I'm going to take the liberty of changing the DC location to Dupont Circle. The National Mall actually can get quite dusty due to the gravel paths, and I don't like dust in my sandwich, thanks. Plus Dupont Circle has more shade, a fountain, restaurants nearby for people who don't want to make their own lunch, and is right on top of a Metro station. Dupont Circle can get rather crowded. Here are some other options:

• Gravelly Point Park (would be very awesome + watching airplanes! a short walk from the Reagan Airport metro station)
• Meridian Hill Park? (near U St)
• West or East Potomac Park, near the Tidal Basin?
• Rock Creek Park (e.g. Carter Baron), with bbqs available, lots of shade, etc. and suitable for potluck? We would arrange carpools and Carter Baron, if we get that, is along 16th St (lots of buses)

Any of those locations sound quite lovely as well. As long as it's transit-accessible, I think it would definitely work. Gravelly Point might bring up concerns that were brought up about meetups, that having something in the Virginia suburbs would be too far for the Maryland folks, and vice versa.

Thanks Pharos for starting this off! So whereabouts in Central Park? By the Great Lawn and Turtle Pond and Delacorte Theater area again? Just FYI, this is considered a major holiday for many LGBT people who arrange their vacation time and travel plans to coincide with major Gay Pride events in their areas. I was interested until I saw the date, my plans for the last part of June are devoted to the various tie-in events, movie festivals, art events, annual meetings, etc. The weekend before is usually out as well for the same reason because major cities use the last weekend and smaller neighboring cities will utilize the week prior to avoid conflict. Will there be mock Edit Wars? With people dressed up like they do while they edit — you know, pajamas, bedroom slippers, etc.? We could have a Rude Editors' contest, too. And a Bite the Newcomers arena (if a Newcomer can last more than 15 seconds, he wins). Female editors get into the Wicnic free; bring a female friend; bring a dozen. We could have a Barnstar-hurling contest, too. Not sure what the rules would be. Maybe you have some ideas? We could choose the Grumpiest Editor. The Nicest Editor. Also: The Editor Who Reads and Speaks Arabic, Chinese, Russian and French and Doesn't Care Who Knows It. How about — the Editor Who Has Made the Two Thousandth edit on a Harry Potter-related article? That would be something like a lottery; we could set up a clock to count off the edits while a bunch of Editors flail away at keyboards making their "improvements." Oh, what fun! Last weekend, Wikipedians ran a booth at Maker Faire in San Mateo. It was a big success! Lots of folks stopped by, with questions and stories to share about Wikipedia. The organizers did a fantastic job -- there were several laptops set up with things like the Wikipedia Game, live feeds of recent changes, etc. Appreciative "makers" added their comments about Wikipedia to a big poster, which I'm sure will be posted somewhere some day -- there were some great comments there.

But why am I telling you all this here? Because it was a good chance to circulate an invitation to our local Wiknic! We got 15 email addresses, and I'm really excited to think that we may have a number of newbies and interested readers in our midst, in addition to the veteran editors who often attend meetups.

I just sent out on-wiki invitations to the Wikipedians who have opted into such things, in addition to an email to all these new names. Names are starting to trickle in on our signup list. Once we get a little clearer on the start time and location, I plan to submit to Fun Cheap SF, a local web site and email list advertising free and cheap events; and some other local announcement spots.

there is only one place near me for this picnic, and it's los angeles. i am about 30 miles from the location in l.a. (or about 111085 cubitus), and I cannot get there. is there any way to have one nearer to Anaheim? I would love to go there, as I am new to wikipedia editing. Thank You! On the home page, I clicked the link that said I was invited to this picnic thing. When I clicked it, I was brought to this page and everything loaded properly. However, three seconds after the page was fully loaded, this page became covered in shock imagery (much like Encyclopedia Drammatica's Offended page), yet the address bar still indicated that I was on Wikipedia. 96.238.30.200 (talk) 02:49, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Someone on the main page suggested Santa Fe, but screw that, Albuquerque is EASILY more accessible than Santa Fe and we have more cool people here. (Logically, if our population is bigger then the average percent of cool people remains the same but the number goes up, but also that's logical because we're talking about the difference between Albuquerque and Santa Fe here, I mean, c'mon). I find it offensive that the pic has not one minority in it. You couldn't find one picture that showed a variety of people? Or is it because the vast majority of wikipedia contributors are white? Wait, what's "offensive " about the pic not showing a minority? Perhaps it's a little bit unsettling, but it is far from offensive ... perhaps being a Wikipedia editor is something that mainly well-to-do people care for? And most well-to-do people English-speakers are white?

The "map of US urban areas tentatively holding local events for The Great American Wiknic" shows dots for Orlando, Tampa, and Miami (Florida), but no Wiknics are listed for these areas. Well I can tell you that the last thing in Miami was a no show. I didn't try to make it, but out of the very few per capita editors from there there is even less that are willing to participate in something like this.
