This is probably not the best Talk page to have this discussion, but I had to pick one, and I'll try to add references to other places that might want input.

There are several different places where distilleries in Scotland are listed/enumerated. Here, Scotch whisky, List of distilleries in Scotland and who knows where else. Unfortunately, the lists are not consistent. Sometimes grain distilleries are included, and sometimes not. Sometimes new distilleries are included, sometimes not. The easiest to see example is the Lowlands list. Here, it is currently 5 distilleries - Annandale, Auchentoshan, Bladnoch, Daftmill, Glenkinchie. Scotch whisky lists "only three distilleries remain in operation: Auchentoshan, Bladnoch, and Glenkinchie". Auchentoshan distillery says it is "one of six distilleries in the Scottish Lowlands", adding in Ailsa Bay Distillery. Lowland Single Malts says "The region now only has four currently producing distilleries" listing Auchentoshan, Bladnoch, Glenkinchie and Ailsa Bay. It lists Annandale and Daftmill as distilling but not yet selling product. Both Bladnoch and Glenkinchie articles mention 6 distilleries in the Lowlands, but do not enumerate them. List of distilleries in Scotland has 5, not including Annandale. I think we need some consistency in usage.

I would suggest that all operating distilleries be listed, separated into a "malt" section, and a "grain" section, and that operating mean "distilling". I'm open to other interpretations, but I'd like some consistency across the articles. Ahwiv (talk) 19:09, 23 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the differences between this template and the List of distilleries in Scotland is probably because previous edits were attempting to avoid redirects and redlinks in a navbox per the guidelines for them. There's still a bunch of redlinks in the list article. As for the main article, it should be thinned out and kept to a brief overview. As for the various regional articles, they should just be merged to the main article; they are really pointless stubs. oknazevad (talk) 19:55, 23 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it would be the most logical approach to list all operating distilleries. If a distillery distills it must go into all the lists. And it shouldn't matter whether they sell whisky or their whisky is not ready yet. But I'm not sure if a strict division into "malt" and "grain" categories is absolutely necessary. First, this may lead to confusion. Loch Lomond is listed twice in List of distilleries in Scotland, probably because they've got regular pot stills and a patent still. Second, there is no strict border between "malt" and "grain". Some "malt" distilleries produce gin in their stills do they qualify as "grain"? LongDrink (talk) 22:38, 23 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
