Special Olympics Europe Eurasia (SOEE) President & Managing Director, David Evangelista, participated in a webinar organized by the Europe-Asia Center to discuss the societal impact of sports. Evangelista emphasized the importance of inclusion, which has transitioned from being a peripheral concern to a central theme in global development, underscored by the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the motto of "leaving no one behind." He highlighted significant challenges faced by people with intellectual disabilities, such as low employment rates, limited access to education and healthcare, and social isolation. He also discussed the role of the Special Olympics Global Leadership Coalition for Inclusion, supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, in fostering inclusion and community unity. This coalition engages national governments to finance inclusive sports initiatives. Every month, our ‘Meet the Team’ series takes you behind the scenes at Special Olympics Europe Eurasia (SOEE) to get to know one of our wonderful team members! This month, we’re chatting to Pamela Herrera, also known as Pam or Pame, SOEE’s Manager for Athlete Leadership, Young Athletes, the Motor Activity Training Program (MATP) and Family Engagement. “What I like most about my work with Special Olympics is seeing the profound impact it has on the athletes and their families,” Pamela says. “It's incredibly rewarding to witness the joy and sense of accomplishment that each event brings. I cherish the moments when I can interact directly with the athletes and their families, learning about their journeys and seeing the positive changes that Special Olympics inspire in their lives.” Based in Spain, Pamela balances her busy work life with quality time spent with her family as well as running and high-intensity training (HIT) which she finds incredibly energizing! She would advise anyone who is interested in stepping into a role like hers to be passionate about promoting inclusion for people with disabilities, gain direct experience of working/volunteering with people with disabilities, cultivate empathy and keep an open mind. Anyone who has worked with Pamela would certainly agree that she embodies this advice as a genuinely empathetic and open-minded colleague! #SpecialOlympics
