4c. Contributor Events Update

Update via@eidolonnight
Slack thread

GitHub card for WordCamp US Contributor Day Marketing Table (Card 90)
With WordCamp US approaching in September, it would be nice to start a list of who plans to attend. General admission tickets went on sale on June 30th and have already sold out. If you couldn’t get yours, the organizing team recommends checking the site periodically to see if any become available.

Nicholas will complete the form for our team for table leads, table onboarders and team Slack reps.

About 40 registrants expressing interest in Marketing on Contributor Day, so any help here is very welcome. The “Slack Rep” does not need to be at WCUS in-person.

Table Leads: Table leads will be helping direct traffic – welcoming folks to the table and pointing them to various tables for projects or table onboarding.

Team Onboarder (Optional): Ideally, we would like to see each table have someone who will take responsibility for onboarding new contributors. While some teams might do this at the beginning of the day, new contributors might show up later.

Team Slack Rep (Optional): This person can be at WCUS in person or online remotely. They would be responsible for helping out folks in Slack by answering questions or helping folks who are participating remotely get started. So far @nalininonstopnewsukini has volunteered for this role.
If you got your ticket and plan to attend specifically for contributor day, please let us know in this thread! Also let us know if you would like to volunteer for one of the roles above on the GitHub card (link above).

We’re up to about 22.6 million downloads. We’ve been posting about 6.0 on the main WP social media accounts at least once, but sometimes 2x per week and these posts have been performing above-average with regards to engagement.

  • @jpantani, @santanainniss and @yvettesonneveld hosted some 20 contributors.
  • @santanainniss onboarded 10 new contributors. Her group collaborated on some marketing tasks that did not require a lot of historic knowledge of the product or community. They came up with lots of great suggestions to improve onboarding and training.
  • @santanainniss along with 10 new contributors shared their impressikons on what is currently going on the official WordPress channels and started engaging with some of that content.
  • @jpantani hosted a group that went out on a field trip. They chatted with other contributors to find out what their favorite WordPress features were and how these impacted their lives. In order to group those in a helpful way, we also asked which user group described the respondents best. The same group was requested to ask around for websites and platforms that deserved a spot on the WordPress Showcase, so we now have some additional suggesgtions for that too.
  • @yvettesonneveld hosted a group that worked on microcopy for some WordPress 6.0 related content on the Learn.WordPress.org platform.
  • @dansoschin will go through the drafts this week, they will be edited if needed and will hopefully be shining on the channels soon.
  • @jpantani, @santanainniss and @yvettesonneveld will plan a retro meeting soon, to chat about what worked and what could be improved for future live sessions.

6.0 release update summarized from the GitHub card updated by @webcommsat

A systems and GitHub meeting is being set up on documentation aimed at end users, and pulling together the various skills/ contributors on this from documentation, training, marketing.

More details will be shared soon following an update with training/ WP Learn on potential changes that could be made on existing GitHub use.

The aim is to use GitHub to share and track the areas relating to end users more easily between the teams, now that marketing, documentation and Learn WP are moving / have moved to GitHub. Testing is being developed on how this could be done using some of the new GitHub tools.

Thank you to @bph, @milana_cap and @webcommsat who are leading the Documentation aspects for 6.0. They will share an update on this at a future meeting, and be chatting more with @dansoschin, @marybaum, @annezazu, and others too.

  • Image and video editing volunteers welcome.

  • Note re. Slack and Make WordPress onboarding videos.

There is currently an issue as the Make WordPress screens have changed slightly from the original videos. This is being looked into. Due to the world situation, we will need some additional volunteers to help with updating / synchronizing the new versions, and supporting the polyglots with this. The skills needed for this are mainly video editing.

If video and photo editing is something you enjoy, these are good and fun ways to get involved.

@femkreations has offered to help with images in the future.

Meeting Notes

Each week we have a contributor who has been with us for a while draft notes supported by one of the working groups. This is then worked on further by the wider group by Saturday morning and used to plan follow-ups, report back to linked teams, give feedback, and plan actions by the Monday 11:00 UTC meeting.

We now have a rota of volunteers to help with this initial draft. We are increasingly writing our updates for team meetings in such a way that they make it easier to be used in our new system of notes and actions and simply copied to the draft notes.

A big thanks to @chaion07 for doing last week’s notes.

How can I help?

You can volunteer to be a note-taker for one of the future meetings. We currently have a rota. Please note that the initial draft is needed by the end of Friday each week.

Facebook oEmbed Update

Update via: @yvettesonneveld

Facebook is deprecating the open oEmbed code that allows WordPress users to embed WordPress posts. Come October, these embeds will start showing up as links only. Previously embedded posts should remain unchanged. It looks like the next minor version of WordPress (5.5.x) will already discontinue support of the Facebook blocks. If you’d like to read more about this, I’ll add links in the thread. Since this may cause confusion and frustration for users, the release MarComms team recommended  creating content targeted to informing non-technical users. We will keep you posted on next steps.
