This article is highly Microsoft specific, yet is intended to cover the concept on different software platforms. This should be fixed. -- jhf 07:01, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Merging is problematic due to (1) the large amount of commercially biased marketing content in the Virtual Serial Port article, and (2) the overwhelming dominance of Windows COM port redirectors (vs. Linux, Mac, and other platforms combined) in the market for redirector technology generally and the resulting predominant use of "COM port redirector" as the useful term of art and search term. See my comments in the related discussion in Virtual serial port. -- User:MMK 15:21, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really surprised there isn't a Serial over Ethernet standard, with an RFC: there's certainly telnet and ssh, but as far as I can tell no-one seems to have ever cared enough to add support for the RS-232/RS-422 signalling lines, changes in line rate and framing, and line breaks, since it's superfluous in most UNIXy contexts. -- Karada 10:17, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A serial-over-Ethernet protocol is defined in RFC 2217, which is an extension of the telnet protocol. Though it has remained classified as experimental for ten years, RFC 2217 is widely used by multiple vendors as a de facto standard protocol for serial line signaling between modem/serial servers and COM port redirectors. -- User:MMK 18:28, 12 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just moved the Lantronix Redirector up to the Commercial Solutions section and deleted the link to DeviceComm Manager, which Lantronix EOLed several years ago and no longer supports. The CPR is freely downloadable, but it is tightly integrated with Lantronix device servers and cannot be used with non-Lantronix device servers. It is a Lantronix product, not Freeware.
