Baggy Shanker is a British Labour and Co-operative Party politician who has been Member of Parliament for Derby South since 2024.[2][3] He was elected Derby City Council leader in 2023, making him the first Sikh council leader in Derby.[4][5]

Controversies

Baggy Shanker narrowly lost the leadership of Derby City Council in a vote of no confidence held in June 2024 over his handling of an incinerator in his ward of Sinfin. Shanker and his fellow Labour councillors accused the opposition parties of using the vote of no confidence as a way of discrediting his General Election campaign for the Derby South parliamentary seat.
