The text of this article is a rather quaint and gauche imitation of the florid style of those chroniclers of antiquity of all things and the arts. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.197.62.99 (talk) 17:14, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hanging Gardens print said to be improperly attributed to Heemskerck

[edit]

Looking at File:Hanging_Gardens_of_Babylon.jpg, the description says this is in fact believed to be a 19th-century print. Indeed, it looks off compared to the other van Heemskerck prints, which include text and a bit more flat-color stylized layers.

A Google search shows a number of such citations, until I found this grayscale, which is how the original cuts were made, I suppose. Regardless, it is very different from the one so linked. I have uploaded File:Heemskerck-hanginggardens.jpg taken from Pippin Michelli's site, but it can use additional verification from original sources. Regardless, I am replacing the currently-sourced image from this page. SamuelRiv (talk) 22:48, 21 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. We just had a similar discussion on the Dutch wiki. See nl:Overleg:Maarten_van_Heemskerck. Yes, you're right. That is the correct version. See also http://www.geheugenvannederland.nl/?/nl/items/BVB01:BDH13285DIPK. Btw, this series has been executed by Philip Galle after drawings by Heemskerck rather than just by Heemskerck. One of these drawings has survived. See commons:File:Maarten van Heemskerck - Kolos van Rhodos - 1570 - Courtauld Gallery Londen 2-12-2009 16-56-39.JPG. parrot

[edit]

The section about the parrots on Heemskerck's two St. Luke paintings is a bit surprising in the context of this rather short article. There doesn't seem to be the need to focus on this specific detail, as it's not of considerable importance for the artist's work in general. And the information doesn't lead to a deeper understanding of the works. I would suggest to delete this passage. NanoHeemskerck (talk) 16:31, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
