why?

Normally, I wouldn't upvote a question complaining about too many gold badges, but that flag. Have an upvote. Commented Jun 12, 2017 at 20:44
