Removed the deletion recommendation. There's no reason to believe that an assault rifle was used in the shooting.

There is. See the source I listed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sub619 (talkcontribs) 23:50, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A long gun is not necessarily an assault rifle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.69.241.250 (talk) 23:59, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The original version said assault rifle, but in any case that was no reason to remove the PROD, since there was another reason given: that it was a routine crime. So this now will be taken to AFD.TheLongTone (talk) 06:16, 25 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If the 2012 Montreal shooting can have an article, why can't this one? This shooting is arguably more notable as it is in wake of a series of shootings in the United States. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.153.117.250 (talk) 17:50, 25 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting this article would be a mistake. Thought there are many shootings throughout the nation, this has a very unique aspect to it in that Firefighters were the target. The shooter used arson solely to lure firefighters into range to kill them. There are few documented cases of arson being used in this way, and this alone justifies this article staying visible. Additionally, the ramifications of firefighters needing to slow way down on structure fire because of risk from an assassin is huge. The fire service has worked hard for over 40 years reducing deaths to citizens because of smoke inhalation as house fires. If this shooting is the start of a trend, firefighters will need to wait for law enforcement to clear streets before entering. This delay, even if just a few minutes will cause a an increase to both civillian fire deaths and insurance claims. 2602:306:CF72:6BB0:ADC3:7B92:111F:AEBE (talk) 21:10, 25 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reaction

[edit]

I added material from the NY SAFE Act to clarify and show that this shooting was notable in part for its reaction; the Penal law was changed in part due to this shooting. Bearian (talk) 23:35, 17 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
