SmartSignal is a privately held multinational technology and services company headquartered in Lisle, Illinois and notable for commercializing patented predictive analytic and predictive diagnostic technology comprised of complex algorithms to provide early warning of faults in large industrial equipment. SmartSignal now holds over 40 patents on the technology which originated at the Argonne National Laboratory University of Chicago with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy.[1][2][3]

Facilitated by ARCH Development Corporation, an early-stage investment group launched to assist commercialization of research projects at Argonne and the University of Chicago (UChicago), the UChicago Office of Technology and Intellectual Property (UCTech) initially oversaw ARCH assets and contracts, including intellectual property rights for the fledgling technology.[4] Founded in 1996, SmartSignal’s first CEO Gary Conkright was recruited in 1998 to secure venture capital. [5]Investors include Archer Daniels Midland Company, Arch Development Partners, CID Capital (previously CID Equity Partners), Gryffindor Capital, River Cities Capital Funds, The Stephens Group, and a variety of smaller investors. UCTech remains a significant shareholder in SmartSignal.[6][7][8]

Markets for SmartSignal predictive technology include Oil & Gas and Power Generation industries; the company has installations in combined cycle, steam-fossil, hydro, nuclear, and wind power plants. N.A. customers include Ameren, Arizona Public Service, BC Hydro, Entergy, Invenergy, and Mitsubishi Power Systems.[9] International customers include EDF, Edipower, Electrabel, Iberdrola, Korea South-East Power, and Zhejiang Energy. [10] [11][12] Upstream, midstream, and downstream O&G users include British Petroleum (BP Alaska, Alternative Energy, Refineries), Chevron North America Exploration & Production and Global Power, and Caterpillar. SmartSignal also works in the aviation industry, with customers including Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines. In 2009 SmartSignal became a Microsoft Gold partner; other SmartSignal partners include: Accenture, AID Corporation, Caterpillar, Chenggeng, General Physics Corporation, Indra, Management Resources Group (MRG), Marubeni Corporation, OSIsoft, and Transpara.[13][14]
