Description (last modified by SergeyBiryukov)

Since the original ticket #50988 was closed and the issue wasnt resolved and there is no expectation of a solution so im creating a new ticket, since this is a big issue that has no proper solution, install plugins or edit functions.php is not a proper way to fix a problem.

WordPress 5.5 has introduced long-awaited and welcome auto-updates for themes and plugins.

However, as I run several sites with different themes and plugins, I am getting frequent (and unnecessary) emails about auto-updates.

These emails need to be optional, not mandatory. By all means, turn on email notifications by default, but please provide the admin with an option to disable the auto-update notifications.

Thank you

Hi, welcome to WordPress Trac and thank you for opening this ticket,

While there is no plan to add any admin option for this for now, let's discuss this ticket during our next core-auto-updates meeting. For your information, the current plan for WP 5.6 would probably rather be to work on less notifications (only failures, for example).

Thanks again for opening this ticket,
Jb

Given all the previous discussion, I would make one amendment to the request: To make the notifications "off except for errors" by default.

Suggest this for 5.5.2, as it was a kind of oversight, AFIK, in 5.5 to send email for even completely successful updates, as it somewhat defeats the purpose "install, mark auto update and forget" principle behind the introduction of auto-updates.

As I have yet to have an update fail, does WordPress core send email notifications for failures?

Just thinking as a work around I may setup a Gmail rule to filter these out in the hope I only filter out successful updates as these emails are driving me crazy.

For a workaround, install the plugin Disable Plugin Autoupdate Emails. It disables emails for successful updates, but allows emails for failed updates.
