English: Earl of Shaftesbury is a title in the English peerage created in 1661 for Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury. The Ashley-Cooper family is descended from Sir Anthony Ashley, Baronet of Wimborne St Giles and Sir John Cooper, 1st Baron of Rockbourne. Ashley-Cooper made his home in Wimborne St Giles, a village in east Dorset, England, situated on Cranborne Chase seven miles north of Wimborne Minster, north of Poole. The village has a population of 366 (2001).
