Across the River and into the Trees is a 2024 film produced by Tribune pictures of London directed by Paula Ortiz and written by Peter Flannery based on the 1950 novel of the same name by Ernest Hemingway. It stars Liev Schreiber and Matilda De Angelis alongside Josh Hutcherson and Danny Huston. The film previewed at the Sun Valley Film Festival on March 30, 2022. Based on the last full-length novel Hemingway published in his lifetime, Across The River and Into The Trees captures a fleeting moment of immortality where time stands still. The story contains the great Hemingway themes of love, war, youth and age.

Premise[edit]

WWII, American Army Col. Richard Cantwell, is a bona fide war hero who faces news of his terminal illness with stoic disregard. Determined to spend his weekend in quiet solitude, he commandeers a military driver to facilitate what is likely a final hunting trip and visit to his old haunts in Venice. As Cantwell's plans begin to unravel, a chance encounter with a young countess begins to kindle in him the hope of renewal.

Cast[edit]

Production[edit]

In 2016, Pierce Brosnan, Isabella Rossellini, and María Valverde joined the cast of a feature film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's Across the River and into the Trees, with Martin Campbell set to direct from a screenplay by Peter Flannery.[1][2] In September 2020, Paula Ortiz replaced Campbell as director, every role was recast, and Liev Schreiber, Matilda De Angelis, Laura Morante, Javier Cámara, and Giancarlo Giannini joined the cast.[3] In November, Josh Hutcherson was added to the cast, with Danny Huston joining the following year in February.[4][5] Principal photography for the film was scheduled to begin in Venice in October 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy with cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe.[6] On March 3, 2021, it was reported that production had concluded and that editing would be done by Kate and Stuart Baird.[7]

Release[edit]

The film previewed at the Sun Valley Film Festival on March 30, 2022.[8] It saw a limited release in Spain on October 11, 2023 in order to meet EU incentive criteria.[9]

In May 2023, Bleecker Street acquired the North American distribution rights with plans for a fall 2023 theatrical release but in May 2024, Level 33 Entertainment acquired the North American distribution rights, setting an August 2024 theatrical release date.
