Barbie: The Movie

Barbie is a film released in theaters on July 21, 2023.[1] It is the first ever live-action Barbie movie. The film is directed by Greta Gerwig, and co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. It stars Margot Robbie as Barbie, and Ryan Gosling as Ken.[2]

Plot[]

The film opens with a parody of “2001: A Space Odyssey”, where it is shown, through the voice of the narrator that the Barbie doll has been around since the dawn of girlhood. Random little girls are seen shattering their typical baby dolls in favor of the Barbie.

In the world of Barbie Land, there are multiple Barbies and multiple Kens, as well as Allan and a pregnant doll named Midge. There is a President Barbie, Physicist Barbie, Doctor Barbie, Writer Barbie, Diplomat Barbie, Journalist Barbie, Mermaid Barbies, among others. The Kens live dependent on their relationships to their Barbies. The main Barbie goes about her day enjoying her life in Barbie Land with her Ken and with her fellow Barbies. Original Ken has a rivalry with Tourist Ken and they threaten to “beach off” one another. The Barbies and Kens all have a dance party to celebrate how great life in Barbie Land is, until Stereotypical Barbie comments on if anyone thinks about dying, completely killing the vibe. Later on, Barbie starts to notice strange things going on in her life, including her heels now touching the ground and her skin having cellulite. She is advised by the other Barbies to visit Weird Barbie, who has had her hair cut, her face drawn on, and she does splits. She explains to Barbie that there might be something going on in the real world with the girl who plays with her, and she must set out to find out what is going on with her. Barbie drives her way out of Barbie Land to the "real world", accompanied by a stowaway Ken.

The duo manage to arrive at Venice Beach, wherein they get into trouble with law enforcement after Barbie punches a pedestrian who sexually assaults her by slapping her buttocks. After they are released from temporary custody, Barbie goes off to try and find her owner. Barbie takes a moment to sit on a bench and see visions of a girl happily playing with her, until the girl ends up becoming less joyful, causing Barbie to shed tears. She then looks to her side and sees an old woman sitting next to her. Barbie tells her she is beautiful, and the woman says she knows. Based on her visions, Barbie is directed to a high school girl named Sasha, who says she no longer plays with Barbies because they incorporate unrealistic beauty standards. Meanwhile, after Barbie and Ken split off, Ken ends up learning about the patriarchy, seeing it as something positive. Barbie ends up at Mattel, the company that makes Barbies. The CEO learns of her presence in the real world, which is overheard by an employee named Gloria, who is also Sasha’s mother. Barbie ends up in the boardroom of employees, and the CEO tries to convince her to go back into a life-sized box to fix everything. She nearly agrees before changing her mind and making a run for it. After Gloria picks up Sasha, she finds Barbie, who is being chased by the CEO and his subordinates. Barbie then learns that Gloria is responsible for her current existential crisis due to Sasha being more moody around her lately. Barbie guides Gloria and Sasha back to Barbie Land, while the guys from Mattel try to find a way to track her down.

When the three arrive in Barbie Land, they find that Ken has brought the patriarchy there, renaming the place “Kendom” and has now indoctrinated the other Kens into behaving more obnoxiously and more “bro” like, causing the rest of the Barbies to become more subservient to them. This extends to the real world where Ken’s change to Barbie’s dream house, a “Mojo Dojo Casa House”, starts selling well. While Barbie tries to appeal to Ken and get him to change his mind, he refuses because he now feels more valued than he did before going to the real world with her. Barbie becomes depressed and feels she is no longer perfect as she was made to be. Gloria and Sasha take her car and leave her when she tells them to go home. A commercial for “Depressed Barbie” plays before Weird Barbie comes to get her friend. On their way out of Barbie Land, Gloria and Sasha are startled to find Allan has stowed away with them since he is already sick of the Kens having taken over. A group of Kens are building a wall (very poorly) to stop anyone from getting in or out of Barbie Land, and Allan begins to fight them all by himself. Sasha then decides they should go back to Barbie Land and help Barbie because Gloria cares about her, and Sasha expresses support for her mother’s ideas.

Gloria and Sasha return to find Barbie in Weird Barbie’s dream house, along with some discontinued Barbies and Kens. Gloria talks to Barbie, who is still depressed, and gives an impassioned speech about the standards women have to deal with in the real world. This helps snap Barbie out of her funk, as some of the other Barbies also come to their senses and devise a plan to get the Kens to change their minds. Each Barbie tries to appeal to their Kens’ egos before jumping to other Kens to make them jealous and fight each other, culminating in a dance-off and Ken’s heartfelt “I’m Just Ken” ballad. Ken goes to Barbie and admits that he feels he is defined by his relationship to her, as it’s “Barbie AND Ken”, and not “just Ken”. Barbie apologizes for making him feel that way, but she also does not want to be known as just his girlfriend in Barbie Land. The Mattel guys arrive in Barbie Land, just as the spirit of Ruth Handler, the creator of Barbie, appears to speak to her. Ruth tells Barbie that while humans might have an end, her story does not have to. She encourages her to choose her own destiny and holds her hands. Barbie closes her eyes and envisions other women and mothers before making her choice.

Later on, Barbie rejoins Gloria and Sasha in the real world, now going by the name Barbara Handler. The two drop her off at a building, where she makes an appointment to see a gynecologist.

The 9 dolls were released on June 1, 2023.[3] More dolls were later released, including dolls of Weird Barbie and Dua Lipa.

Pitch and Announcement[]

Mattel invited a small group of producers to pitch Barbie movies. Sony won the rights when screenwriter Jenny Bicks and production company Parkes+MacDonald delivered a pitch for a live-action movie to Mattel. Deadline reported that "Barbie has been part of merchandise packages that span over 150 careers, and Bicks and Parkes and MacDonald won the rights from Mattel when they plugged into that with their pitch for a contemporary tale. (...) Once those producers won that bake-off with the help of their deal with ImageNation, [Amy] Pascal moved swiftly to lock in Sony with a production commitment." Amy Pascal and Hannah Minghella oversaw the deal.

The movie would be a contemporary comedy aimed at Barbie fans of all ages. Deadline noted that Barbie has "always been about female empowerment" and that script-writer Jenny Bicks was "a strong writer from a woman's perspective". In the film, Barbie would use her personal and professional skills to improve other people's lives. Deadline compared the concept to "almost like a modern-day Mary Poppins." Minghella told Deadline, "We've always thought that the Barbie story had great potential, but a universe of possibilities opened up when Jenny, Walter and Laurie brought us their unexpected, clever, and truly funny concept. It captures everything that has made Barbie a classic for generation after generation while also standing on its own, establishing Barbie as a truly original screen character."[4]

On April 23, 2014, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced in a press release that they would create a live-action Barbie movie. Parkes+MacDonald were the producers, Marc Resteghnini and Julia Pistor were the executive producers, and Jenny Bicks was writing the script. Production was supposed to begin before the end of 2014. Mattel's Tim Kilpin said, "Barbie has entertained children and inspired their imagination and creativity for more than 50 years. Now is the right time in Barbie's celebrated history for her to star in a live-action, contemporary comedy that brings her playful personality to life for generations of fans."[5]

Treatment and Script[]

On March 19, 2014, producer Walter F. Parkes contacted Amy Pascal about the movie treatment. He said that Mattel had approved the title Plastic Fantastic, and that "the treatment lays out the movie, but it's tonally much too tame — it needs the hip, comic self-consciousness of Lego in a live action context. Maggie, our heroine, has to be edgier and more original — and should enjoy going into Barbie's world along with our audience. We also need to do more with the little girl character — it is Barbie after all. But as I said — this was about giving Mattel a document that laid out the tonal perimeters of what we can do with the brand. I wanted them to pre-approve a basic tonal approach so we wouldn't have a problem later. As I said — it turns out that they were so happy that they want to pay for the draft – but I think we need a partner going forward."[6]

On March 21, 2014, Sony's Doug Belgrad described the movie as being inspired by Enchanted, Mary Poppins, The Devil Wears Prada, and Legally Blonde.[7] Sony's Dwight Caines compared the film to Splash and Big.[8] On March 23, 2014, Sony closed the deal with Mattel.[9]

On April 23, 2014, when the movie was announced, it was reported that Jenny Bicks was writing a script after helping to pitch the film to Mattel.[10] On April 23, 2014, when the movie was announced, there were no cast members attached to the film. The initial storyline would follow Barbie as she used her personal and professional skills to improve people's lives. Mike Fleming Jr of Deadline wrote, "that storyline allows for the discovery of a young actress to play the title character, and young cast to play Ken and Barbie's best friend, putting stars around them that can change in subsequent movies."[11]

On March 4, 2015, Deadline reported that Diablo Cody was going to rewrite the script. It was also announced that Amy Pascal would be a producer on the film. Fellow producer Walter F. Parkes said, "Diablo's unconventionality is just what Barbie needs. It signals we're going for a legitimately contemporary tone. We're bringing her on because she had great ideas, but even more importantly, she truly loves Barbie.[12]

On September 23, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter interviewed Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. The Hollywood Reporter interviewer asked, "You're making a film adaptation of the toy Barbie at Sony. Can she be embraced by feminists?" MacDonald responded, "When she was created, a young girl's only choice was playing with a baby doll — what more says your only reason to be is to be a mother and take care of a baby? Barbie was independent. She was more feminist than we would think. Barbie can have 10 careers. So is that bad? We get Diablo Cody's script in two or three weeks, and we'll go from there."[13]

On December 15, 2015, Deadline reported that Sony Pictures was "securing three writers to draft scripts. The first is by Lindsey Beer, the second by Bert Royal; and a third by Hilary Winston. This is happening fast, but Beer's and Royal's deals have been sealed."[14]

On December 6, 2016, Deadline reported that comedian Amy Schumer was in negotiations to play Barbie. Schumer's Barbie would live in Barbieland with other Barbie characters. The plot would be reminiscent of other films with "fish-out-of-water" plots such as Splash and Big, with Schumer's Barbie not fitting in while living in Barbieland. After being kicked out for being eccentric and not perfect enough, Schumer would have an adventure in the real world and then return to Barbieland to save it. After saving Barbieland, Barbie would have "gained the realization that perfection comes on the inside, not the outside, and that the key to happiness is belief in oneself, free of the obligation to adhere to some unattainable standard of perfection."

Schumer became interested after Sony's Tom Rothman personally brought her Hilary Winston's script and pitched it to Schumer. Schumer agreed after reading the script, but she and her sister Kim Caramele would rewrite it. The film would be rated PG and incorporate the new Barbie body types that had been introduced earlier in the year.[15] The film would also be partly animated.[16] Schumer later dropped out, citing scheduling conflicts.[17] Years later, Schumer revealed that the real reason she dropped out was because had written Barbie as an ambitious inventor, but the studio asked that her invention be a high heel made of Jell-O. They also sent her a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes to celebrate. Schumer told The Hollywood Reporter, "[The studio] definitely didn't want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it (...) The idea that [high heels are] just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, 'You've got the wrong gal.'"[18]

On July 24, 2017, it was reported that Anne Hathaway was in negotiations to play Barbie. Hathaway wanted Alethea Jones to direct, and Olivia Milch was brought in to rewrite the script in the hope of Hathaway agreeing to do the film.[19] On August 24, 2017, Nylon published an interview with Jones, who confirmed she was directing and said, "It's in the very early stages, so I can't comment too much, but already I'm working with these really powerful creatives, and for the last few months, I've been meeting with them and working on the script."[20]

On January 9, 2019, it was officially announced that Margot Robbie was playing Barbie. She would be co-producing the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, alongside Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara of LuckyChap Entertainment.[21] On December 18, 2020, co-producers Robbie, Ackerley and McNamara were interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter. Robbie said, "we like the things that feel a little left of center. Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, 'Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,' but our goal is to be like, 'Whatever you're thinking, we're going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn't know you wanted.'" When the interviewer noted that Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach writing the film "subverts expectations", Robbie replied, "Yes. Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we're really firing on all cylinders."[22] Greta Gerwig later said Noah Baumbach was unsure about writing Barbie, but Gerwig convinced him to.[23][24]

On May 16, 2022, Variety reported that Simu Liu said he auditioned for the movie after his agent encouraged him to. Liu said his agent told him, "If I could stake my career on any one script, it's the 'Barbie' script. I really think you should do it." Liu sent in a self-tape audition and then met Greta Gerwig in person. Liu described the film as "wild", "incredibly unique" and "crazy."[25]

On May 18, 2022, Margot Robbie's alleged Letterboxd account was found. The account had a list of movies, and the list was titled "Watch for Barbie". The list included the movies The Young Girls of Rochefort, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Splash, Puberty Blues and The Truman Show. The account was quickly deleted after its discovery went viral.[26][27] On July 5, 2022, Emma Mackey was quoted saying about the movie, "It's great to do comedy (...) Barbie is light and funny and silly and American and pink."[28] On July 12, 2022, in an interview with Ryan Gosling for Entertainment Tonight, he coined the term "Kenergy" and said he could not reveal much about the movie "otherwise Mattel will come in and box me up." However, he added that, "Ken's got no money, he’s got no job, he’s got no car, he’s got no house. He's going through some stuff."[29][30]

On July 19, 2022, Issa Rae was interviewed by Today. She said she couldn't say anything about the movie or her character, but she told Today, "I was like, '[Greta Gerwig's pitch] sounds crazy, but OK. Let me just read the script.' When you read the script, you’re like, 'Oh, I get it!' It's very funny, and it's just very specific to [Gerwig]."[31]

On a July 22, 2022 appearance of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Gosling said Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach's screenplay was "the best script I've ever read."[32] On July 25, 2022, Margot Robbie told The Mirror, "I think people had a preconceived idea about what the movie would be. Then, when it was ­announced Greta was ­directing, all these ideas went out the window. Bringing Barbie to life was something I just couldn't say no to. It's a fun movie – a comedy – but it's also going to have aspects people don't expect. I don't think Barbie can be accused of being a dumb blonde as she has been a surgeon, a vet and a pilot so, if anything, she is a pioneer."[33]

On August 5, 2022, The Sun exclusively revealed that the movie had a "politically-charged script". The article said, "Instead of a fluffy, upbeat love story, the movie will shine a light on social issues — tackling feminism, misogyny and other gender issues. (...) The Sun can reveal for the first time how the film will show Barbie and Ken, played by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, living in Barbie Land where women reign supreme. Mermaid Barbie, President Barbie and other females rule the land while the male Ken dolls are little more than pretty accessories. But Margot's character crosses over into the real world with Ken, where she is gobsmacked to discover misogyny, a lack of equal pay and even — shock horror — a male President. When they return, Ken tells the other male dolls what he has seen and urges them to fight back and take charge. The two genders end up fighting for their place in Barbie Land."[34]

A film insider told The Sun, "Barbie is a fun comedy and the producers have made every effort for it to have a PG rating so it is suitable for kids. But there are some serious social themes about equality, misogyny and feminism which they hope will give the film some credibility. It won't at all be what people are expecting because Barbie has typically been seen as a bimbo. They want to change that perception with this film to show little girls and boys how important equality is. People are used to seeing men in charge and women fighting for equal rights, whereas in this case it will be the other way around. But it remains to be seen whether that will make it an enjoyable watch."[35]

On August 29, 2022, Simu Liu was on the "WTF with Marc Maron Podcast". Liu said, "It's one of the best scripts I've ever read. I think it'll surprise a lot of people because I think a lot of people get cynical when they see Mattel or they see Barbie. The first thought I had after reading the script was how did the hell did they get Mattel to sign off on this, because this is not the kind of movie that corporate overlords sign off on. This is the type of movie that I love, unabashedly. It's smart, it's subversive, and it's meta, and it makes fun of itself. How did they understand it enough to green light it? I think that's props to not only Greta but also to Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley who produced it."[36][37]

In September 2022, Emma Mackey told Total Film, "It's pretty special. It's one of the best scripts all of us had read."[38] In October 2022, America Ferrera told People that the film would go against people's expectations and that she couldn't talk about her character.[39] In November 2022, Simu Liu said, "'Weird' is a great way to describe it, but weird in the best possible way. Before I read the script, I had an agent that was like 'You need to do Barbie, I bet my career on this.' Basically, he was like, 'Fire me if this movie doesn't turn out well,' and I was like 'Ok, dude.' Learned Greta [Gerwig] was a part of it and instantly was like, 'Show me the script right now, please.' I read it and it’s one of the best scripts I've ever read, probably the best script I've ever read. If only you knew. It's absolutely bonkers and it’s absolutely weird and fun, heartfelt and all of the things. I'm trying to dance around giving away actual plot details because trust me, you don’t want that; you want to be surprised in the movie theater. It was such a pleasure to shoot, a lot of pink. I'm glad we kicked off an entire fashion trend."[40] The fashion trend was "Barbiecore", which began when Margot Robbie was pictured on set in June 2022.[41]

In November 2022, Will Ferrell told The Wall Street Journal: "It is, in my humble opinion, the ultimate example of high art and low art. It's a loving homage to the brand and, at the same time, couldn't be more satirical — just an amazing comment on male patriarchy and women in society and why Barbie's criticized and yet why every little girl still wants to play with Barbie. Boy, when I read it, I was like, 'This is fantastic.'"[42][43]

On November 25, 2022, an interview with Greta Gerwig was released on the Dua Lipa: At Your Service podcast. Gerwig was "excited" about writing the movie, but also said, "It was terrifying. There's something about starting from that place where it's like 'well, anything is possible.' It felt like vertigo starting to write it. Like, where do you even begin? What would be the story? That feeling that I had was knowing that it would be really interesting terror. Usually that's where the best stuff is. I am terrified of that. Anything where you’re like, 'This could be a career-ender,' then you're like, 'OK, I probably should do it." Gerwig described Mattel as "amazing partners" who gave her "trust and freedom", and she also credited producers Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley for making sure she was able to execute her vision.[44]

In December 2022, Margot Robbie said of the movie, "I've been working on it for about four or five years now — it's a LuckyChap project. And we went after Greta. There were maybe three people that we would want to make a Barbie movie with, and I was like, if she says no... So thank God she said yes. She's just brilliant." Robbie also said there would be dreamhouses in the movie.[45]

Noah Baumbach spent years working on Barbie along with his movie White Noise. In December 2022, Baumbach compared the two movies by stating to Entertainment Weekly, "I wrote White Noise, and then, once I had that in a place where I thought, okay, I've done a lot of the heavy-lifting, Greta and I started work on Barbie. So that was all sort of happening during that first year of the pandemic. They're kind of connected in a funny. The execution is different but there are aspects of the world of White Noise that actually informed some of how we looked at Barbie." Gerwig added, "Everything got written in 2020, they very much feel like they came out of the same place in a way. I mean they physically came out of the same address. But I think it contributed, him working on that and us working on Barbie together. (...) I can feel how [White Noise and Barbie are] connected, but I don't know if anyone else will see it."[46]

In April 2023, Margot Robbie told BAFTA, "The first time I read the Barbie script, my reaction was, 'Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day because they are never going to let us make this movie.' But they did." She could not reveal any details.[47] Issa Rae was also unable to give any details.[48] At CinemaCon 2023, Greta Gerwig said, "Margot is the person who invited me on this journey," Gerwig said. "It was such an incredibly joyful experience, writing and making this movie...When I was writing it with Noah, there was just a point where we're just making each other laugh all the time and then we got to the end and we started making each other cry."[49]

On March 21, 2014, Sony's Doug Belgrad wrote that they were interested in Paul Feig, Will Gluck, and David Frankel as potential directors.[50]

On December 6, 2016, when Amy Schumer was in talks to play Barbie, it was reported that Sony was looking for a female director. The short list was rumored to include Thea Sharrock.[51] Schumer later dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.[52] On July 24, 2017, it was reported that Anne Hathaway was in negotiations to play Barbie. Hathaway wanted Alethea Jones to direct.[53] On August 24, 2017, Jones confirmed that she was directing. She told Nylon, "It's in the very early stages, so I can't comment too much, but already I'm working with these really powerful creatives, and for the last few months, I've been meeting with them and working on the script. The other day I said to Naomi Scott and Julie Rudd [producer and writer of Jones' film Fun Mom Dinner] that it doesn't feel foreign to me because Naomi and Julie are these powerful creative strong encouraging women, and that was a first for me, working with that caliber of person. So it was just a very natural transition going into this new movie with that type of person, there was no culture shock."[54]

On January 28, 2019, after rumors circulated that Patty Jenkins could be directing the film, Jenkins said, "I love Barbie as well, and see an interesting thing. It's something we talked about, it's not something I'm planning on doing. My schedule - I'm not really available to do it any time soon. It's fun to talk about it; I'm not the person directing it at the moment."[55]

On July 15, 2019, it was reported that Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach would co-write the screenplay, and Gerwig was in talks to direct.[56] Gerwig said, "For us, the Barbie movie should definitely have a message of female empowerment, and that you can dream and be anything you want."[57] On July 9, 2021, it was confirmed that Greta Gerwig would direct the film. In the August 2021 issue of Vogue, it said that Margot Robbie was "prepping for [LuckyChap Entertainment's] biggest project to date, Barbie, about the most controversial 11in of plastic in living memory." Robbie responded, "Right, it comes with a lot of baggage! And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear 'Barbie' and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,' and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they're like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don't...'"[58]

Casting[]

On March 21, 2014, Sony's Doug Belgrad suggested that Margot Robbie would be good for the role as Barbie, or possibly a new actress. He also suggested Tina Fey or Amy Adams could play a character named Maggie.[59]

On April 23, 2014, when the movie was announced, there were no cast members attached to the film. The initial storyline would follow Barbie as she used her personal and professional skills to improve people's lives. Mike Fleming Jr of Deadline wrote, "that storyline allows for the discovery of a young actress to play the title character, and young cast to play Ken and Barbie's best friend, putting stars around them that can change in subsequent movies. Much the way that Marvel has managed its costs with deals that call for options on future films as they create stars with their superhero movies, this seems a way to keep costs manageable for another live-action series meant to span multiple films."[60]

On December 6, 2016, Deadline reported that comedian Amy Schumer was in negotiations to play Barbie. Schumer's Barbie would live in Barbieland with other Barbie characters. Due to being eccentric and not perfect enough, Barbie would be kicked out of Barbieland. She would then spend time in the "real world", before returning to Barbieland to save it. Barbie would have a new perspective on life after saving Barbieland.[61]

In response to backlash over the casting, Schumer posted a photo of herself in a swimsuit on Instagram, with the description:

Very very honored to be nominated for 2 Grammys and to be considered to play an important and evolving icon. Is it fat shaming if you know you're not fat and have zero shame in your game? I don't think so. I am strong and proud of how I live my life and say what I mean and fight for what I believe in and I have a blast doing it with the people I love. Where's the shame? It's not there. It's an illusion. When I look in the mirror I know who I am. I'm a great friend, sister, daughter and girlfriend. I'm a badass comic headlining arenas all over the world and making TV and movies and writing books where I lay it all out there and I'm fearless like you can be. Thanks to everyone for the kind words and support and again my deepest sympathy goes out to the trolls who are in more pain than we will ever understand. I want to thank them for making it so evident that I am a great choice. It's that kind of response that let's you know something's wrong with our culture and we all need to work together to change it. Anyone who has ever been bullied or felt bad about yourself I am out there fighting for you, for us. And I want you to fight for yourself too! We need to laugh at the haters and sympathize with them. They can scream as loud as they want. We can't hear them because we are getting shot done. I am proud to lead by example. "I say if I'm beautiful, I say if I'm strong. You will not determine my story. I will."[62]

On March 23, 2017, Variety reported that Schumer had dropped out of the movie. She told Variety, "Sadly, I'm no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts. The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I'm bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen." A Sony spokesperson said in a statement, "We respect and support Amy's decision. We look forward to bringing Barbie to the world and sharing updates on casting and filmmakers soon."[63]

In 2018, Schumer parted ways with her representatives at United Talent Agency because she did not feel fully supported by them, and she felt that she had "disappointed" them by not playing Barbie. In 2022, Schumer revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, "[The studio] definitely didn't want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it." The article stated, "Just how far apart their visions of imperfection were — Schumer had written Barbie as an ambitious inventor; the studio asked that her invention be a high heel made of Jell-O — should have been apparent when she was sent a pair of Manolo Blahniks to celebrate." In response to the pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes, Schumer told The Hollywood Reporter, "The idea that that's just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, 'You've got the wrong gal.'"[64] In June 2023, Amy Schumer appeared on Watch What Happens Live and said the movie looked "awesome" and that she was looking forward to seeing it. She again cited creative differences for her leaving the movie.[65]

On July 7, 2017, New York Times reported that "[Amy] Pascal thinks she has finally cracked Barbie as a live-action comedy; negotiations are underway with an Oscar-winning actress for the tonally tricky title role."[66] On July 24, 2017, it was reported that Anne Hathaway was in negotiations to play Barbie. Hathaway wanted Alethea Jones to direct, and Olivia Milch was brought in to rewrite the script in the hope of Hathaway agreeing to do the film.[67] On July 25, 2017, Amy Schumer posted a selfie on Instagram with the caption, "Hathaway smathaway jkjk she's perfect!! Can't wait to see it!"[68]

On October 5, 2018, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Mattel was partnering with Warner Bros for the film, and Margot Robbie was in talks to play Barbie and produce the film through her co-founded production banner LuckyChap Entertainment.[69] On January 8, 2019, it was announced that Margot Robbie was officially playing Barbie. Robbie said, "Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child's journey to self-discovery. Over the brand's almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president. I'm so honored to take on this role and produce a film that I believe will have a tremendously positive impact on children and audiences worldwide. I can't imagine better partners than Warner Bros and Mattel to bring this film to the big screen."[70] Robbie later said, "I think it's a great opportunity to put some positivity out into the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids."[71] After production wrapped, Margot Robbie told The Wall Street Journal she had played Barbie as a "child" archetype.[72][73]

On July 16, 2019, Fortune reported that Mattel's Ynon Kreiz said the cast would diverse. At Fortune's Brainstorm Tech conference, Kreiz said, "Barbie is the most diverse brand in the toy industry. It's very important for us, it's part of our DNA, to represent consumers whoever they are, wherever they are, and you'll see that also in our movies."[74] On October 22, 2021, it was announced that Ryan Gosling was in negotiations to play Ken.[75] In February 2022, it was announced that America Ferrera,[76] Simu Liu,[77] and Kate McKinnon[78] were part of the the cast. Simu Liu said he auditioned for the movie after his agent encouraged him to. Liu spoke highly of director Greta Gerwig.[79]

In March 2022, it was announced that Ariana Greenblatt,[80] Alexandra Shipp,[81] and Emma Mackey[82] were in the film. In April 2022, it was announced that Will Ferrell (reportedly playing "the CEO of a toy company that may or not be Mattel.")[83],[84], Issa Rae, Michael Cera[85] Hari Nef,[86] Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Ncuti Gatwa, Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya and Jamie Demetriou had joined the cast.[87] It was also announced that Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya and Jamie Demetriou were in the film.[88] On May 18, 2022, New York Times reporter Kyle Buchanan tweeted, "I am hearing incredible BARBIE goss at Cannes. For one, I'm hearing that Ryan Gosling is not the only Ken in the BARBIE film. Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa also play Ken. And, by the same token, Margot Robbie is not the film's only Barbie. Issa Rae and Hari Nef play different Barbies..."[89] His tweets were reported on by The Daily Mail.[90]

On May 18, 2022, it was reported by The Sun that Dua Lipa would be in the movie. An unnamed film insider told The Sun, "Barbie will be a breakthrough part for Dua because there is so much hype around it. Dua is quickly proving there is far more to her than just being a pop star. She has an exciting future ahead of her in films."[91] Mark Ronson later posted on Instagram that Dua Lipa became involved with the movie after he messaged her.[92] Also in May 2022, Ncuti Gatwa hinted that Nicola Coughlan was in the movie.[93] Coughlan later stated that she was a big fan of Greta Gerwig, loved the movie and was only in it very briefly.[94]

In a December 2022 interview for The New York Times, Greta Gerwig said that when filming began, she had a sleepover with Margot Robbie and some other people working on the movie. Ryan Gosling did not participate. Gerwig also said that she invited the cast to watch weekly movie screenings (including His Girl Friday and The Red Shoes) at the Electric Cinema in Notting Hill to give them a better sense of the kind of tone she was trying to achieve in the movie. The movies screenings were to let the cast know that "people have made really wild movies before."[95][96] On July 5, 2022, Empire magazine reported that Emma Mackey said, "Right in the beginning, we had a sleepover for the Barbies, which would involve playing games with Scott [Evans] and Ncuti [Gatwa]."[97]

In an June 2022 episode of The Talk, Ryan Gosling's partner Eva Mendez said she was supportive of his role as Ken,[98] and he later said the support "meant a lot" to him.[99]

In July 2022, Greta Gerwig spoke about Hari Nef's audition tape.[100][101] Nef later said, "When I heard I was cast as a Barbie in the Barbie movie, it looked like I was maybe not going to be able to do the film because of a scheduling conflict. So I wrote Greta and Margot a letter essentially begging them to fudge the schedule a little bit."[102] On July 5, 2022, Deadline exclusively reported that Marisa Abela had joined the cast.[103]

Also, in a July interview with heat magazine, Ryan Gosling said he wanted to use the movie as a way to introduce his daughters to his work as an actor. He said, "Barbie was a way to do that. Not necessarily like I'm making it for them, but it's the first time I think they kind of are understanding, Although they can't for the life them understand why I want to play Ken because nobody plays with Ken! But that's why we must tell his story."[104] On July 21, 2022, it was reported that Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were both paid $12.5 million for the movie,[105] making Margot Robbie the highest paid woman in Hollywood at the time.[106]

On September 14, 2022, People Magazine reported that Saoirse Ronan had intended to appear in the movie, but couldn't due to scheduling conflicts. Saoirse Ronan said, "I was supposed to do a cameo because I live in London and they were [filming] there. There was a whole character I was going to play — another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn't do it. I have texted Margot and Greta and I'm like, 'If you're doing any pick-up [shots], maybe I can just walk through the background?"[107]

At the Unforgettable Gala in December 2022, Simu Liu was interviewed by Vanity Fair. Liu praised the cast's diversity by saying, "I remember very clearly about some of our big intricate dance sequences. Greta was very, very conscientious about who she cast. We were able to cast people of different shapes, sizes, differently abled, to all participate in this dance—all under this message of: You don't have to be blonde, white, or X, Y, Z in order to embody what it means to be a Barbie or a Ken. It's really about finding your inner beauty and owning that part of yourself and being the best possible version of you. (...) I will say, going on set I was never isolated. I felt like I was going to work every day with a cast that really celebrated each other and celebrated each other's differences, no matter where we came from. I think when you watch the movie, you'll see that reflected on the screen." Before getting the part, Liu had told Gerwig about his dance history, which contributed to him getting the role.[108] He also later stated, "The invitation to participate [in the movie is] certainly very humbling. I'm extremely honored to have even been given the opportunity to play in that sandbox with such incredible auteurs every step of the way."[109]

Ritu Arya repeatedly praised Greta Gerwig and her experience making the movie[110][111][112] She revealed to Insider that she didn't get the role she initially auditioned for, but was offered another role instead. In February 2023, Emma Mackey also did so, calling Gerwig her "hero."[113] Also in February, Michael Cera was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter and he praised costume designer Jacqueline Durran.[114]

In March 2023, Ariana Greenblatt was interviewed by Collider and said, "I am so excited for people to see everything that they just are not expecting, the people they aren't expecting, the looks they are not expecting. From the leaks you've seen on Twitter and Instagram and everything is just the smallest little amount that you could possibly think of. (Director) Greta [Gerwig] is so genius and she made this beautiful film. I'm so excited to be a part of it! My character fits in somehow, some way, can't say because it'll spoil something, but just know it's really exciting and I think it's a timeless, really fun movie. So excited for that to come out!"[115] She praised the movie again in an interview with Elle magazine.[116]

On April 4, 2023, The Sun reported that John Cena was playing a merman.[117] Footage of John Cena as a merman was shown a CinemaCon 2023.[118] On April 5, Tasha Ghouri said she got to the final round of auditions as a dancer but was not cast.[119]

In an exclusive interview with Girls Life magazine, Ariana Greenblatt said, "I have to be very careful what I say. I'm definitely the Tom Holland of the Barbie world. Like, I would be the one to spoil it. All I'm going to say is what you've seen so far is the least of everything—there's so much more to come."[120] Ritu Arya repeatedly praised the environment on the movie's set, Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig.[121][122] Simu Liu spoke to The Morning Show and said he enjoyed making the movie.[123] Emma Mackey spoke to Empire magazine about the cast's sleepover and her respect for Greta Gerwig.[124] At the 2023 Met Gala, Margot Robbie said she was surprised by how excited people were for the movie.[125]

Ryan Gosling's trainer for the movie was Grant Roberts.[126] In June 2022, Simu Liu praised Gosling's fitness.[127] Simu Liu said at the 2023 Met Gala that he had to wax his body to play a Ken.[128][129] He told Page Six that he had to wax his arms and legs.[130] He later spoke to the Daily Mail and said he thought the movie would be impactful.[131]

The tanning artist for the movie was Kimberley Nkosi.[132] She tanned Ryan Gosling and other cast members including Hari Nef and Emma Mackay, but not Margot Robbie.[133]

A Huffington Post article published on April 11, 2023 wrote about Simu Liu, "When a single actor appears to be getting the bulk of Asian male roles in Hollywood, it starts to feel a little less like representation and a lot more like tokenism."[134] Simu Liu responded on May 4 in a Facebook post.[135] He then responded to a Tiktok video of someone saying he could not take criticism.[136]

Model India Harl played Architect Barbie in the movie. She spoke to BBC in May 2023 about her experience filming.[137] John Cena was interviewed on the Today show and said he was cast after speaking to Margot Robbie.[138]

In May 2023, Greta Gerwig told British GQ that she cast Ryan Gosling as Ken because "there is a quality to Ryan's acting – even when he is hilarious, it's never the actor standing outside of the role commenting on or judging this person. He doesn't try and make you know that Ryan Gosling knows that this is silly. He does it in a way that takes on all of the potential humiliations of the character as his own." Ryan Gosling was interviewed and dismissed opinions that he was too old to play Ken.[139] On May 30, 2023, Issa Rae told Entertainment Tonight about the times spent off-set bonding with her castmates.[140] In June 2023, Ncuti Gatwa told RTE and Elle that he enjoyed making the movie.[141][142]

After Margot Robbie mentioned in Vogue that Gal Gadot had been considered for the role of Barbie, Gal Gadot told Entertainment Tonight, "Margot, I love you! I'll do anything with you, I'll be [in] anything with you!"[143]

On June 28, 2023, Entertainment Tonight shared an exclusive video interviewing Scott Evans about his role as one of the Kens.[144]

Production and Planned Release[]

On March 21, 2014, Sony's Doug Belgrad wanted to "make [the movie] inexpensive, discover a girl for Barbie, make it this fall and have it for next summer."[145] On March 23, 2014, Sony's Amy Pascal wrote, "everyone at Sony is so excited about the movie and we would hope to make it a priority movie for summer 2015, if that works for Mattel. I realize that masters of the universe, another of our collaborations, is taking longer than any o f us hoped. the barbie movie will not." (sic).[146]

On April 23, 2014, the film was announced with Parkes+MacDonald as the producers, and Marc Resteghnini and Julia Pistor as the executive producers. Production was planned to begin before the end of 2014.[147] In 2015, the original release date was reported to be June 2, 2017.[148] On March 4, 2016, it was announced that the release had been pushed forward to Mother's Day weekend, May 12, 2017.[149]

On December 2, 2016, it was announced that Amy Schumer was in talks to play Barbie. Production would begin in spring 2017, with a summer 2018 release.[150] The film would be released on June 29, 2018.[151] Schumer later dropped out of the film. On March 23, 2017, Variety reported that before Amy Schumer dropped out, production was expected to begin on June 23, 2017. The article said, "Sony needed to stick to its June 29, 2018 release date since Mattel already has merchandise and product cycles in motion–shifting the production to accommodate Schumer would have put on a strain on other partners on the film, according to insiders."[152]

On July 24, 2017, Deadline wrote that the film "promises to get a huge marketing push from Sony and its partner Mattel in the summer 2018."[153] On August 12, 2017, it was reported that the release date would be August 8, 2018.[154] On January 23, 2018, Variety announced that the film would be released on May 8, 2020.[155] On September 6, 2018, it was announced that Mattel was launching a theatrical film division to develop motion pictures based on their franchises, including Barbie.[156] On October 5, 2018, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Mattel was partnering with Warner Bros for the film, and Margot Robbie was in talks to play Barbie and produce the film through her co-founded production banner LuckyChap Entertainment.[157] Sony's rights to Barbie expired in 2018.[158] The New York Times reported on December 13, 2018 that Mattel was "concerned about protecting its brands" and had "worked hard to wrestle back the film rights for Barbie and its other toys, according to current and former company executives."[159]

On January 9, 2019, it was officially announced that Margot Robbie was playing Barbie. She co-produced the film under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, alongside Tom Ackerley. Robbie Brenner also produced through Mattel, along with David Heyman via Heyday Films. LuckyChap's Josey McNamara and Mattel's Ynon Kreiz were executive producers.[160] On February 10, 2022, production would begin in March, according to Kreiz.[161] The film was the first collaboration between Mattel Films and Warner Bros. Pictures.[162]

Ynon Kreiz, Chairman and CEO of Mattel said, "Barbie is one of the most iconic franchises in the world and we are excited to partner with Warner Bros. Pictures and Margot Robbie to bring her to life on the big screen. We look forward to building on this collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures as we tell the stories of our beloved brands. Mattel Films is on a path to demonstrate the enormous potential of our brand portfolio, as we continue to execute on our strategy of transforming Mattel into an IP-driven, high performing toy company." Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group said, "This project is a great start to our partnership with Ynon and Mattel Films, and Margot is the ideal producer and actress to bring Barbie to life on screen in a fresh and relevant way for today's audiences."[163]

On February 18, 2022, the Mattel Virtual Analyst Presentation took place and Robbie Brenner stated, "Barbie is in pre-production right now in London with principal photography starting next month."[164] In March, it was was reported that filming was underway at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.[165] On April 26, 2022, the first photo of Margot Robbie as Barbie was revealed at CinemaCon 2022's Warner Bros. Presentation, along with its release date on July 21, 2023.[166] The first photo of Ryan Gosling as Ken was released on June 15, 2022.[167] Greta Gerwig said she was "thrilled" by the response to photos of Ken, and said he had "many extraordinary looks" in the movie.[168]

Margot Robbie was photographed on set for the first time on June 22, 2022, wearing a bright pink Western-style costume.[169] She was photographed in the costume again on June 29, 2022, alongside Ryan Gosling, who was wearing a black Western-style costume. They were also seen wearing neon costumes with rollerskates,[170] inspired by Hot Skatin' Barbie. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon in September 2022, Margot Robbie said she mortified" and found it "humiliating" that photos of the costumes went viral.[171][172] They were seen in the neon costumes again on June 27, 2022[173][174], and Will Ferrell was also seen on set.[175] The three actors filmed scenes wearing roller-skates, along with America Ferrera.[176][177]

On June 30, 2022, Allure magazine reported on the products Kimberley Nkosi, the film's tanning artist, used on Ryan Gosling.[178] On July 1, 2022, Margot Robbie was seen filming a scene with America Ferrera.[179] On July 2, 2022, Margot Robbie celebrated her birthday on set with a Barbie birthday cake.[180] On July 13, 2022, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz called the movie a "cultural event" and said, "Barbie is very much more than a toy, and more than a doll. Barbie is a cultural icon, a pop icon. And this movie is really shaping up to be what we believe, would become a societal moment. The approach that is very different, very unique, not something that you’ve seen before, is going to be very exciting. The other piece of the process is making quality content, not just films and TV shows tied to toy lines. Don't try to sell toys. We know that in success, if people watch the movie, and there's high engagement, good things will happen. We know how to sell toys, where the opportunity is really about quality entertainment, based on our IP."[181]

The movie wrapped production on July 17, 2022.[182] Sharon Rooney told The National, "I've just finished Barbie. I've spent so long keeping it a secret that I feel like I'm not allowed to say that but I am allowed to say that! I still feel like someone's going to jump out my wardrobe and give me into trouble for saying it!" On social media, she described the movie as "the best adventure yet."[183] On July 19, 2022, Issa Rae said filming Barbie and said "It was so fun (...) Everyone was incredible."[184] Rae later said of her experience shooting the movie, "it was incredible, one of my favorite experiences."[185]

In August 2022, cinematographer Rodrigo Piet complimented Margot Robbie's acting and the movie at the Netflix conference Que México Se Vea.[186] On September 9, 2022, licensing.biz reported that Mattel Licensing was preparing for 2023, its "biggest year to date", which would include the release of Barbie.[187] After Barbie sales declined by 3% in the third quarter of 2022, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz was interviewed and said, "We look forward to next year, which will have an exciting innovation pipeline and new content slate with Netflix and, of course, the highly anticipated "Barbie" movie, our first theatrical release that will come out this summer."[188][189] Also in August 2022, Olivia Wilde mentioned that the movie had a $100 million budget.[190]

On September 12, 2022, Kate McKinnon said about the movie, "It's gonna be incredible. The colors, the sets are everything, the costumes are everything, the script and story — Margot [Robbie], Ryan Gosling — are everything. America Ferrara, everything... and I'm just so excited for people to see it,"[191][192] In October 2022, America Ferrera told People that the movie "is just awesome in the truest sense, and I'm so excited for people to share in that awesomeness. All of the craftsmanship is just awe-inspiring, and the sets themselves were magnificent and awesome, as was the wardrobe and the hair and the makeup."[193] In November 2022, Greta Gerwig repeatedly praised Margot Robbie as an actress and as a producer.[194][195] When asked if Barbie could be the beginning of a series, Gerwig told Variety, "I don't know. I mean, it would certainly be exciting if it was."[196] On December 2, 2022, it was reported that Gerwig was also editing the movie.[197]

Reshoots were done in Los Angeles in April 2023.[198]

On May 4, 2023, the Daily Mail reported that even though the movie had a $100 million budget, homeless people filmed in the background in Santa Monica were not paid, but extras were paid to dress as homeless people to "reinforce the scene."[199]

The production designer was Sarah Greenwood and the set decorator was Katie Spencer. Architectural Digest reported that they "took inspiration from Palm Springs midcentury modernism, including Richard Neutra's 1946 Kaufmann House and other icons photographed by Slim Aarons." They ordered a Barbie Dreamhouse from Amazon and studied the scale. In the movie, Barbie has a three-story Dreamhouse with a pool. Greta Gerwig said, "I wanted to capture what was so ridiculously fun about the Dreamhouses. Why walk down stairs when you can slide into your pool? Why trudge up stairs when you take an elevator that matches your dress?" She alluded to previous Dreamhouses from the 1970's and the 2000s, and her references included "Pee-wee's Big Adventure to Wayne Thiebaud's paintings of pies to Gene Kelly's tiny painter’s garret in An American in Paris." Spencer referred to Barbie as "the ultimate feminist icon" because the first Dreamhouse was sold in 1962, when it was rare for a woman to own her own home. Barbie's house is designed as a house for a single woman, and her outfits look like they are in doll packaging.[200] Greta Gerwig said, "We were literally creating the alternate universe of Barbie Land. (...) Everything needed to be tactile, because toys are, above all, things you touch. (...) Maintaining the 'kid-ness' was paramount,” Gerwig says. “I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much." She said they aimed for "authentic artificiality" and used a hand-painted backdrop instead of CGI to create the sky and San Jacinto mountains in the background of Barbie Land. Gerwig said she didn't want to "forget what made me love Barbie when I was a little girl." Construction of the set caused an international run on pink Rosco paint.[201] In a June episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Margot Robbie said she requested the slide for Barbie's Dreamhouse, and for the house to be very pink. Ryan Gosling requested underwear with Ken's name on it.[202]

On June 9, Hari Nef attended a Tribeca Film Festival luncheon and was interviewed by W magazine.[203] On June 12, an exclusive interview with costume designer Jacqueline Durran was published by British Vogue.[204]

AMC Theaters website wrote that the movie's runtime was 1 hour and 54 minutes, including end-credits and potential post-credits scenes.[205]

Margot Robbie's body double was Emma Eastwood.[206][207]

On June 27, 2023, an interview was published with Alexandra Shipp for Interview magazine. She said the cast members wore makeup on their arms, legs and chests to make them look plastic.[208]

Marketing and Promotion[]

On April 26, 2022, the first photo of Margot Robbie as Barbie was revealed at CinemaCon 2022's Warner Bros. Presentation, along with its release date on July 21, 2023. In the photo, Barbie was in her pink 1965 Chevrolet Corvette.[209] The first photo of Ryan Gosling as Ken was released on June 15, 2022.[210] At the 2022 CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, a booth was set up to promote the movie. It featured the pink 1965 Chevrolet Corvette.[211]

The teaser trailer was first seen during night screenings of Avatar: The Way of Water on December 15, 2022.[212] On December 16, 2022, the teaser trailer was released to the public.[213][214] It was narrated by Helen Mirren,[215] and paid homage to the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.[216] The trailer references the fact that Barbie was created by Ruth Handler so that girls wouldn't be limited to just playing with baby dolls. Margot Robbie depicted the first ever blonde ponytail Barbie doll in the black and white striped swimsuit.[217]

A teaser poster was released on December 16, 2022. It featured a close-up of the "B" in the Barbie logo, credited Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and also said "Summer 2023".[218][219]

On February 9, 2023, there was a test screening for the movie in New Jersey. World of Reel reported that the "overall reaction is said to be very good. The audience was really into it, clapping and cheering throughout."[220][221][222] On April 29, the Daily Mail reported, "The Mail on Sunday understands sneak screenings of the movie – which has Barbie leaving Barbie Land to discover herself in the 'real' world – have had a virtually unheard of 95 per cent approval rating and feedback has been so positive executives at Warner Bros are set to green light a sequel before the film even hits cinemas."[223]

On March 21, 2023, Variety announced that HGTV had ordered a competition series named Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge as part of cross-network summer promotion for the Barbie movie.[224]

A second teaser trailer, another poster with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken on the Barbie logo, and a set of character posters were released on April 4, 2023.[225] The trailer and posters went viral.[226] An official "Barbie Selfie Generator" used AI to let people create their own versions of the posters.[227][228] It also became a Tiktok trend for people to use a Barbie AI filter.[229] In response to the virality, Danielle Bekas, Co-Executive Vice President, International Marketing, Warner Bros. Pictures, said, "We started to see we have something, we have something that people want to talk about and engage with."[230]

Mattel and Hasbro partnered for licensing deals for Barbie and Transformers. Nick Karamanos, senior VP entertainment partnerships at Mattel, stated, "We are excited to pair some of the most popular brands together for the first time. This collaboration features world-class IP, celebrates the timeless appeal of these brands, and creates unique play opportunities for fans." Casey Collins, president of global licensed consumer products and business development, stated, "With the major theatrical releases of the Transformers and Barbie movies in summer 2023, we’re excited to bring brand-new play experiences to fans, families, and movie and toy lovers all around the world."[231]

The movie's first official press stop was at CinemaCon in April 2023. Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling were in attendance.[232] The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the movie "was one of the buzziest titles at CinemaCon. It's expected to be a big draw and has a 'want-to-check-it-out' appeal. Exhibitors and rival studios watching new footage say they better understand what the film's about, and that what they saw on the big screen looks great." Warner Bros. distribution executives Andrew Cripps and Jeff Goldstein were in attendance.[233] There were new Barbie standees and posters.[234]

Barbie partnered with Swoon for a limited-edition zero-sugar drink. Instead of sugar, Swoon x Barbie Pink Lemonade is sweetened with monk fruit.[235] 10% of net sales of Barbie x Swoon Pink Lemonade supported the Dream Gap Project.[236] There was other merchandise made for the partnership including a baby cooler, a fridge, tote bag, chapstick and stickers.[237]

Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz told Yahoo Finance Live at the 2023 Milken Institute Global Conference, "This is the first time that Mattel is putting a movie out based on any of our [intellectual property], any of our franchises. Barbie is clearly an important brand. It's one of our three power brands, and it will be in many ways a showcase for the quality of the movies that we're looking to make, the type of partnerships we're formulating with lead talent in Hollywood, working with major studios."[238]

Barbie partnered with Impala Skate for a rollerskate collection inspired by the rollerskates Barbie and Ken wear in the movie.[239]

CFO Dive reported that the movie "is expected to create renewed interest in the brand from both collectors and casual fans alike due to the positive buzz it has already received."[240] 9 Barbie Signature dolls were released for the movie. A raffle was available for Barbie Signature members to win a Barbie: The Movie 9-Doll Collector Set. Entry was closed on May 24, 2023.[241]

Margot Robbie was on the cover of Vogue magazine in May 2023.[242] The interview was published online on May 24. On May 25th, the main trailer for the movie was released.[243] Ryan Gosling was interviewed by British GQ.[244]

On June 1, 2023, 9 dolls based on the movie's characters were released. A video was released of the cast members reacting to their dolls.[245]

In June, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling announced they would be promoting the movie in Korea in July.[246] It was later reported that Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling would promote the movie in Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Sydney, Seoul, Mexico City, London and Berlin.[247]

Also in June, Issa Rae, Margot Robbie, America Ferrera, and Kate McKinnon were interviewed on The Kelly Clarkson Show.[248]

On June 13, it was announced that the movie had an official MPA PG-13 rating.[249] Also, it was speculated that the SAG strike could affect publicity plans for the movie.[250]

On June 7, 2023, Simu Liu posted a behind the scenes video of the first day of his dance rehearsals. He wrote, "Day 1 rehearsal! Whether you're doing a brutal fight scene on a bus in SF or dancing the night away in Barbieland, choreography is choreography. And long before I ever used the Ten Rings, your boy was competing in hip-hop competitions with his college dance crew. Appreciate @BarbieTheMovie for bringing me back to my roots. This one's for you, Hip Hop Western. Barbie comes out in theaters July 21st; don't miss the fire choreography by @jendots and @Lisa.welham 👯‍♀️. Thanks for unleashing our kenergy!"[251]

In June, an translation of a French poster went viral on Twitter because it had a sexual pun.[252][253] The Hollywood Reporter wrote that it "was too obvious not to be deliberate".[254]

In June, a Barbie-inspired Progressive commercial premiered on the channels Mom and Nick@Nite in the United States.[255]

On June 22, 2023 it was announced that PROPER popcorn partnered with Barbie: The Movie for a new limited-edition Sweet flavour. It was exclusively available in Tesco for a week, followed by release in Asda, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Amazon and Ocado later in the month. The popcorn featured an on-pack promotion offering a chance to win a trip for two to California.[256] Barbie also partnered with Moon for a limited-edition electric toothbrush.[257] On June 23, 2023 it was announced that Pinkberry was partnering with Barbie The Movie for a limited-edition frozen yoghurt.[258] On June 24, 2023, it was announced that NYX Professional Makeup was launching a Barbie The Movie collection.[259]

On June 23, 2023, an interview with Issa Rae was published by the Hollywood Reporter.[260]

Bloomingdales released a collection of Barbie The Movie x AQUA clothing and accessories.[261][262]

The press tour officially began in Los Angeles on June 25, 2023.[263] Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Ryan Gosling and Michael Cera were in attendance.[264]

On June 26, 2023, Airbnb announced that two people could stay in Barbie's Malibu DreamHouse for free on July 21 and July 22, 2023.[265]

On June 26, 2023, Xbox announced there would be Barbie cars in Forza Horizon 5, and there would be a Barbie-themed Xbox Series S giveaway.[266] The Forza Horizon 5 collaboration had leaked earlier in the month. The two new Barbie cars were the Barbie Movie Corvette EV and a GMC Barbie Movie Hummer EV Pickup.[267]

On Jun 26, 2023, OPI released an OPI x Barbie nail lacquer collection. The products were called "Best Day Ever", "Every Night is Girls Night", "Hi Barbie!", "My Job is Beach", "Yay Space", "Bon Voyage to Reality!", "Feel the Magic!", "Hi Ken", and "Welcome to Barbie Land."[268][269]

On June 27, 2023, Time magazine published an interview with cast members of the movie, and they were on the cover of the magazine.[270] The author published another article about the movie that day.[271]

On June 28, 2023, Cold Stone Creamery announced it would have Barbie themed ice cream ("All That Glitters is Pink") and a Barbie-themed ice cream cake ("Best Cake Ever!") in stores nationwide until August 8, 2023.[272]

On June 28, 2023, Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu went to Toronto, Canada as part of the press tour.[273][274] Ryan Gosling's sister was also in attendance and was interviewed.[275]

On June 29, 2023, Pocket Gamer wrote that there would be a collaboration between Barbie and a battle royale game named Stumble Guys.[276]

On June 30, 2023, Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, Issa Rae and America Ferrera appeared on The Project[277][278] and attended an event in Sydney, Australia for the press tour.[279][280][281] Also, Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, Issa Rae, and America Ferrera attended Vogue's Barbie Celebration Party at the Museum of Contemporary Art.[282][283]

On June 30, 2023, Snapchat launched filters that let people virtually dress up in costumes inspired by the movie.[284]

On June 30, 2023, there was a Barbie Boat Cruise in Boston.[285]

Official Release[]

AMC had "Barbie Blowout Party" Early Access Screenings on July 19, 2023,[286][287] as well as a "Barbie is Everything" Sweepstakes competition excusively for AMC Stubs members. People had to buy tickets for AMC showings from July 19-23 to enter the sweepstakes, and the prizes were a hotel, flights, and tickets for two to the World of Barbie experience in addition to a pair of roller skates, a Barbie Dreamhouse, and a collection of movie-themed dolls.[288] Tickets for pre-screenings quickly sold out.[289]

In Dallas, there were pre-screenings on July 19 (at Angelika Film Center) and July 20 (Alamo Drafthouse).[290] The Alamo Drafthouse had screenings with themes such as "Barbiecore Dress-Up" (including a costume contest), "Party Screening" and "Slumber Party Pajama Screening"[291][292][293] In the UK, Vue cinemas announced a limited-edition Tango Ice Blast (Barbie Tang Ice Blast) flavor inspired by Barbie, and said anyone who brings a a companion named Ken (verified by valid ID) with them to watch the movie would receive a free regular Tango Ice Blast or popcorn.[294]

The Numbers predicted that the movie would have a $31 million opening.[315] In May 2023, it was reported that the movie could earn $400 million at the box office.[316] The IMAX CEO was interviewed about the movies being released at the same time as Oppenheimer.[317] The film beat expecatations grossing $162 million domestically during its opening weekend, surpassing both “Captain Marvel,” which was co-directed by Anna Boden and opened to $153.4 million in 2019, and “Wonder Woman,” Patty Jenkins’ 2017 film that debuted to $103.3 million.[2] On July 24. 2023, Barbie would break the record previously held by The Dark Knight for highest grossing Monday for a Warner Bros. film. [1]During its fourth weekend, and shortly after becoming the first movie directed by a woman to reach the $1 billion global box office milestone, it would surpass Captain Marvel's domestic record as the highest grossing movie directed or co-directed by a woman.[318] On August 15, 2023, Barbie would surpass The Dark Knight as the highest grossing movie to be released by Warner Bros at the domestic box office. [319] On August 23, 2023, Barbie would surpass The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the highest grossing film at the domestic box office for the year 2023.[320] During the September 1-3 weekend. Barbie would surpass The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the highest grossing film for the year 2023 at the worldwide box office as well.[321]

Music[]

In April 2022, Ulrich Møller-Jørgensen, who manages Aqua lead singer Lene Nystrøm, told Variety that the song "Barbie Girl" would not be in the movie.[322] In September 2022, lead vocalist Lene Nystrøm told Variety, "I totally understand why they didn't use it, but it's going to bring us a lot of attention, no matter what."[323] However, "Barbie Girl" was sampled in the song "Barbie World (With Aqua)" by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, on the movie's soundtrack Barbie: The Album.

On April 4, 2023, it was reported that Dua Lipa would record the theme song of the movie.[324] Also in April, Charli XCX teased that she was on the soundtrack.[325]

Dan Smith of Bastille tweeted on May 21, 2023 that he wrote a couple of songs for the movie that were not used.[326]

On May 22, 2023, Dua Lipa confirmed she was doing a song for the movie called "Dance the Night". In a teaser posted on Instagram, she replicated the shot from the trailer where Barbie takes her heels off.[327] Mark Ronson posted on Instagram that Dua Lipa became involved with the movie after he messaged her.[328]

Barbie: The Album was announced on May 25 and will be released along with the movie on July 21, 2023. It only contains original music made for the movie. The initial album lineup announced Mark Ronson was the Executive Music Producer, and the featured artists would be Ava Max, Charli XCX, Dominic Fike, Dua Lipa, FIFTY FIFTY, GAYLA, HAIM, Ice Spice, Kali, KAROL G, Khalid, Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Pink Pantheress, Ryan Gosling, Tama Impala, and The Kid Laroi. The announcement also read, "MORE BARBIES & KENS TO BE ANNOUNCED..." The artists and titles for tracks 6 and 11 were not revealed. The album will be released on vinyl, cassette, CD and digitally.[329]

On June 10, 2023, Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice announced they were doing a track together with Aqua for the album.[330]

On June 12, an interview with PinkPantheress was published on the Elle magazine site.[331]

On June 13, an album listening party was held in Battersea, London on JOIA rooftop. Influencers, actors and music artists were in attendance, including Mark Ronson.[332][333]

On June 17, Nicki Minaj teased a music video for "Barbie World".[334] On June 18, Jason Martin accused Nicki Minaj of stealing the song from him and Saweetie.[335]

On June 26, 2023, an article by Rolling Stone wrote that Ryan Gosling's song was an 80's power ballad. The article included other behind-the-scenes information about the soundtrack album.[336]

Impact[]

Before the movie came out, it went viral on social media multiple times and people created several memes. The movie's release coinciding with Oppenheimer was the inspiration for some of the memes, though the "Barbenheimer" meme sparked controversy in Japan where netizens in the country took umbrage at what they view as an insensitive joke in light of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki whose weapons used were co-developed by J. Robert Oppenheimer (who later expressed deep regret over his creation).[337][338]

The shots of Barbie and Ken holding mugshots became a meme among artists.[339]

Images of Margot Robbie on set wearing a pink western outfit inspired the Barbiecore fashion trend.[340] Barbiecore also became a trend with home decor and interior design.[341] Time published an article on the history of Barbiecore on June 27, 2023.[342]

Before the movie came out, people speculated that Ryan Gosling's fake tan could also spark a trend.[343] There was also a trend of clear heels, dubbed "Barbie-Foot Heels".[344]

Saturday Night Live did a live action American Girl trailer as a spoof on the live action Barbie movie. At the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, Drew Barrymore played Skipper in a fake behind the scenes featurette of Barbie: The Movie.

Several pop-up shops were created before the movie came out, including Barbie x Indigo[345]

There was also increased interest in pink Chevrolet Corvettes because Barbie drives a modified C1 in the movie.[346]

The trailer shot of Barbie taking off her high heel inspired a "Barbie Foot Challenge" that podiatrists warned against.[347] Another Tiktok meme had men changing their outfits after drinking a milkshake from Cold Stone Creamery.[348]
