Production[]
After the final episode for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier aired, The Hollywood Reporter reported that a fourth Captain America film was officially in development at Marvel Studios.[15]
On August 18, 2021, Deadline reported that Anthony Mackie had closed a deal to star in the film.[16] That same day, it was reported that the film would begin production in May 2022 in Atlanta.[17] On July 8, 2022, Julius Onah was hired to direct the film.[18] The film was originally titled Captain America: New World Order[19]. However, by June 5, 2023, Anthony Mackie posted a behind-the-scenes photo from set, revealing the film title had been changed to Captain America: Brave New World.[20]
Filming began on March 20, 2023[21], and was wrapped up on June 30, 2023.[22]
Casting[]
On October 13, 2022, it was reported that Harrison Ford was cast as Thaddeus Ross in the film, replacing the late William Hurt.[6]
On February 13, 2024, during a panel at SBIFF 2024, Mark Ruffalo confirmed that he would return as Hulk in the film.[13] In the following month, Anthony Mackie revealed that Sebastian Stan would not be reprising his role as Bucky Barnes for the film, despite previous reports on the matter.[23]
Release[]
The film was originally scheduled for release on May 3, 2024. By June 13, 2023, Disney announced they had pushed back the film's release date to July 26, 2024, taking over the release date from Thunderbolts*.[24] By November, the film was again pushed back to February 14, 2025.[1]
Trivia[]
- This will be the first Captain America film not to feature Chris Evans as Steve Rogers.
- This will be the second film to turn a superhero trilogy into a tetralogy; the first being Thor: Love and Thunder, followed by Spider-Man 4.
- The original movie title, Captain America: New World Order referenced the series premiere of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, with both sharing the same name. The new title, Brave New World, is a reference to the famous Aldous Huxley novel of the same name, which in turn was taken from the William Shakespeare play The Tempest.
- This film marks the return of Betty Ross (original played by Liv Tyler.) and Samuel Sterns since The Incredible Hulk.
- Harrison Ford makes his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in this film as Thaddeus Ross, taking over from William Hurt after the former's death in 2022.
- It is also the first film where a character is portrayed by a new actor, following an actor's death (the character T'Challa was originally going to be recast for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, until it was decided to honor the character following Chadwick Boseman's passing in 2020).
- Sam makes a subtle remark to the role of the Thaddeus Ross recasting. Sam comments "I'm still getting used to the new look", to which Ross (now played by Harrison Ford, replacing William Hurt) comments that he was told to lose the moustache. This is also a reference to Iron Man 2, when Don Cheadle replaced Terrence Howard in the role of James "Rhodey" Rhodes/War Machine. Rhodey commented "Look, it's me. I'm here. Lets move on" to Tony in that film, also as a subtle reference to the recasting.
- This marks Sam Wilson's film debut as the title character, Captain America.
- The first look was released on April 11, 2024.[2]
- If Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes don't appear in the film, there will have been no character who appeared in all Captain America films. The only characters who appeared in all three previous films are Rogers, Barnes and the Watcher Informant. However, since Stan Lee died in 2018, the Informant obviously won't appear.
- In the first trailer, footage was shown of Isaiah Bradley shooting Thaddeus Ross, but this was removed when the trailer was re-released on July 23, 2024.[25]
- This is the first appearance of Sam Wilson and Thaddeus Ross since their respective appearances in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and Black Widow. Both projects were released in 2021.
