Plot

[edit]

The premise is very short; the rules say plots must be at least 400 words. Georgia guy (talk) 20:49, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Periods after abbreviations

[edit]

WP:MOS says that abbreviations like Dr. should have a period at the end. But Khajidha disagrees; they say that we should NOT use such periods if the article is in BE, contrary to the WP:LQUOTE essay. It says:

Wikipedia uses periods (stops) after everyday abbreviations like Dr. in most cases, not to be pedantic or to irritate British journalism students, but because it is clarifying and consistent.

If you really think Khajidha is right, please fix this sentence in the essay. Georgia guy (talk) 16:11, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you quoting WP:LQUOTE? It is just an explanatory essay. And not even one focused on abbreviations. The Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Full points (periods) says "Contractions that do not contain an apostrophe almost always take a period in North American English, but the point is optional in British English: Doctor can be abbreviated Dr. in American and Canadian English, but Dr. or Dr in British English. If in doubt, or if the dot-less usage could be confusing in the context, use the point. " --User:Khajidha (talk) (contributions) 16:22, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It is clearly confusing to all North American English speakers to omit the period. Do you understand this?? Georgia guy (talk) 16:28, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As I am a North American English speaker who is not confused by it, your point is invalidated. --User:Khajidha (talk) (contributions) 16:30, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If this article is in British English, and British reliable sources write without the periods, then I'm fine with excluding them. It looks like that happens here and here. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 18:04, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
