Meeting Note Takers

Meeting recap notes are one of the best ways to get started contributing to a team, and you can find details on how to write notes in this handbook page.

Looking for feedback

Please leave your thoughts on the post by March 9th (this Saturday)

@ironnysh and @ardianimaya have volunteered to continue writing Contributor Spotlight posts on the Training Team blog. And we’d like the team to nominate the next people to interview.

@devmuhib has nominates @digitalchild for his excellent afford to #training and #meta-learn and @bsanevans has nominated @psykro and @west7 who have been actively creating learning pathway content recently.

We’re also looking for nominations of active Training Team contributors to interview next. Either leave your nominations in the Slack thread here, in the spreadsheet in the document, or pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.”
@ironnysh or @ardianimaya.

Looking for volunteers

We’re looking for volunteers to outline a new Learning Pathway for contributors to the WordPress project.

So far, the team has curriculum outlined for User, Developer, and Designer learning pathways. We’d also like to create a pathway for Contributors. This will involve outlining a curriculum like Learning Pathway: Intermediate User #2002, identifying what resources already exist on Learn and what new resources need to be created.

  • What requirements should the team look our for in a translation pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party for https://learn.wordpress.org/?

Come leave your thoughts in Testing translation plugins for Learn WordPress #2231.

We also invite @faculty-translation-coordinators to leave their feedback about the requirements that have already been submitted.

Updates from last week’s dev-squad triage session

Attendees: @psykro, @digitalchild, @freewebmentor, @devmuhib

PRs/issues triaged:

We’re looking for any interested team members who can help test translation plugins on the Learn.WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ local development environment. If you’re interested, please comment on the GitHub issue.

Important The team also decided to switch to holding 2 triage sessions a month going forward, on the 2nd and 4th week of the month. We have been very successful in keeping untriaged issues and PRs to a minimum, so this change will allow more time between triage sessions.

The team’s meeting calendar has been updated to reflect these changes.

Discussion for WordCamp Us:

Things that are exciting for the WordCamp US:

Discussion for any favorite memory at WordCamps:

  1. @psykro said – “My first WordCamp EU contributor day in Serbia, where I got to meet many fellow contributors across the project for the first time and make new friends, many of whom I now work with today”
  2. @piyopiyofox shared that “For me, I think it was this year’s WC Asia Contributor Day– we had so many new and improved processes that we explored, and it was exciting to see it in action– like the onboarding session”
  3. @bsanevans shared that “I’ve only been to one previous WordCamp – this year’s WordCamp Asia. Everything was new to me, but I had a blast! I spoke at that WordCamp, and the positive response I got from people afterward was encouraging”
  4. @jominney shared that “I’m super excited to meet other contributors in person. There is only one other that I know of in my state, and he’s full-time with Automattic working on GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/. It will also be my first contributor day and my first flagship WC!”

@piyopiyofox asked to share what kind of emails would be most helpful to receive after visiting Learn WordPress

  • @psykro shared that – “I can personally see the benefit of some of these reminder emails, but I agree with the person who created the ticket that it should be under the users’ control. I feel like this is an area where the goals for an internal or paid LMS platform and Learn WordPress differ slightly. So I think it will be useful for us to discuss how we can reenable these emails, but so that they are useful to learners, as well as controllable by learners”
  • @bsanevans shared – “I think a welcome message is nice when folks sign up for a course. A notice of completion at the end of a course would also be beneficial. Other than that, an easy way to sign up (and opt out later) for the Learn newsletter would be great. They would then send out monthly emails to the learner, reminding them of the platform and its content. I don’t think we’d need the Sensei pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party’s default reminder emails then”

October 2021 Team Sprint

The Training team is using the Sprint method to determine what we are working on and to determine our timeframe for delivery.

What is a Sprint?

Sprints are fixed length events of one month or less to create consistency. A new Sprint starts immediately after the conclusion of the previous Sprint.

https://www.scrum.org/resources/what-is-a-sprint-in-scrum

As a team, we follow the Sprint approach loosely. While some of us are agency-sponsored contributors, others are self-sponsored. We recognize that volunteers may choose to work on what interests them, while agency-sponsored individuals may work through the priorities assigned to them. We allow room for both approaches in our Sprint planning. What is most important is that we work in the open and share what we are working on here.

This post may be updated throughout the month to reflect work that has been completed. Append any explanations as comments below.

Sprint Goals

Learn Maintenance

Learn Content

We are currently using TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. to manage and keep track of the status of each piece of content on Learn (lesson plans, video workshops and courses). Every piece of content has its own Trello card. The Trello lists represent our Development Workflow, each list contains a card that explains how to use that list.

Lesson Plan, Workshop Video Workshop and Course Ideas

The cards in this list are in need of a contributor to:

  • Finalize description
  • Set objectives (goals)
  • Research and add links to support and developer docs
  • Identify marketing communications

The cards in this list have been drafted but are in need of a team member to quality check them before going to copyediting:

  • Does the description fairly describe what is covered?
  • Have the objectives been written using Bloom’s Taxonomy?
  • Have the objectives been met?
  • Does the assessment (quiz) match the objectives?
  • Are the pre-requisite skills really necessary?
  • Will “students” be able to perform the exercises with what has been covered?
  • Does the content build from or duplicate material in other lesson plans, video workshops or courses?

If that’s you, add yourself as a Member on the card and as the Current Owner. When you finished, move the card to the Ready for Copyediting list. If you have started working on a card and are unable to take it to completion, please let the team know in the Slack #training channel.

News

Badges for courses Please continue to share and provide comments if you haven’t had a chance yet. The proposal is to enable learners to demonstrate what they have learnt on Learn by issuing them with badges linked to their .org profile. We would love to get feedback from employers who may look at .org profiles when considering employment.

Brand Guidelines proposal These have now been published on the Learn Handbook. They indicate how brands can be used and/or mentioned on Learn WordPress. Thank you to everyone who commented on the post. As a result of these being published, we have unblocked reviews on quite a few lesson plans. Confirmed after the meeting by @hlashbrooke that these brand guidelines only apply within LearnWP and not elsewhere in the project.

WCUS speaker application We are awaiting feedback from the team and as soon as we have more information we will let you know.

Translation Days Like captioning, translating captions is also beneficial for global WordPress users. Training will host at least 1 subtitling session working session for LearnWP in the last half of September in conjunction with #polyglots WordPress Translator Day.@Webtechpooja will help us coordinate with Polyglots. Date is yet to be decided, checking availability in between Sept 17-30, 2021. In addition, there is now an article on Learn metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. about this. Workshop Caption (Subtitle) Translation.

Windows Testers needed for Dev Testing Environment – If anyone is available to test setting up a dev testing environment on Windows please join the conversation in slack. Your efforts will go towards creating the lesson plan.

Sprint

August Sprint Retrospective

What went well?

  • Completed several lesson plans, captioning, and handbook also new team members this month and coffee hours
  • It felt like a TON was accomplished by the team: Brand Guidelines, Badges, Conversation about Slides platofrm, WCUS application, translations. I’m sure I’m missing a few things, but wow!
  • Worked on the rough draft of a potential future course, which is brand new. That outline and much of the content is done, but I’m still polishing.
  • I feel like we accomplished a lot this month particularly brand guidelines, captioning, solution for slides and APAC meeting

What could we improve?

  • Improve onboarding more contributors for roles like proofreading, note taking, and other short chunks of contribution
  • Every different piece I mentioned has some friction to get involved with…knowing where the discussion is happening, how to get involved is still tricky.
  • Onboarding process still needs work

What will we do differently?

  • Continue to help everyone get familiar with processes and opportunities
  • Document processes (and get feedback on processes!) to make future courses easier for future contributors to work with.
  • Finding smaller chunks of work for people to work on

Retrospective Summary

Looking through the feedback it seems there is a consensus around onboarding and making it easier for people to contribute. Courtney is working on a course this month for Contributing to the Training team this will help make it easier for people to know where to go and what to do.

Some discussion ensued regarding how best to onboard new folks. If you are interested in helping with this process, please join the conversation on slack.

Our proposed Sprint for September.

Please have a look at let us know if there is anything you are working on that you will like us to add or if you want to work on any of the lesson plans listed.

The Sprint tracks what we will be working on next.

Lesson plans that we had put on hold pending the brand guidelines will be added to the September sprint shortly.

Open Discussions

Two topics were posted during the open discussion but neither saw much immediate interaction prior to meeting close. If you have thoughts on either of these, please join the conversation on slack.

@arasae: Perhaps making space in this meeting to ask questions like, “How do I take notes? What is something I could help with today? I don’t know where to start on the TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. board, what would you suggest?” could spark conversation.

@Nalininonstopnewsuk could we include what resources people will need to take part in the sprints? Eg google docs, etc. Agreed.

September 2021 Team Sprint

The Training team is using the Sprint method to determine what we are working on and to determine our timeframe for delivery.

What is a Sprint?

Sprints are fixed length events of one month or less to create consistency. A new Sprint starts immediately after the conclusion of the previous Sprint.

https://www.scrum.org/resources/what-is-a-sprint-in-scrum

Sprint Goals

Learn Maintenance

  • Translation work sessions for subtitles and post content
  • Auditing all posts/lesson plans/workshops/courses for taxonomyTaxonomy A taxonomy is a way to group things together. In WordPress, some common taxonomies are category, link, tag, or post format. https://codex.wordpress.org/Taxonomies#Default_Taxonomies.
  • Creating slides for new plans

Learn Content

We are currently using TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. to manage and keep track of the status of each piece of content on Learn (lesson plans, video workshops and courses). Every piece of content has its own Trello card. The Trello lists represent our Development Workflow, each list contains a card that explains how to use that list.

Lesson Plan, Video Workshop and Course Ideas

The cards in this list are in need of a contributor to:

  • Finalize description
