"Update WordPress" link on Dashboard links to major version, not minor version

Description (last modified by SergeyBiryukov)

Using 5.1.1, on the Dashboard. When a new version of WordPress core is released, the link takes you to the page for 5.0, even though a page for 5.2.1 exists. See images.

I suggest that if the link has the anchor text "WordPress 5.2.1" then it should link to the minor version page, and from a usability point of view, if I'm on v5.1.1 and 5.2.1 is available, there's no point linking me to 5.0, as I would already know what these changes are. Linking to 5.2.1 lets me see what the changes are (i.e. the specific version history of bugs that are fixed in this specific release), so I can make my decision as to when to plan my upgrade. Linking to 5.0 doesn't let me do this, nor is there any link on the 5.0 page which will take me o the changes contained in 5.2.1, so I have to go work out how to find that information myself.

As appears on Dashboard: https://ibb.co/3ThC33W

Following the link takes me to: https://ibb.co/x5fs8pf

Even though the far more useful page is available here: https://ibb.co/RSwG5jN

I'm listing this as a bug and not an enhancement because any link containing the words "Wordpress 5.2.1" should take me to a page containing info for v5.2.1, and it doesn't.

I found another instance of the same bug, on the Updates page itself: https://ibb.co/qxMKb1C

This links to the same 5.0 page.

Hi @qaws, welcome to WordPress Trac! Thanks for the report.

This appears to be the same issue as in #47346.

Are you using the en_GB, English (UK) locale? If so, the issue should be resolved once you click the Update Translations button at the bottom of Dashboard → Updates screen.

Bug #47346 is to do with the release notes after the site has updated. This bug is to do with linking to the release notes before the site has updated. I don't know if it will use the same translation string for this process; we'll have to wait until the next update to see if the fix for #47346 fixed this bug too.

Replying to qaws:

Bug #47346 is to do with the release notes after the site has updated. This bug is to do with linking to the release notes before the site has updated.

Good catch! Looks like the WordPress 5.1.x project had incorrect translation of this string as well. I have fixed the translation, a new language pack file will be available in ~1 hour.

Closing the ticket, as it's not an issue with WordPress core. Thanks again for the report!
