History

[edit]

Decision Tables have a long history that dates back to Babylon.

Even in Computer Science, Decision Tables were used in the 1950's and 1960's. I'd like to see more history added. I'll do this when I get some more time.
I too would like to see more about the history of decision tables. If any information about their use in ancient time can be used, that should be a paragraph. Another paragraph could be about the medieval ages and renaissance and another paragraph about late renaissance and use in early modern science. The last paragraph could be about 20th century, the connection with programming, development of software to automate decision processes, the link with expert systems and decision tables in 21st century science (including attempts of formalisation). The article at this website is useful but the problem is that it hasn't been backed up with any references whatsoever. --Xtalkprogrammer (talk) 11:40, 13 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

General Problems in the Article

[edit]

Regarding the "Structure" section, the final sentences: "Decision table can be used if the combination of conditions are given. In decision table conditions are known as causes and serinal numbers of conditions are known as business rule."

This article has quite a few problems. The extensive use of decision tables outside the field of computing should be made clear. The last section 'Program embedded decision tables' adds nothing to the article and doesn't belong here (the lookup table example might be added to the article on control tables, but a similar example is already provided there: a simple lookup table is not something anyone would ordinarily call a 'decision table'). The usefully concrete printer troubleshooter example (or some similar example of a decision table in the typical form) should be provided at the beginning of the article rather than the misleadingly abstract 'four quadrant' schema, which isn't sufficiently general to covers all decision table formats anyway. The phrase "balanced decision table" demands a definition, but none is provided (and it is an inessential reference anyway, like much of the varied, competing, and obscure terminology advanced by different proponents of decision tables back in the 1960s and 70s).

Unless there are objections or alternative suggestions, I propose to make major changes or perhaps do a complete rewrite along the above lines. -- Airsplit (talk) 08:35, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling and Grammar

[edit]

This contains a number of mistakes of spelling and grammar. It also doesn't flow very well with the rest of the article. I don't know enough about decision tables to correct this, but someone in the know should. I assume: "causes" should be "clauses" "serinal" should be "serial" —Preceding unsigned comment added by MrTwitchy (talkcontribs) 10:34, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

MrTwitchy: I have removed that paragraph, which was indeed pointless and unintelligible.-- Airsplit (talk) 08:35, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Order of actions

[edit]

The order of actions may vary from rule to rule. Unsolved problem?
