I had a Google Hangouts session to interview a candidate, but Firefox could only detect my laptop's integrated webcam, not my external Logitech C930e webcam.

I had to use Chrome to conduct my interview.

In my device manager, I noticed that the integrated webcam is classified under "Cameras," while my external webcam is classified under "Imaging Devices." Are we perhaps missing a possible device category when enumerating devices?

Aaron, do you get a getUserMedia (gUM) prompt for video devices from Hangouts? If you try with another site, such as this one, do you get a gUM prompt, and if so, does it fail to show the appropriate devices?

Has this ever worked in the past?

The first step here is to isolate if this problem is specific to Hangouts (or is it Google Meet?), so please test the link in comment 1.

Web sites are allowed to request specific devices using constraints, so you might need to visit Hangouts settings to pick a different device inside Hangouts. FWIW I've recently experienced some app logic bugs in Google Meet, which I attribute to recently having migrated my system to a new laptop, so I'm interested in the result here.

Interesting. The prompt from this link did include my external webcam in the list.

I don't know, this is the only time that I've tried this.

I guess it was Google Meet, judging by the name in the link.

Hi there, try the following steps:

  • Check physical connections and USB ports.
  • Verify webcam recognition in system settings.
  • Restart Firefox.
  • Check and grant camera permissions for the specific site.
  • Clear browser cache in Firefox settings.
  • Ensure Firefox is up to date.
  • Update webcam drivers from the manufacturer's website.
  • Test the webcam in other applications and browsers.
  • Restart your computer.
-Review firewall/antivirus settings; temporarily disable them for testing.
