Removing Vyatta[edit]

Vyatta is no longer a thing. It's so far gone that Ubiquiti forked it for their appliances, but have stopped using that worked distro in their latest appliances.

I'm adding VyOS to the Linux Distros since that's where most of the vyatta momentum seemed to go. Josephholsten (talk) 17:18, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Removing M0n0wall[edit]

While M0n0wall has been tremendously influential, it's been discontinued since 2015. I'm removing it, but if someone decides to add it back I hope they'll make it clear that the distribution is discontinued.

I'm also removing the small wall distro because it's not influential and has been inactive nearly as long. --Josephholsten (talk) 22:47, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Labels[edit]

Hi.

Per ScotXW's request, I changed the labels from "App" and "Linux distro". I thought "hosted" and "dedicated" may be excellent alternatives but I am open to other suggestions too.

Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 13:36, 16 May 2014 (UTC) P.S. I'd like to invite the top three contributors to the discussion. FleetCommand, MMuzammils, Semsi Paco Virchow. Can we please have your opinion? Thanks in advance. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 13:41, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't "request" anything, I reverted your bullshit changes. User:ScotXWt@lk 13:39, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A remarkable designation indeed. Could you please explain? Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 13:41, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sure: see the genius article Comparison of firewalls and my 2 cents: Talk:Comparison_of_firewalls#the_levels_of_crap_this_article_has_reached_are_hard_to_fathom. Cheers. User:ScotXWt@lk 13:53, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I see. But that pronouncement hardly applies here. This is a navbox that is supposed to guide people without resorting to so much technical Linux terms. Although I myself am familiar with Ubuntu and Mint, I have a hard time grasping the terms that you use. Technically correct categorization that cannot guide is practically lacking worth. How do you propose resolve that?

Puh, I see. I would suggest to grab some good documentation and enlighten yourself instead of spreading your lack of knowledge. User:ScotXWt@lk 14:03, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Alternatively we could wait for passer-by to vote with you against me. Who cares for arguments, right? User:ScotXWt@lk 14:05, 16 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
May I remind you that Wikipedia is the documentation that educates? In other words, we deliberately target non-"enlightened" people. Therefore, our language, our classification must suit them. But let's assume everyone knows everything about Linux? Why would he care as to whether choose a userland firewall or kernel module firewall? (Linux distro I understand, because it means changing the OS itself.)

"Alternatively we could wait..." See? That's what I meant. "Wikipedia is the documentation that educates"... WP was supposed to be but it ain't. Also thanks to edits like yours. User:ScotXWt@lk 10:14, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Or you can prove him wrong by starting the actual discussion. Our subject is "what's wrong with labels and how to correct them". You can also suggest a new categorization. Believe me, I am listening. I can give you a hint: The distinction between the distro group and app group is that the app group can coexist with the current infrastructure while the distro dedicates the operating system to firewall operation. What other factors that is important for decision making do you see?

Codename Lisa (talk) 12:37, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Let's assume I am at User:ScotXW's side. How am I supposed to defend his point of view when he does not even offer a single discussion on contents? Codename asked several questions about the practicality and ease understanding of the current classification, and the responses have so far been "bullshit", "crap" and "puh". What I am supposed to defend? Wikipedia:Tendentious editing? Not going to happen.

You win. Stay stupid, ignorant (in the German sense of the meaing) and of course: keep making decisions, especially regarding other peoples horizont. User:ScotXWt@lk 11:44, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is not about winning. It is not a battleground and disputes over content or behavior are not meant to be "won". Fleet Command (talk) 12:24, 18 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

PF ist not an appliance[edit]

PF is not an appliance: https://www.openbsd.org/faq/pf/ I would suggest to move it Apps Fabianfrz (talk) 09:40, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
