LGBTQIA+ Wiki is a dedicated resource for LGBTQIA+ topics, including sexual and romantic orientations, gender identities, and the LGBTQIA+ community as a whole. LGBTQIA+ means Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual/Aromantic/Agender, plus many more included in these terms.

Launched on January 19, 2022, this wiki is the primary Fandom-hosted resource for the English-speaking LGBTQIA+ community. We hope to create an open, welcoming, and inclusive environment where everyone feels safe and respected. Our goal is to provide an objective, educational, and comprehensive resource about all things LGBTQIA+. Anyone can register for an account to contribute to and expand this wiki.

Gender

Gender is generally defined by behavioral, cultural, or psychological traits assigned certain meanings by society. An individual's gender includes their identity, expression, and presentation, as well as the roles and norms associated with them. Although historically equated with sex, gender is increasingly understood as being separate. A person's gender identity may or may not align with their birth assignment. Most people, whether cisgender or transgender, have a gender identity of male/man/boy or female/woman/girl. For others, their gender identity does not fit neatly into one of those binary terms, such as people who are non-binary or genderqueer.

Sexual Orientations

Sexual orientation, also known as sexuality, refers to a person's sexual attractions towards others. The terms generally express which gender or genders a person is attracted to in relation to the person's own, if any. Others relate to how a person does or does not experience sexual attraction. While the most common terms are largely defined using the gender binary of male or female, sexuality and gender are more expansive than that. Sexual orientation and sexual activity can be independent of each other. Orientation also is not equivalent to a person's gender.

Romantic Orientations

Romantic orientation is related a person's romantic attractions or desires rather than sexual ones. While sexual orientation labels usually imply both sexual and romantic interest, a person's romantic and sexual attractions may differ. They are not the same thing for everyone and can be defined separately. The Split Attraction Model is sometimes used to convey these differences.

Non-binary, sometimes written as nonbinary, is a term referring to individuals whose gender identity does not exclusively fall into the binary gender classification of only "man" or "woman." Those who are non-binary may identify with either masculinity or femininity in some capacity, both, or neither at all. Although it is a gender identity on its own, it can also be used as an umbrella term to refer to many gender identities. While non-binary is included in the transgender umbrella, not all non-binary people use the term transgender as a personal label; some identify as cisgender. International Non-Binary People's Day has been observed each year on July 14 since 2012 and the surrounding week is Non-Binary Awareness Week, a specific time by, for, and about non-binary people to celebrate themselves and their communities, and to spread awareness to other people to how they can be a better ally to non-binary people.

Our History

The Annual Reminder Days were held each July 4 from 1965 to 1969 outside of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in response to the USA barring "sexual deviants"—"homosexuals"—from federal government employment. Thousands of people lost their jobs based on their sexual orientation. Annual Reminder participants dressed in formal business attire to communicate "respectability" and carried signs with messages such as "Homosexuals Ask For Equality Before the Law".
