The Squadron Supreme of America was a team of superheroes construct created by the demon Mephisto^[1] and programmed by the Power Elite in cooperation with a recently-revived Agent Coulson to act as the United States of America's first line of defense, a role that once belonged to the Avengers. But secretly to further Coulson and Mephisto's schemes.^[2][3]

The origins of each team member prior to their debut to the world remains unknown. But what is is each team member was seen being manipulated and conditioned by Coulson and the Power Elite in different ways.^[2]

The Squadron Supreme of America first appeared when Phil Coulson, acting as their liaison, promoted them to Thunderbolt Ross as the United States of America's sanctioned superhero team.^[4] The Squadron then confronted different radical groups like King Namor's Defenders of the Deep.^[5]

After the death of General Ross,^[6] Col. Joseph Ledger aka Doctor Spectrum was now in charge, and was shown the conditioning and manipulation Coulson and the Power Elite were putting his teammates through. Seeing what they were doing as torturing fellow citizens Ledger become angry and wanted it all shut down. But Coulson uttered a trigger phrase putting him under control, revealing that what he was doing to the team already being done to Ledger.^[2]

When Malekith the Accursed attacked Earth during the War of the Realms, the Squadron Supreme of America were summoned when Frost Giants from the realm of Jotunheim invaded Washington, D.C.. The Squadron routed the invaders out of the American frontier in Lake Erie, and were subsequently sent to Ohio.^[2]

The Squadron Supreme of America were summoned to confront Black Panther when he infiltrated Phil Coulson's office at the Pentagon. Before they could apprehend him, Black Panther had Broo teleport him away. As he disappeared, Black Panther stated to the Squadron Supreme that the Avengers weren't their enemies, but would become such if their hand was forced.^[7]

Coulson later sold his soul to Mephisto to gain the power of the Pandemonium Cube, a demonic artifact with the power to warp reality itself.^[3] Coulson used the Cube to change Earth-616 to Earth-21798, a reality where the Avengers never existed and the Squadron Supreme were the world's premiere superhero team.^[8] Reality was eventually returned to normal by Blade the Vampire Hunter and his team of Avengers. For his failure, Mephisto trapped Coulson in the Pandemonium Cube. With Coulson's disappearance, the Squadron Supreme fell apart. Blur, Doctor Spectrum, and Power Princess were taken into government custody, Hyperion went to Russia, and Nighthawk went off on his own to remake reality back to Earth-21798.^[3]

Later, remnants of the team were seen in Western Russia's Ural Mountains, where Hyperion had gone to hide and get help from Red Widow. Once they arrived, Doctor Spectrum attempted to arrest Red Widow, under the believe she was using Red Room brainwashing techniques on Hyperion. But Power Princess killed Doctor Spectrum and took his Power Prism for herself. Power Princess, feeling Red Widow would understand being used by Governments and Devils would halt Blur from killing Red Widow. Red Widow would then tell them that she was using these techniques to help Hyperion undo what was done to him. To Hyperion's horror Power Princess liked this and allow Red Widow to continue, and seemingly for Power Princess's own ends.^[9]
