STR:

  • Open https://smile.amazon.com/gp/video/storefront. You don't need to be logged into an Amazon Prime account.
  • Ctrl+click or middle mouse button click at least half a dozen movie thumbnails to open them in new tabs.
  • Then press Ctrl+W to quickly close all the new tabs.
  • After a few have been closed, I see the CDM crash infobar at the top of the page.
  • However, no crash shows up in about:crashes even if the submit option is chosen on the crash infobar.

Notes:

  • I had to open and close a lot of tabs to get the crash.
  • I've reproed this on Win 10, and have heard this also happens on Win 11. Unless we get info to the contrary, my guess is this is not platform specific.
  • I'm still able to get other GMP crashes to show the same crash prompt, and they do appear in about:crashes. E.g. setting the media.gmp.plugin.crash pref to true while a Widevine GMP is active does seem to produce a report.

I am able to reproduce this CDM crash in ESR 91 with Widevine version 4.10.2449.0 and Firefox 97-101 with Widevine version 4.10.2391.0. I'm testing on Windows 11.

Crash Signature: [@ mozilla::gmp::GMPChild::RecvCrashPluginNow ]

I wasn't able to reproduce this crash on macOS (version 11.6.4), so this might be a Windows-specific bug.

I am able to reproduce this CDM crash in ESR 91 with Widevine version 4.10.2449.0 and Firefox 97-101 with Widevine version 4.10.2391.0. I'm testing on Windows 11.

Thanks for testing this. Could you confirm that ESR 91 is getting 4.10.2449.0 and if so, could let me know what update channel you're on? It's not a big deal, but we're doing a roll out of that CDM currently and I don't see it on my ESR, nor do we expect it to have reached ESR yet.

Yes. I get CDM version 4.10.2391.0 in ESR 91.8.0, Release 99.0.1, and Beta 100. I get CDM version 4.10.2449.0 in Nightly 101.

I'm able to reproduce the crash using either CDM version, so this is presumably a Firefox bug.

I've run into the “The WidevineCdm plugin has crashed” info bar message on Amazon prime. Tested on macOS 12.1 with the latest Nightly 101.0a1 (2022-04-25). Steps and the actual result are pretty similar with the ones provided when the issue was submitted.

I filed bug 1768038 specifically about the Amazon Prime crashes. We should use this bug for the crash reporter failing to submit crash reports for the GMP crashes.

With FF 125.0.3, the WidevineCdm plugin still crashes on https://www.free-ligue1.fr/ videos.

Note: the platform is set to Windows, but in my case, the crash occurs under Linux.
