Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a Super Mario series game for the Nintendo Switch. It is the first new 2D Super Mario Bros. game since New Super Mario Bros. U. It was revealed in a Nintendo Direct on June 21, 2023. The game was released internationally on October 20, 2023.

Gameplay[]

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a platformer game that includes playable characters such as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Blue Toad, Yellow Toad, Toadette, Nabbit and the Yoshis. Their moveset features standard abilities, for instance the Wall Jump and the Ground Pound. The Yoshis retain their Flutter Jump, ability to use their tongue, and can also be used as a mount, and they and Nabbit do not take any damage from enemies. The players can receive new abilities by consuming power-ups, both returning and brand-new ones, such as an elephant-themed fruit.

The signature feature of the game is the Wonder Flower, a power-up that changes the world around Mario and friends in unique and strange ways, examples including bringing Warp Pipes to life and causing themselves and elements of the stage to stretch upward. Also revolving around the "Wonder" theme are the Wonder Seeds and purple coins, prominent collectibles. Another notable addition are Talking Flowers, non-playable characters that populate the levels and comment on the events and gimmicks nearby.

The game has a very expansive world map, allowing you to walk around it in open area's much like Super Mario 3D World. Unlike most Mario games, the game allows you to choose the levels you want to play, and collect the wonder seeds, to unlock levels and progress. The game also includes Poplins, the residents of the flower kingdom. You can find them around the map and talk to them. Or you may even find them running a shop, where you can buy 1 ups, badges, or standee's.

The game takes place in a location distinct from its predecessors and foregoes some of their established elements while featuring new level themes, such as autumnal forests and savannas. The hub consists of a contiguous world map, similar to that of New Super Mario Bros. U, where each level is represented by a 3D modeled icon, as in Super Mario 3D World. Also similar to both games, levels have unique names. Each one is also assigned a difficulty rating in-game, a feature only found previously in Super Mario Maker 2's Story Mode.

Unlike every other 2D side-scrolling Super Mario game, excluding Super Mario Bros. 2, there is no time limit, so the characters can explore levels for as long as desired.

Development[]

On June 21, 2023, a Nintendo Direct has showcased Super Mario Bros. Wonder.[2] On August 31, 2023, more of Super Mario Bros. Wonder was shown in a 15-minute-long Nintendo Direct specifically focused on it. Super Mario Bros. Wonder also supposedly never had a deadline, as producer Takashi Tezuka stated: “I wanted to prevent people from saying, ‘We won’t make that deadline, so that’s why we didn’t do it—we can’t do it,’”

In regard to the new badge system, producer Tezuka had this to say: “It felt more like maybe something that you would see in a Zelda title, it didn’t really feel very Mario-esque … Mario gameplay is a lot more straightforward and simple.” According to Tezuka, the simple formula of older Mario games just isn't enough anymore. “When Mario first came out, of course, everything was new, so we really didn’t have to explain anything or convince people to do that play style,” Tezuka says. “We provided the game, and people were able to come up with their own play styles.”

The team also wanted to make a more unique and repayable experiences. Tezuka said, “If someone plays through a course, finishes it, moves on, and never comes back, that makes me a little sad. I really want players to play courses again and again.” For Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the development team took big risks. Instead of following the limitations of Mario, Tezuka urged developers “If you think it looks cool, it’s going to be fun. Do it.”

Story[]

Real-world influences[]

In pop culture[]

The Nintendo Direct of Wonder received mixed reactions of excitement and concern. Fans took interest with Princess Daisy being playable, a new elephant power-up, and even the art direction. Fans were concerned noticing Mario's voice is off, pointing out the voice is different from Charles Martinet which some implied that it either matured or Mario's voice actor got replaced (which the latter theory would later become true as of August 21, 2023).

Trivia[]

  • On August 21, 2023, it was announced that Charles Martinet is retiring from providing voice acting for the Super Mario games.[5] This means that Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first game to feature Kevin Afghani as the new voice of Mario and Luigi.
  • This is the second Mario platformer game to feature Daisy as a playable character, the first being Super Mario Run.
    • This is the first console Mario platformer to feature Daisy as a playable character .
    • This is also Daisy's third appearance in a mainline Mario game, The first being her debut in Super Mario Land and the second being Super Mario Run (which is officially considered mainline by Nintendo).
  • Excluding New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (which is a direct port), Super Mario Bros. Wonder is first original 2D Super Mario series platformer to be released on the Nintendo Switch.
  • Not counting entries in Super Mario Maker, its follow-ups, and the iOS/Android release Super Mario Run, this is the first 2D Super Mario game since Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 (Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins if not counting ports) to not use the New Super Mario Bros. label.
    • It is the first game with Super Mario Bros. in the title to not use the New Super Mario Bros. label since the sub-series inception.
  • This is also the first game since Super Mario 64 DS in the Super Mario series where Yoshi is an individual playable character rather than playing his usual role as a rideable sidekick.
  • This game has the most playable characters in Mario game since Super Mario Run, as this game has 12 playable characters: Mario (1), Luigi (2), Peach (3), Daisy (4), Light Blue Yoshi (5), Red Yoshi (6), Green Yoshi (7), Yellow Yoshi (8), Blue Toad (9), Yellow Toad (10), Toadette (11), and Nabbit (12).
  • Nabbit and Yoshi are shown to be "Easy-Mode Characters" as revealed at the Super Mario Bros. Wonder Direct. This is second time Nabbit has been declared an "Easy Mode" Character and the first time for Yoshi.
    • However, during certain Wonder Effects such as the one in Maw Maw Mouthful, the Yoshis and Nabbits can still be eaten by Maw Maws.
  • This is the second game where Mario can transform into a Goomba. The first time was in Super Mario Odyssey.
  • This is the first game to have characters walk while crouching, and characters that can throw Fire Balls while crouching.
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder has sold 4.3 million copies within 2 weeks, making this one of the best sales performances of a Super Mario game.
  • This game was released on the same week as Sonic Superstars.
